@iLOVEpenguins93 -being talented is only 50% of being successful, having a acceptable personality can make you or break you in any career or business.
Very good but a couple of Leontyne's versions are superior - there r a couple diff Leontyne versions posted - when she was young and one much older - she does them a little differently because of changes in voice with age - both r impressive tho.
So many ill talented diva wannabes have sung this song to death that gershwin's coffin has long since crumbled to dust from rolling over so many times. But a few, a very few have sung this well and beautifully. Of these, Maestra Battle is by far the very best. If there is a God, Gershwin has heard her sing. Thanks for posting.
her mouth positions and the pronunciation is really interesting, and I KNOW its out of sink... this is irrelevant, the pronunciation is impeccable and yet the mouth shape is not standard, she is truly incredible...
When Miss Battle opened the Boston Symphony Orchestra season, she reportedly banned an assistant conductor and other musicians from her rehearsals, changed hotels several times, and left behind what a report in The Boston Globe called 'a froth of ill will." During rehearsals for an upcoming production of La fille du régiment, Battle was said to have subjected her fellow performers to "withering criticism" and made "almost paranoid demands that they not look at her." (This is from Wikipedia)
she got fired because she acted like a bitch. she was a little bit too much of a diva, but she has one of the greatest voices I have ever heard. I hope to one day sound like her. It's funny that someone with the voice of an angel doesn't always act like an angel.
So - this was from the year she was sacked from the Met and never again sang a live opera. How incredibly sad - she is wonderful in this song and clearly had plenty of solid years left in her. I wonder what happened to turn it all so wrong...
I'm sorry to point this out but just wanted to clarify. You mean to say that she never fails or disappoints, or you really mean to say that she never fails to disappoint?
does anyone have a copy of battle singing zerbinetta from Ariadne auf Naxos? its not on youtube anymore sadly... would lvoe to see it! can someone post it?
Some people have their voice touched by the Almighty, Ms. Battle is definitely one of them. That is one beautiful gift He has bestowed on this beautiful woman.
I love her voice but it's really look funny when she open her mouth for seconds and then the voice just came up. Not that she is lipsync though but I think there's something wrong with the video

Why and how am I an idiot? Is it because I have a different opinion than your own that I based my own personal experience on? Sorry, but because I disagree does not make me an idiot. however, you making that comment towards me makes you look stupid and very rude, especiall since my comment was not disrespectful at all.

I wish I could enjoy her voice but I can't. I don't her anything very special about her, not to mention, I got to meet her and see her ridiculous attitude in person.

i understand completely! Ms. Battle's voice is astounding and her performace is perfection however, she has a foul attitude, (it got her "removed" from radio city music hall) can often dramatically alter our opinions of her. :)
I absolutely idolized this woman when she was in her prime. I was only ten when she was let go from The Met, and not knowing the circumstances, I wondered one day a few years later how she had just faded from my memory.
Then I read the article. She earned her way up, and she earned her way out. She'll always be one of my favourites, and I wish her time at The Met could have been longer, but can you do? You just can't abuse people like that, supernaturally gifted (yes), or not (oh well).
I attended this concert. I'll never forget it. When she came out on stage wearing that beautiful dress, she did a 360 degree turn so the audience could see all the embroidery on the back. She sang a lot of Bellini and Donizetti, since her Bel Canto recording had just been released. The encores were stunning. After the concert, there was a reception, and KB danced with my roommate, who was in the band. I was so jealous!
her dress is gorgeous!!! she had a different take on the ending than I've heard. the glissando was an "oo" rather than an "yy"(as in standingby)The Price and Fleming versions ae noteworthy as well!

It's a toss up between Battle's interpretation and Leontyne Price's ......... both are fabulous singers!

Her sheer, raw talent and superb training are both breath-taking. Whether you find it positive or negative, the truth is: she was a true Diva.

It is unfortunate that success can go to someone's head - however, in terms of her voice she is packed with talent - there is no doubt about that!
