The '60's and '70's was such a great era for T.V. and I'm grateful to have grown up through it. There was just so much variety and quality then, we didn't think it was special - we couldn't envision it otherwise! Looking back on it now and comparing it with today's muck is pretty startling. You really need to have lived through that time to appreciate just how low television entertainment has fallen.
I grew up during the 70s and remember watching a lot of these shows. However I do remember vividly that they would also programs from the 50s and 60s.
We didn't have a kids channel so everyone grew up on those old shows. Having kids of my own I was shocked that they had no idea what a cement pond was, never head of the Sanford n Son and had no idea about Gilligans Island. Not until I showed them.
If you have kids sit with them and watch a few shows they will appreciate it.
Welby... Marcus Welby, MD. He will... cure ye, Welby. Welby, he cures so neatly, he treats so sweetly, indeed... Well, I'll be! Welby, Marcus MD... And Steve Ki-ley... Toooooo! (Tuning us in from your own living room TV Set... Universal Studios Inc!)
Loved him in Father Knows Best and Marcus Welby. Both great shows IMO. I don't like or watch any tv shows these days. I watched and loved SO many back in those days.
@ladybluluv: I hear you, sister. Most of what passes for entertainment nowadays is dreck. I shudder to think what CBS is going to do when they remake "Hawaii Five-O" this fall. I bet it will be as bad as the remake of "Bionic Woman."
@zabadazidit Uggghh! And I can't believe they're advertising this "new" Hawaii Five-O as though it was actually a brand new series... what, they think the whole tv audience is age 14?? What are they going to do about the opening theme? That's one of the most iconic, dynamic tv themes ever created--are they planning to offer a new one? Get outta here with this!
This is what Dr's used to to do back in the day! That was how they build relationships with their patients! Now forget it. You go to have cash because Insurance just dont cover what they are suppoosed to cover!
I cannot help but point out that James Brolin didn't know squat about riding a bike properly. One never takes his foot off of the brake -- his right foot -- even when slowing to a stop. When he stopped in this short scene, he was stopping using only the hand/front brake. Not smart.
I feel priviledged to have grown up during the time this show and programs like it originally aired. Maybe one of these days, it will come out on DVD. One of the more interesting episodes is where Sally Field played a dual role of twin sisters, one of which was a burn victim. Does anyone remember that particular episode and what season it aired?
@Juliaflo AMEN!!! The show was on when the whole family could watch. Back then a show like this could entertain as well as educate. Not like the crap that's on now. That's why I prefer mainly the retro shows.
@8283doc It may interest you to know that this year marks the 50th anniversary of two medical drama chestnuts--Dr. Kildare and Ben Casey, and I want them on DVD. If you do, raise your hand.
I first got cable back in 1985 to watch this show. After one year,no longer available. Once in a great while it is re run but not often. SAD. There is alot of great TV out there, but not enough demand so it is lost. Medical Center, Room 222, Lucas Tanner, do you remember the Doris Day show???? C'mon you old fu__ __ s , someone needs to create a place for displaced 70's shows.....
I was a little girl when my mom would watch this show. I enjoy the show. it is what made me want to be doctor. the story was clean, yet exciting to me. The quality of the tape is very clear.
@sixtieskid062 I have the #2 DVD release, and I'm on Disc 3 of it. Apparently, the arrangement heard in this opening alternated with another one every two outings for the first 8 (the first two discs' worth). I just started Disc 3, and the first arrangement seems to no longer be there; the second one might be the one that we hear for the remainder of the season.

@FylthyBeest Brolin is riding a vintage Triumph. The brake is on the left side on that bike.

No way! the '69 300C is a classic! I'd rather own that 1969 w/440eng. than today's 300C reworked Mercedes.
Robert Young was a fine actor, one of the best!

Yeah, back when doctors were proud to drive american cars, not BMW's, MB, etc like today.

Okay, okay, don't get your Depends in a knot! In fact, I just may upload the intro for Doris Day this weekend.
And I agree with you 100% - a lot of great classic TV out there, but no demand. Well, let's create the demand!
