I NEVER beat the game.

The furthest I ever got was to the swimming level.

But even though it was ridiculesly hard, I just loved playing as the ninja turtles.

No, the Arcade one was a beat um up, with muliplayer. This is a single player side scroller, where the 4 turtles act as your lives.

Kindof an itty bitty technodrome there ^-^But that game actually had scary bosses! And good music.

Even the "originally human" Splinter eventually decided that he'd rather be a beast than a human, considering how they acted...

The original said Splinter is Hamato Yoshi's pet rat gone big, but Yoshi died in the original - that was too violent for the kids so that version said Hamato Yoshi became Splinter.

Wow, this game did have an ending. Hardest game EVER. I love the ending too. "Splinter can return to his human form!!" Did the programmers even read the comic books or watch the show? Pretty obvious they made the game quickly to cash in on the craze.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure fixing Splinter was never the "goal" of the turtles. But there are different Turtle stories where Splinter was just a rat that grew big, but the cartoon this was off of had him as merged rat and human.
