  • Actually, President Lincoln never once stated that it was a civil war because he would then be declaring that the Confederacy was in fact a separate nation. Instead, he called it a rebellion, with the result of the Confederates being called rebels. The Confederacy on the other hand called it The War of Northern Aggression.

  • This may have been a Union defeat, but it was the finest of the 54th Mass. infantry.

  • The guy with the bloody eye who gets stabbed in the back, is that the guy in the backround with the big hat?

  • @XenonCode038 I think it supposed to be yes ..in the movie i believe that was Captain Charlie Morse ..In reality Captain Morse did know Colonel Shaw but he did not serve under him in the 54th Mass Infantry ...He also survived the war and wrote a book about his experiences in which I believe he mentions Colonel Shaw .

  • Shaw should of stayed with his men and had a shoot out at the first wall until the defenses were low enough to charge. @ 1:37 isn't that the same officer that was at the front of the regiment just before the assault?

  • when Shaw gets killed, they are like "f--k it, lets go!"

  • Definitely my favorite part too!!! Just wish it was in better quality >.<

  • NINTENDO 64! 0:06

  • SOOOO SAD!!!!!!!!! im still a little puzzled at how the giant sentry tower caught on fire

  • @trenty267 Artillery fire... my guess.

  • cool battle

  • Yeah, heh ... Awesome stuff; try the Carolinas though I think. Anywho, it wasn't limited to one state.

  • this was one of the best movies ever.

  • great movie and great soundtrack

  • You will get a great "burn" doing 100 reps of squats. I do three warm up sets and always stretch out between each set.

Bench wise, I will warm up with 225x12 (feels like air), then 315x10, another 315x12 and then 405 for either 10 or 15 reps. (Heavy day). Light day I will put it on 225 and just go at it for 100 reps.

You have to trick your body, if you do the same thing, your body does not grow. I get looks doing 100 reps of anything. But never let your ego get the better of you.

  • @rebel2276 woah, you're 6"8? wow you're tall! sounds like you have a pretty big workout schedule.

  • I will still workout till I am 90, lol. Not as much as now or in the past though.

  • @rebel2276 hahaha work out till you're 90. thats awesome

  • Just eat good and workout here and there. But always stay with it.

  • ok i will

  • You got to love the movie Glory. I had family members in the fort and my GGGG-Grandfather served in the 6th Connecticut, Captain Benjamin Franklin Prouty. He commanded company "B". He was wounded in the shoulder in the assaults on Fort Wagner.

The 6th Connecticut lost half of their regiment. Many of the white regiments that had attacked the fort, before the 54th Massachusetts were hit very hard. A few men in the white regiments did get to the ramparts but were either killed, wounded or captured

  • oh snap. your grandfather went down in history along with everyone else who fought. may they R.I.P

  • He was just wounded in the shoulder and finally took a medical discharge in December 1863. He served in the Marines for four years, before the war started.

When the war started, he joined the 1st Connecticut Infantry Regiment. Because he had military experience, he was promoted to First Sergeant, of company A.

His regiment was in Keyes' Brigade at 1st Bull Run. Keyes' just put in the 3rd Conn and 2nd Maine. The 1st and 2nd Conn were in reserve.

  • were any other family members you know of were in the civil war also? or is it just your grandpa?

  • Around 200 Prouty's fought in the Civil War. A handful of them fought for the South. Georgia and Texas regiments. The Union Prouty's fought from all states except three. New Jersey, New Hampshire and Delaware.

The Prouty's represent over 20 Cavalry regiments, 17 Artillery batteries, well over 100 regiments of infantry.

I had the most family in the Civil War. Go on the "National Archives Soldier sailor Website" Type in "Prouty".

  • ok. may all soldiers who have passed away in every war R.I.P

  • To: Rebel2276

Let you know that Laura and Robert are safe and sound at the house. They came in earlier today.

Please keep in contact and let us know where you are?

    Tom

  • Korea, waiting for the attack if it shall come. I am fine and happy to read Laura and Robert got home.

I shall be here till this ends.

  • I am so proud of the 54th!

  • i live in massachusetts. i've never been more proud to live in the same state as them. i've been to the monument.goddamn i want to be a part of the 54th.

  • I understand why you´re so proud of them. Despite not being American, I feel deeply touched by their bravery. I love this movie since the first time I saw it. In my mind, Glory is not just a war movie, it shows the various levels of humanity, one scene can display the bravery of these men, and yet the next scene reminds us how scared and how human they were. I´ve always wondered what it feels like when you´re looking at their monument.....what did you feel?

  • i felt the sadness of war, but also the bravery of those men who fought trying to get their people free from slavery. alot of them paid the ultimate sacrifice, if it wasnt for them fighting for their people, america would still have slaves that get abused every second , but because of them, we have no more slaves, we should honor them, all those people fought for their freedom, and they fucking got their freedom!! god bless the 54th!!! where are you from by the way?

  • I´m from Chile and as I posted earlier, I love this movie. I´ve watched it hundreds of times and the story of the 54th always moves me to tears. That´s why I asked you about your feelings when you visited the monument. Once I spent a week in New York City and tried to go to Boston and see the monument for myself, but it was impossible.. And believe me, I still regret the chance I missed !!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • you should try again to come to boston! its a very emotional monument but its a beautiful and powerful one too, knowing that they were the first african-american regiment.

  • Yes, I'd be happy to. But I think I¨ll just be able to go to Boston the year after next so I have no other choice than to wait until then !! But when I be there, I won't leave the country until I've seen the monument for myself "-- that's a promise !!!!

  • boston is awesome, cuz of the 54th and also because of all the historic stuff like the boston tea party, paul reveres ride, stuff like that

  • The 54th Massachusetts was NOT the first African-American regiment. The First South Carolina (African-American) was.

    As seen in the movie.

  • mybad

  • Now the 54th Massachusetts, 55th Massachusetts and 29th Connecticut (All African-American regiments) were the only regiments to keep their State Numbers. All the rest turned into U.S.C.T regiments.

I had a family member that was in the 8th Vermont Infantry Regiment (Elijah Prouty) and he joined the 74th USCT.

  • Brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch this movie. God bless our nation, the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

  • i have their monument as my wallpaper on my phone

  • To me, that was the South's biggest mistake by not allowing free and non-free Africans to fight. Some did want to fight for their homes and land just as the white southerners did.

Per say, if I was President of the South, the first thing I would do is call on all Africans from 15-55. Fight for their freedom till the war ended, regardless if our side won or lost. Since they did serve, they would be left alone and treated like a fellow brother in arms when the war ended.

    Well just my thoughts.

  • @rebel2276 i totally agree, that was their biggest mistake.

  • Go through the U.S.C.T regiments that were raised in the South. Now imagine if the Confederacy allowed them to fight/serve in rear duties.

Several Confederate generals wanted African-American soldiers to join the ranks.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

  • Comment removed

  • @rebel2276 i hope you had a great thanksgiving too,

  • All the meals came prepackaged. Had your turkey, mash potatoes, stuffing, cranberry and some other unknown tort. I ate a little bit and stayed up, figured half of my command would eat and fall asleep and then we would get attacked. My son damn ate two meals, lol.

    Have a good day!

  • sounds like your son was really hungry. have a nice day too!

  • He is 16, almost 6'5 and weighs around 250-252. He is my oldest son and my workout partner since he was three years old.

My younger three boys also eat good. No fast food, junk food etc.

No surprise that 60% of Americans are overweight.

  • OMFG. im 16, 6"3 or 6"4 and 250. wow

  • I'm 6'8 and my wife is 6 foot (she will always say 5'11), lol.

We knew we were going to have some tall kids. I played football, basketball all through elementary school, junior high and high school. We went to the state championship 82 and 84, lost the first time, but won it the last time. I was 6'6, 240 back then, I just grew two more inches and put on about 15 pounds of muscle since.

I don't power lift as much back in high school, more of doing 100 reps of light squats/bench etc.

  • @thesasquatchbigfoot You ought to be! The second inception of the 54th was the first and only regiment that refused to ride with any regiment that fired on Native American villages that held only women and children. Remember this. You did not take Fort Wagner... You did distract them long enough to allow prescious other forts to be taken!

  • Does anyone know the name of the track that is playing during these scene?

  • 10. Charging Fort Wagner

  • WELL FUCKING MOVE THERE!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    lol

  • I do live in the south you dumb fuck

  • i was fucking kidding you fuck head

  • Random capitalization and. Punctuation. overpowering me. Are you Trying to capture the cadence of. William Shatner. in Type?

  • Maarow:

    I lol'd SO fucking hard.

  • Fantastic movie, they don't make them like that anymore.

Proving that no matter what color, white or black, "Men" can fight. Will fight for their cause.

We need more movies like this, to show the battle of the Crater and the USCT regiments.

The Confederacy was stupid not to grant their freedom for joining the Confederate armies.

  • America w/o the south meh wont be missed.

  • Contact your Governor, get millions of people to sign forms and there you go.

  • 2:32 love the shot of Cary Elwes waving his sword and giving his battle cry

  • FORGET THE CIVIL WAR! its history! OVER! you want to know the reason you lost the civil war south? your friggin' general! he didn't care about your men's lives, just the battle. he would have sacraficed you all. hitler was much the same way. and Love your country now, because i'm not a racist idiot like the southerners were. they were just too lazy to do thier own chores...

  • Coming from a person living in Dallas, Texas. Go figure lol

  • screw the south..........csa was defeated once and for all.

  • i love this part only because you see him and cabot forpes their hot shaw only in this movie thought

  • it pains me every time i watch this part.

    its just too sad.

  • same man. i

  • The war between the states was a tragedy for both sides.

  • that was sad when he died in real life its like he never had a chance to step on in the fort i dont no did robert have a wife and kid ????

  • how is this your fav part? It made me cry DX

  • powerful scene and epic music..but if anything this goes to highlight the wastefulness of war, all those people just charging into their death, so pointless and tragic, DIPLOMACY is the way to go to avoid any future wars like this.

  • That is one powerful scene.

    Many thanks madhess1

  • great movie=)

  • why are you still here. get out of my country, and my neighbors country. go to a country where you cant vote or say as you please go to a dictatorship. its people like you who don't deserve freedom. you know in some countrys its okay to kill people on the streets. besides, if you hat america, why are you clicking on this link america hater.

  • Sorry, I didn't clicked the right thumb. I wanted to click the thumb up. What you said is true. This dumbass should get kicked out of America. God Bless the USA and God Bless the Constitution!

  • Hey, can't handle anyone calling your precious country names? Tough, asswipe. You dare call this a democracy? Wake up. You're nothing more than a slave for your corporate masters. So glad the us can't push around other countries now that they are dying on the vine.

  • Hey asshole if was not for this country either the world would be under hitler or stalin and by the way those are not names you are calling this country you are disgracing it go back were you came from.

  • That's true, he's an ass. I've once read:

It is the Soldier, not the reporter who has given us freedom of press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer who gives us freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.

He should learn the meaning of the word respect, or maybe move to the DPRK.

  • Actually if it were just America against the Axis powers

Its proven that the war would have been an allied failure, every Allied nation had a part to play and to say any single nation could have won the war single handed is just downright retarded

  • god bless our nation, her allies and the men and women who have and will make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our freedoms are preserved.

  • All this arguing about how righteous or evil the US is is futile. There is history (long past and even recent) that I ashamed of and there is history that I am proud of. Whether any of you like it, admit it or embrace it, the US is (for now) the number one dominant world power and though you may not agree when, where or how we assert our will, your opinion means little more than the space your comment takes up on this page. For now we have taken our place in history, good bad or indifferent...

  • i need to know more stuff on the 1st corp black hat brigade

  • What the fuck is your problem?

  • Well if you are still here in the U.S., get the hell out!!

  • yea thats exactly wat we do psshht u stupid faggot. r u kidding me we have dealt with ten times more conflicts than any other countries and we r still here. we have kicked englands ass spains ass mexicos ass, japans ass, germanys ass and now iraqies ass. everybody asks for our help and when we give it to them all u do is say fuck u pigs. i swear b4 anybody does anything to help themselves they call america. GO FUCK URSELFS. we r the best country in the world. The young and the proud bitch

  • Oh god, shut up. It's retarded argument's like yours that only feed the Anti-US sentiment. I am proud to be American and all, but if you're going to defend our country don't just throw out "we kicked your ass" as an argument. Make us look like a bunch of retards.

  • hmmm rlly sry but i rlly dont think they care if i said we were victorious or we kicked ur ass. its basically saying the same thing in different phrasing. i apologize if i maked america looked more "retarted" on i simple comment. You could have eased up on me.

  • What the fuck is Zambia?

  • Up yer ass, yankee.

  • shutup johnny reb

  • im with ya on the johnny reb

  • go union!!!! down with the damn rebs!

  • Yer just pissed because you bluebellies never took the fort! LOL. Piss off.

  • yer just piss cuz u damn rebs lost the fucking war rofl! confederacy sucks nuts.

  • yeah, but who won the war? lol

  • i hate rebels. they have no cause. just a bunch of comunists running around killing americans. there no better than nazis

  • Yet another brilliant Youtube comment by a hater.

  • i was pissed but u dont have to be an asshole or jerk to everybody that doesnt seem to have an impressive argument. we say what we want to say its not your problem. if u want to make a better argument post it on youtube but dont get mad at us when we r at least trying

  • The deaths of Col Shaw and Tripp are among the most dramatic ever seen in a movie, in my opinion, I remember in the theatre the crowd was so into that final battle, and when the movie was over noone moved for a few minutes, many left with tears in their eyes, including me.

  • The great Civil War author Shelby Foote stated that the North fought that war with one arm tied behind it's back, they had so much more resources, a higher population, and they should have enlisted black soldiers as early as 1861, he said if they would have brought out that other arm than the war would have been over in a year.

  • no offense laggonguy, just wanted to make a point im no racist, id love to see all those battles filmed just to see them in a modern film, gettysburg was one of the most accurate and all time best civil war movies ever made, showed both points of views on both sides both north and souths reasons their different atttitudes but in thend showed they were americans especilly in the book.

  • actully i quite enjoyed gettysburg film(1993) aint a racist eithergot black relatives, and im a big westen history buff especilly on civil war and cowboy eras, i hold no resentment both fought for beliefs i just didnt like how it sounded like we got whipped easily but we didnt, and youre are aboslutely correct, we did fail in western thearte.

  • the hardest part about war movies like this is not getting attatched to the characters throughout the movie, even though when you're watching a war movie you're not suppose to get attatched to any of the characters, but unfortunately you automatically do get attatched to the characters

  • south did not get their asses handed to them actulaly it was other way aorund, we whipped the north for the majoirty of the battles and for the first three years of the war, no bunch of blacks or yankess ever topped us, it was only when we began starving and losing supplies that we faltered, and if you know a bit of civil war history we won majoirty of the battles and inflicted more casulties on he northtern side.

  • Dude, geez, show your hatred how bout it.....BTW I AM A SOUTHERNER ---

Yes the South won at Fort Wagner, they won all over the East, - Lee and Jackson kicked arse all over the east coast. But it's easy for Southerners to say "look how much we kicked your butt" and forget about how the north pretty much mowed over the Western theater. So come on, if you want to be HISTORICAL about it, the West NEVER made any solid advances, and once the Mississippi was taken over it was BAD for the South.

  • They hardly look proud.

Instead, they look beaten down, worn out and tired of the relentless fighting and holding down a fort that they would eventually abandon.

I wouldn't use pride describe the looks on those actors faces.

Learn to be proud of your country, not one that fell over a hundred years ago.

  • Aryan Chump, you are a fucking worthless disgrace to this country, just another "lost causer" who cannot understand the fact that the South got their asses handed to them by the North. Go back to your hole in the ground.

  • I'm sure you'll vomit when someone decides to film the Battle of Atlanta, or the Battle of Franklin when Confederate Units fled the field, or even Gettysburg where 7000 Southerners fell. Dude, if you weren't such an obvious rascist and more of a historian, you'd be alright... But you show your ignorance.

  • I know its so sad

  • Just watched the whole movie tonight...There has yet to be a film, that no matter how many times you see it, continuously moves to move you to tears. This film is TRULY a classic.

  • Al final de la escena es cuando vuelan los negros del 54º de Massachusetts, regimiento que perdió más de la mitad de sus efectivos en la batalla.

Como he dicho antes, muy buena película.

  • Fort Wagner was never taken, by any Union forces during the war. Them South Carolina boys know how to hold ground.

  • It wan't taken, it was abandoned when the Carolina boys got their asses whooped 6 weeks later. And it wasn't Fort Wagner, it was Battery Wagner.

  • Wikipedia has it listed as Fort Wagner.

If the fort was abandoned, when did the "Carolina boys get their asses whopped"? Your post doesn't make much sense.

  • whoever u are and whatever u life, if this aint one of ur favorite movies, u can burn in HELLL!

  • EPIC!!!!!!!!

  • Would be nice if someone posted a better quality version.

  • Wagner did not fall in fact it was abandoned ..

Today the site of Battery Wagner is submerged following years of natural erosion and flooding caused by hurricanes .

  • So Ft. Wagner stood. and the South still lost, that's all you have to say.

  • I damn all yankees black and white. Fort wagner never fell. The men of south carolina now there were some real hard soldiers. Although i can understand shaws character wanting to lead the charge to erase the horrors of antietam.

  • Still lost, get over it

  • At 1:37 minutes: AHH!!!, MY EYE!!!

  • Our generation is headed towards one of these...

  • Heh, thats kinda what I'm thinkin...How much longer is the tension gonna keep buildin in the U.S.? The division between the government and the people gets bigger everyday. Then you've got Northern Command training Mexicans and Canadians to help the military quell "civil unrest (amongst many other things)." I honestly dont konw how much more we can take. Or, maybe we'll just roll over and play dead.

  • I've feared the same. Sad because no matter what you believe, it will be the undoing of our country.

  • were did u get the clips?!?!?!?

  • go nubian go nubian ^^ egyptian use them is a great idea

  • u should fuckin thank there asses or u wouldnt be in the place and family u r now

  • Love to see you stand up for yourself.

  • Fuck you ya racist prick. Go step on a land mine.

  • well said well said

  • Very emotional scene.

  • 2:19 always gives me goosebumps. The part in the music and the expression and agony. In a filmmaker's eyes it's beautiful.

  • But still, its one of my favourite bits and i think its great

  • Why would you grab the flag and get up... wasted his life.

  • To urge the regiment onward. They were all going to die anyway- might as well die fighting.

  • One Of My Favortite Movies of all time

  • Actually I remember when Denzel grabbed the flag the audience cheered and when he was shot they gasped.

  • Definately one of the most dramatic war movie deaths ever filmed, I saw this movie in the theater and everyone gasped when Shaw was shot, there was not a dry eye leaving the theater that night, it was such a powerful final 15 minutes of film to watch.

  • This part always gives me goosebumps; I think its the music. Morgan Freeman is an asskicker!

  • 2nd best war sence in movies to me behind the battle of sterling in Braveheart.

  • How about Saving Private Ryan Omaha Beach?

  • When I read the genealogy book, I said to everyone "see I told you!!!"

I'm not crazy, those dreams are really real. To this day I don't know if that was me or if one of them is reaching out to me. I don't know. Sorry for wasting your time on this.

  • This will sound odd....call me crazy or any names you wish.

When I was in the second grade (early 70's.) I drew stick men fighting, not just fighting but with horses etc. So my teacher thought that was a bit odd and called my parents in. Draw more Shawn, they said. So TBS did a documentary on me. "Past lives." Now lets not forget that NONE of us knew we had anyone in the Civil War. Till six years ago and I am 41 now.

  • I 110% know these losses in our history books, books that you buy at book stores are way off.

The "fun" part is finding the surgeon's reports at the Library of Congress and National Archives here in DC. How many of per say 100 wounded were "slightly wounded."

This website (New York State Military Museum) is a perfect example of what I challenge.

Go to "Battles and Casualties." Take a look at that. Look at the difference of "wounded" and then "wounded recovered."

    Good morning!

  • Probably my favorite movie on the American Civil War. Does anyone know if the second in command of the 54th was Col. Shaw's brother? I had always assumed this to be the case.

  • Major Forbes

  • Thanks!

  • what a great movie it is so inspiring how each and every one of these men bravely fought on fo their causes both the 54th their reinforcements and the fort wagner defenders both were extremely brave men and anyone who thinks one of these men confederate or federal was not brave he is either lieing or deserves the worst hell ever devised

  • This was such a good freakin movie. Surprised so many people don't remember it.

  • Died fighting the white man's war, and what did it get black people, 100 more years of Jim Crow.

  • People can you negatives, but you are exactly right. It's ironic with my screen name because I had the most documented family in the Civil War and well over 200 family members fought for the Union. My GGGG-Grandfather covered the 54th's retreat (6th Connecticut) Captain in company B (Benjamin Franklin Prouty.)

Thank you for the excellent post.

  • Thats really really cool man, I have always loved learning about the civil war, since I was little when my father was a civil war reenactor as a 7th georgian Soldier some Tennessee soldier and I forget what New jersey unit he was in for the union. He stopped around 1995 though because reenacting was really sort of dying out compared to the heights it reach in the 1980's and early 1990's.

  • The Civil War we have always read and been taught is based on one-side, the Union. I challenge these historians and writers to provide just a single letter from a white Union solder, that he left his house, wife, kids, mother, father to possibly die freeing slaves.

I could see if I had just one or two family members, but the most documented family...

  • We are taught everything one sided, but in america it is hidden and worded in such ways as to make it seem as if it were not, where other countries make it obvious their one sided intent. "We are the ones people look up to." Yes, I agree that historians and writers should be challenged on these grounds, there is so much that we still don't know for sure about the civil war even though it was only 160 some years ago, it is still a hell of a long time ago.

  • I completely agree with your post. I also challenge: Losses on the battlefields, Antietam for an example "23,000" Americans were casualties. Gettysburg "50,000" Casualties. I wonder if anyone besides myself actually sat down and did a deep research on these "losses."

What many people do not realize, that no Union army commander separated his "slightly wounded" men from his reports. Lee did on May 14th, 1863 (General Order #63.)

  • Obviously not enough people have sat down and thought about it, because I knew of no such thing about lee...thats awesome research my friend.

  • Also thats fucking awesome that you had so many documented ancestors that fought in the Civil War. I have an unidentified member on my mothers side of the family that fought for the union, I have the framed picture of him in my room. On my Fathers side I am distantly related to the great General Lee to which I feel extremely honored. My Father did the research on that one.

  • None of us had a single clue we had any family in the Civil War. My grandmother on my mother's side passed away six years ago. Among her effects we found our genealogy book. "Prouty." In that book it went back to 1081AD in England. The Crusades to 1910.

It was an utter shock to be honest. All that time we never knew. That same genealogy book is at the Library of Congress in the genealogy room. "Early Pioneers" Proute-Prouty. Charles Henry Pope 1910.

  • Isn't that shit just crazy when all this time you sort of wonder who the hell your real far back ancestors are..and then all of a sudden bam you stumble upon something like that, pretty cool. I guess the civil war technically brought us together here and now ... hahah

  • i say this is the best way to die sacrificing one self for the a greater cause, whether that be race or country
