  • This is seriously amazing. Not a note off!!

  • Simon is a douche im glad hes gone.

  • coming from a musician, hes good but did nothing for the song itself. I don't like the jumps from the original key. Too over the top, the song is about a guy and the end of his rope and about to kill himself. He made it sound nothing of that nature.

  • he looks handsome in this vid

  • David not only cook, he also sings and play the guitar !!

  • Sadly, I highly doubt any of the judges listen to Collective Soul regularly. This is an amazing cover, so much emotion and power in Davids voice. Truly amazing...

  • Looking at this 3 plus yrs later it touches my heart even more.

  • Over 3 years ago... STILL

  • Simon was a jerk here. But that didn't stop DC for standing his ground. \m/

    Love you still, Cowell. ;)

  • David's performance of this song was absolutely beautiful. This was one of my favorite Idol performances ever.

  • David tried to say in the nicest terms possible "Fuck you Simon".

  • This is my favorite song and i'm proud of the way david performed it

  • This is the peak of American Idol, it hasn't been any better after this moment.

  • @jwickham65

disagree completely. adam lambert was the pinnacle but DC is gooood. Without DC there would never have been an Adam. Adam took DC's habit of rearranging songs to suit them and threw in a whole new level of performance. Adam's appearances were complete performances.

  • it's the best performance i've seen!... and not even live!

  • I like collective soul's version very much, but I like this version better. He sings it with much more emotion and the lyrics are harder to pick up in the Collective Soul version. This song needs to be acoustic or a stripped down arrangement because if it doesn't it distracts from the lyrics, which to me are the most important part of this song.

  • @bluexterra I have to agree. I grew up with the original version. This one by far has much more emotion and feeling to it.

  • One night, my mom and I went on a spree and watched a bunch of David's Idol songs!! She said that the shoulder shrudge he does at 3:58 was a F*** you, but he wasn't going to say that on live TV. Such talent with good morals!

  • I knew he was gonna win when he chose this song!

  • Butchered? Murdered this song? Really people?! David just put his own spin on it, like he always did on Idol...I like the original song too, but this performance gave me goosebumps...you go David! :o)

  • Naw! I still like the original better!

  • dont get me wrong he can sing, but he absolutely murdered this one of a kind sound that collective soul has created.

  • I have heard the original and he only made it better. Cook has a better voice and WAY more feeling when singing this song.

  • i like song light on

  • 2:16 I'd be pissed if Randy started calling me a yo-yo out of nowhere.

  • Screw you Simon....if you type in the word "progression" on the Idol performances .... this is the video that will appear.

  • This version has a lot of meaning to me. He has blessed us with his awesome voice.

  • !! like it!! good thing about is that hot even crying!!!

  • Way to just utterly ruin a masterpiece.

  • American Idol just simply does not get any better than this. David Cook broke the show.

  • Does it upset anyone else that someone like Scotty McCreery can now win this show? Scotty doesn't have half the depth, range, originality, versatility, or sincerity of David. How is it that people were unsure if David would win, but knew that Scotty would?

  • omg i love him so much!

  • @xjboy Lol he didn't butcher it. It's his style.

  • lol 0:31 some awesome random dude feelin tha vibe

  • so frickin hottttt. i miss him so much!

  • I wish all the song David Cook sang in AI SEASON 7 will be compiled made into an album... since from the audition...hollywood week... top5 to top2 damn~!!!! i wish there would be!!!! SOMEONE PRODUCED DC AI 7 album.. wahhahaaa

  • @fullclip16117 go.to.hell.

    you are a fucking idiot

  • @fullclip16117 You are just so used to Collective Soul's. Aren't you?

  • i loved this song even before he performed it, he just quadrupled my liking of this song, realy!

  • this was a great rendition by david cook! amazing performance!

  • I will never get tired of hearing him sing this song. As usual Randy is a jerk (he took back his semi complement) and Simon missed it completely. I love that Paula stood in her truth and gave him the standing O. Probably why she was let go. She didn't tout the company line. If it weren't for Haley this year, I would have stopped watching after Pia left. If Randy and JLo return next year I won't be watching. I can't believe how prostitute themselves for the producers.

  • Is there a full studio version?

  • @ThePacemaker45 Yeah, the original lol

  • Happiest moment of my tenure as an idol viewer was when he won..

  • i dont know wat to say...a jus miss david cook...i love this song...i love david cook...what more can i say? i jus hope he'll make full versions of his idol songs...sigh

  • this man.

  • This performance topped EW's Idol 30 All-Time Best Performances list! Big check on that! T'was indeed a very sincere perf!

  • He has more character in his pinky finger that most people have in their whole body. He is truly an amazing individual, inside and out. He is the total package, whether an American Idol or not. I love this man!

  • Watch David's chest start heaving at about 3:47. You know he wanted to jump off that stage and punch Simon's lights out. But as always, he remained the ultimate gentleman. I love how David waited until the audience was completely quiet to make his last statement, with just enough attiitude to get his point across to Simon.

  • That patronizing, condescending, ignorant asshole Jackson, telling David that's the kinds of song "you could get by with". And Simon, stfu, you'll be eating your words the next night. Three years later, and I still get pissed off everytime I watch this vid.

  • 3 years ago today...May 21, 2008... David Cook nails it!!

  • butcher

  • I can't believe Simon knocked David's choice of this song!!

  • @EstherIng He's just being a dick in my opinion. Like okay he is credible, but he is not open minded to much genres except for ballads. Like you will notice that he pretty much hates all rock performances or hip hop and stuff like that. He will never as well accept rapping or beat boxing (Blake) as another style cuz he's so closed up and just is not as open minded as others, for example, Randy.

  • Yay! David is awesome but I think he over do it but still nice. I still love the collective soul version though.

  • I still want to slap Randy when starts out with "yoyo". bleah. very nice my ass. it was f-ing brilliant.

  • i heard this song on Scrubs and i yelled " THATS DAVID COOKS SONG!!!" it was a great moment.

  • Nothin but love for my favorite Idol, David Cook! That last note still kills me!

  • ladymadonna512....Amen to your synopsis. Dead on. I would also add that there are maybe 10 songs that I actually go back and watch from Idol...but this is one of them.

  • ladymadonna512....Amen to your synopsis. Dead on.

  • This cant begin even compare to the ORIGINAL done by collective soul. This is a pile of absolute shit in comparison.

Rock on Collective Soul!,love you guys!!!!!

  • @VorghastZZ shut up he sang this for his brother who had cancer you do know that right? and it was a great verison of the show

  • @VorghastZZ Even Ed Roland said how much better DC sang this song than him. Frankly, I like both versions. But David's has more emotion.

  • @VorghastZZ You're wrong. This is a great version. Probably the best after Collective Soul's original. David Cook sings it awesome. I can feel the emotion in it and not a lot of people can bring that to a song.

  • when he sung this, i knew he would won,,and glad he did. ;)

  • american idol sucks

  • I absolutely loved this performance-It's one of that goes into every playlist/cd whatever...breathtaking. I love the way he sings BLOWS in the begining and KNOW ant the end.

  • Ed Roland sings it better, but this was still good.

  • awww he's so sweet. idk why but whenever i see him cry it kind of makes me sad but he just seems so sweet. awww

  • This was David's best song. I never heard of it before & looked it up. He sounds way better than the original & puts so much emotion into it. Now I love the song! He's my favorite idol. Since him, they've been going downhill (except for Adam Lambert). Miss those Idol days!!!

  • this cover was great he shoulda gotten a standing O from this from the judges

  • im gonna call and vote for him

  • I think it's funny that Simon wanted him to do what Archuleta did and sing something that he did on the show previously. Not saying that there's anything wrong with that, but, umm.... who won again? Oh, that's right... ♥ still the most epic finale on the Idol stage.

  • Great job. Glad Simon is gone. Steven Tyler would have love it.

  • @coolmamac only thing is, steven tyler loves everything... which is not always good :P

  • i heard this song on a scrubs episode and i screamed "THATS DAVID COOKS SONG!"

  • *dials the number*

  • David Owns it....like a rupture to everyones veins

  • Uh, my favorite Idol winner!!! I love him!

  • I wass just to say "David cook seriously need to release a new album"

Then i saw this... On March 31, 2011, Cook tweeted that the title of his new single will be The Last Goodbye and is scheduled to debut on April 19, 2011 ~~

    I'm excited. :)

  • love, love, love

  • 14 people are stupid because they are Archuletta fans.

  • I wasn't a huge fan of this song...UNTIL David sang it. That's what David can do to a song. :)

  • I'm tearing up because he's so amazing. I almost forgot how I loved him, supported him, bragged about him and sang with his songs. OMG~ ~~ Nostalgic! It's been almost three yrs.

  • 14 people don't know anything about the world he knows.

  • best idol winner ever, love him to pieces!

  • american idol hasn't been the same after david cook. he was the ultimate american idol. miss him!

  • @sandiemccarty i agreeee. wanna be best friends?

  • i cried when he started tearing up. always a David Cook fan!!

  • The most amazing performance which enraptured the audience and proved the glory note hunting Simon Cowell was entirely wrong. David is still my first choice out of all the idols in all 10 seasons.

  • wow chills keep going up and down my spine

  • love his music, he's awesome

  • Cook's problem is that's he's stuck in limbo. The rock community won't accept him as long as he's associated with Idol, putting out overproduced, mainstream pop/rock alternative crap and the pop community can't accept him because he's basically a very talented bar rocker. Basically the only good Idol did for this guy was give him one hit album and gave him a decent look.

  • Still in awe of him. ;'-)

  • i love how he sings this song! he sang this song at one of his concerts in went to. love you david!

  • anyone know where i can find mp3 version of this?

  • This a damn powerful rendition of this song. David's passion in singing it is a sign of a true artist.

  • still the most awesome performance night season ender=)

  • A criminally underrated performance. I think it was not only Cook's best (in a season that included all-time Idol showstoppers like Hello, Billie Jean, and Always Be My Baby), but truly one of the greatest in Idol history. It was the first time a contestant really used the finale to show who they are as an artist. A beautiful song beautifully sung, it encapsulated all the emotions of an unknown standing on the brink of stardom. The perfect way to cap a game-changing Idol run.

  • @ladymadonna512 Totally agree it was underrated - out of all his performances, and I loved so many of them, this is my favorite from his Idol run. It's understated, full of emotion, and just beautiful. It felt RIGHT for his last performance.

  • @ladymadonna512 Thanks for putting into words exactly how I've felt about this song since the day David sang it!

  • david gets me everytime. *thud*

  • Gives me chills every time

  • David Cook is my favorite Idol winner by far. He has a beautiful voice and sang this song to perfection showing so much feeling. Yes, Simon did retract what he said the next night, saying it sounded different when he got home and watched on on tv.

  • I love this performance. Just beautiful! I replay this one over and over.

  • For once, Paula was articulate and said exactly what I was thinking!

  • Wow this is stunningly gorgeous. Powerful without the general Idol bombast.

  • Every time I watch this performance I tear up. David puts so much passion into this song. A sign of a true musician when you are moved to tears with just a guitar and an awesome voice!

  • I remember this moment. Its a performance that moved me (and still moves me) in a way I won't ever be able to explain. For me, he had absolutely already won the whole competition when he sang this. One of those times when Simon was insane. Love David, got to see him in concert last year, amazing guy!

  • David owns this song now. So amazing.

  • God, this gets me every time. He will always be my American Idol. <3

  • Great! Simon retracted later saying he watched it on tv and thought it was great.

  • Gorgeous. His version of this song still brings tears to my eyes. Simon, you were wrong, Wrong, WRONG!

  • I think if they did an Idol elimination with every winner from every season and did an "Ultimate Idol"... I would bet hands down that David Cook would win... Straight up

  • When I saw DC on the AI final I just thought to myself....this guy is a very polished musician and peformer; in my opinion DA was a very good singer but DC was just better as an overall performing artist.

  • My favorite performance of his on Idol!

    beautiful,powerful,emotional,honest...

i love his reaction to Simon's comment! he's amazing (:

  • AMAZEBALLS....thats all i can really say =)

  • According to an interview a few days ago album may drop March...Mayish I can't wait either Such a talented man he is !!!!!

  • when is he releasing his 2nd album? I already miss him. :'(

  • when is he releasing his 2nd album?

  • I like the little wink Simon gave him at 4:20 lol.

  • it's 2011 and I'm here again, watching this amazing performance for the nth time!

what have you done to me, David Cook???? I"m a lifer!

  • Comment removed

  • A true artist opens his heart and soul to the world. IMO David was doing that here during this performance.

  • I am so glad he chose this song, instead of re-doing one he'd already performed. His interpretation of it is so so beautiful and I love the fact that he has continued to perform it on occasion.

I'd like to add that Ed Rolland, the man who wrote The World I Know, has gone on record to voice his approval of David's version, and of David as a musician and songwriter. =)

  • he's the best

  • I will never get tired of watching or listening to this amazing moment of integrity. A perfect performance of the perfect song at the perfect moment -- despite the pressures to do something safer and more expected. Bravo, Mr. Cook, bravo!

  • I've only ever voted for one American Idol: David Cook.

And I intend to keep it that way. =]

  • Put all the American Idol winners and runners up in one competitions and THIS guys will surely win.

  • paula is sooo wierd. haha awesome song. wow.

  • I like the way he made this song his own. His creativity and genuine passion put a refreshing spin on Collective Soul's original song.

  • He fancied it out too much, I'd prefer Collective Soul's x1000000

  • Had to come back to watch again, a real artist. The last falsetto? Gets to me every time.

  • I love it!!!

  • he's my one and only american idol. he's brilliant and has a good heart and always excel in everything he does.

  • love this song. david cook did it justice.

  • Is it just me, or does it seem like everyone SERIOUSLY sucked after him?

  • @FreakToBe I was worried about season eight, then there was Adam. Now everyone after HIM has sucked.

  • @DeathxBat21 Adam was pretty awesome.

Too bad he didn't win. Either way, he's more successful than Kris Cardboard.

Season 9 just made me want to crawl under a rock.

  • @FreakToBe I agree. No one has even come close to his level. He's just amazing!

  • @FreakToBe all except for this one guy named Adam Lambert ;p

  • @maxymillion23 ya, but he didn't win and he should have.

  • @FreakToBe nope it's not just you, he was the last time America got it right. Or maybe we are just comparing everyone to him and they just aren't living up to it? lol..

  • @FreakToBe its not u, david cook will always be the greatest idol contestant ever :)

  • @FreakToBe nah, him and Lambert are my fave (;

  • @bigbangboysrlov Yay! Sometimes I feel like my friend and I are the only ones who love them both. lol. Can't wait for their sophomore albums <3

  • @FreakToBe Haha. This has been one of my favorites seasons. And I was super happy that David Cook won. But this season with Scotty McCreery has also been good. I love Scotty McCreery and David Cook and Tim Urban. Those are my favorites. And I also liked Lakisha Jones. She was really good.

  • this is a great and original effort to a great song by collective soul and you David Cook are brilliant

  • thing is, the original is a masterpiece and truly unique to Collective Soul. I absolutely love it. Somehow, Cook's version is probably just as good. Incredible really.

  • I love David's version of this song. It was so beautiful and so much passion and feeling. A truly remarkable performance. Oh come on let's face it, he had tons of great performances. He is the last American Idol as far as I'm concerned. He is the nicest sincerest person around. He's fantastic.

  • I still get goosebumps when I hear this song. Its so beautiful.

  • One of David Cook's best performance

  • Ill be behind that drum kit one day

  • epic , you can rarely find a performance you can listen to after almost 3 years.

    He's AWESOME.

  • my god.. such an unbelievable song.. hes so gorgeous... can't get enough of him.. i always listen to this song everytime I used computer

  • i don't usually go for the "rocker" type...except when it comes to DC.

  • My favourite idol or xfactor performance of all time. Simply outstanding. I wish he would record it on his next album. Superb.

  • It makes me happy that somebody on this show finally did some awesome rock tunes! Though, it's not nearly as good as the original....

  • I love the sound, it calms me down :)

  • DEMAIS, MELHOR QUE NA VERSÃO ORIGINAL!

    ME EMOCIONO SEMPRE!

    MUITO BOOM

  • David Cook "owns" the AI Crown and every cover he does!

  • Jeez. Even though i rest from supporting this guy. He never really fails to AMAZE me. As in amaze me heaps. :))) He will always be one of the idols of my life. No matter how many fandoms i join. Love you Cook :3

  • why simon cowell said that men...

  • David Cook voice is just so amazing.....

  • David has been one of the few Idol contestants to do songs that are different. The Who, Switchfoot, Collective Soul, and Our Lady of Peace are groups that were never covered on Idol before, and it was refreshing to hear some new selections from a usually boring and overdone song list that Idol seems to be stuck on the last couple of years. David was an original...we may never see the contestant of this caliber again.

  • @metatronsfury I would really like that most of todays singers were half as good as this "medicore" singer you said! I think David is one of the greatest!

  • @CsBalazs1987 He is pretty good, but he (at this point) is FAR from one of the greatest. Have you even heard the original version of this song? He screwed it up. He put in notes that weren't supposed to be there. He elongated some words that just made it worse. David is one of the best AMERICAN IDOL CONTESTANTS, but definitely not one of the best out there in general. Of course, that is my opinion and I don't hate anyone for having theirs. I just think he could have done this song better.

  • @metatronsfury I see where you're coming from, but you also have to understand where DC is coming from as an artist. If you followed his progression on American Idol, then you know that he doesn't do copy-cats. He COULD have sung it exactly the way it was originally recorded. The point was to make it his own. He did that very thing all throughout the competition, taking a song and twisting it just enough, to make it his unique spin.
