@leon57ify Do grow up. I'm 22, and find Orthodoxy much richer than the Protestant traditions, in which I grew up. Try actually going to an Orthodox service in English and listen to everything carefullly. It is solid and timeless.
Absolutely beautiful! Sacred and holy! I, too, belong to the Western Church and I pray every day that the Eastern Churches and the Western Churches may end their schism and become reunited "That All May Be One". We can learn so much from each other.
America is not an Orthodox country. Although we have many Orthodox Christians
many are not Russian or even Slavic. The few that are of Slavic decent are not musicians. Many do not even sing! So how are we able to produce composers
conductors and singers that have the quality as you hear on these recordings?
why not just see and hear this music as what it is. The heart and mind of Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff, and his countrymen, the Russians. Have we such American "composers?" if not. why?
Christianity is an Eastern religion. It's most beautiful expression is in the East: Beauty and Theology together in every liturgical function. Gospodi pomiluj!
I have learned this piece of music at the state funeral of HRH Prince Claus of the Netherlands (the consort of HM Queen Beatrix). The Choir of the Residence Orchestra sung it a capella and it was simply haunting. Millions and millions of Dutchmen watched and heard this fantastic piece.
@basheer28 Oh there are a lots of Christian Palestinians and other Arab Christians in the Middle East. Consider the Maronite Catholics in Lebanon for example. Unfortunately, the Christians, and the effect the Israeli-Arab conflict has had on them, is often overlooked.
@basheer28 my boss was Palestinian Christian and he was the best Middle Eastern man I ever know of, and the nicest too. I wish all of middle eastern were christian
Divine, divine, divine. Orthodox Liturgy is extraordinary.
I belong to the Western-Church but may God, I beg Him everyday, bless us with Love and Forgivenessto each other in order to avoid the shameful celebration of 1000 years of separation (1054-2054). What a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!
@C2209w Amen. As a Western Christian, I proclaim that we need the wonderful, firm, beautiful and Apostolic Tradition of the East to come alongside our Western Tradition for the salvation of the world and the theosis of us all!
@DelendaEstCarthago1 The Eastern tradition is already alongside the West. There is a Byzantine Catholic rite which has been in full communion with Rome for centuries.
@mindspring57 Yes of course and I rejoice for this. But there is still much division between the East and the West, which if it could be healed entirely would strengthen us all. God bless you.
Doctrinally speaking, Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox probably are in 99% agreement with each other, and we could easily work out the remaining 1% and become part of the universal church together, but unfortunately, money and pride always interfere on both sides.
As for Roman Catholics and Eastern Catholics, we are united in the essentials of faith, and free to celebrate our diversity (e.g. we ordain married men to the priesthood).
Centerd tones. Blended vocal tones.Listening to each other. This is what makes a choir sound full. Dynamics are also better controlled. Nothing is forced.
Absolutely divine. There are no other possible words to describe Sergeï Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St.Jean Chrysostome. A soulf-lifting musical ultimate masterpiece that transcends everything, whatever our beliefs are. :D

Is this part of the Rachmaninoff Liturgy? I recently got a cd of it and the first sounded nothing like this.
