This movie gets unfair treatment. It's not the original (80s) obviously, but I'll watch this over Contagion anyday (what a fucking disappointment Contagion was).
Okay, to all the mutherfuckers that keep saying that this "Thing" acts nothing like the original.
do you ever think that the monster was inexperienced, and thought it didn't need to be subtle. And that when it found out the humans were dangerous, it decided to adjust its strategy a bit. And shut the fuck up about the CG effects, if they had them in the 80's, don't you think they would have used them too.
@56postoffice Without saying that the movie isn't awesome, because I haven't seen it yet, I have to say that this argument really doesn't say anything at all. Of course they would've used it if they would have had access to it, I'm not denying that. They would've used it cause it's easier to do and less risky. This doesn't solve the debate which one looks better though. Just because something is newer, doesn't make it better.^^ I'll check this movie out and see for myself how it is
@kozakX316 no the effects in the 1982 version actually look better to me.in ten years people will think that the 2011 version's effects look awful but in 50 john carpenter's the thing will still be scary
@lumpyfishful probably true, but im just trying to get people to shut up about all the CG. And even thought Carpenters version does look a lot more gruesome, I still enjoy the new one. Plus, I showed how the horror all started.
Oh dear! this scene!!! can't believe they used it in the final film! shitty CGI effects??? why??? they could have used a model of a head? like the Norris monster! something that looks real! it looks like computer game
You see, this is the scene that shows how much worse this is than the 1980s version. The original Thing used subtlety and paranoia. This thing just opens its chest-mouth and is a "OOOGAA BOOOGAA" monster... this ruined my horror-childhood.
@3582Xionlover The real him of the man was long gone. A direct assault from the Thing will kill you. But you remain you in an contamination scenario until a certien point.
@WilliamGarland Maybe, but maybe not. Its utimate goal was to leave in its space ship wasn't it? I may be wrong though, as it could just have just as easily been to infect the entire planet.
oh for the love of.. In the original the damn thing only showed itself when A, it thought it could get Everyone at once (the chest scene/dog scene) B when it was totaly given away (The blood scene)
Plus it was intelligent! it built a fucking saucer out of parts found in the camp store room for god's sake! it would have let the thing land, then attacked, that way even if it was discovered the chopper would be there for it to use! not explode because someone was waving to the pilot!
@cthulhlu i understand. but think about it. it thaws after 100 000 yrs sleep. wakes up cranky and in free-for-all mode. it learns a lot from the humans in norwegian camp that is why in Carpenter it is bad ass to kill.
@Blackhoundrise ive read the original story, after the Thing defrosts it immediate starts stalking the humans like it dose the Carpenters story, its a very intelligent creature.
@TEHGROUND yes he would, the Thing copys you to the degree that it knows what you know, when it was in a human it destroyed the vehicle's and comm's equipment so that they couldnt escape in the storm or call for aid.
@TEHGROUND plus the thing was able to build a anti-gravity jump pack (in the book)/ flying saucer (film) out of stuff it found lying about the store houses. the Thing made Stephen hawking look like a inbred retard
@amazo88 there is a threat. kate flagged down the chopper before it could fly off because she knew someone on board was infected, and the thing realized this.
I don't hate this version of the film, its just the Writers messed up the plot. It left some unanswered questions, like what happen to Kate in the end? Is she infected? How does the Thing break out of the frozen ICE after being trap for over a 1000 years?
The Original Thing explains how the Dog escaped from the Norwegian base, and how it mutates and spread the infection.
Original Thing was good and the Remake not bad but good but i like Original is always better then the remake the remake was good i haven't seen it yet but i am going to see it and rent it when the thing come's out but i like Originals and Remakes are great but sometimes remakes are pretty much worse? i hate the remake with Jackie Chan The Karate Kid (2010)
Agreed. Although technology has improved a lot, puppets and animal electronics still looks more realistic than CG effects. That's what made the original Thing scary, it had decent acting mixed with the electronic puppets gave it some life.
The CG Effect in the 2011 Things looks too animated and it lost the sense of realism.
i know a lot of you will call me an idiot and whatever , but i hate the carpenters version , it is a classic but i really dont like it , i liked this one instead , but its my personal opinion
@rippedlampshade well because i find the 82' version too slow and the actors didnt make a good job (my opinion) and well in this one there are some scenes that remind me the 82' and its like having both in one but i remark its just my opinion
@Cytron1515 When he was alone in the Helicopter to look for some drink the Iceblock Thing probably assimilated him (Offscreen). The moment when Edvard got assimilated was more a mystery.
@BadSilence1 Yeah, but that's the thing (No pun intended.) it was offscreen. They didn't show it. It would've been a little better if the filmmakers had shown Griggs being assimulated. Then we'd know what it looks like when the Thing takes you over. We have yet to see that.
@shetalks777official as a token to your comment, i shouted "SPAGHETTIIIIIIIIIII!" when the strands flew out of his chest on my second watch of this movie. lol forever
just friggin wished they didnt show the parts of the scenes that have the things coming out in the trailers, cuz it gave away pretty everyone who was a thing. griggs, Juliette, edvard, and possibly even sander were all shown in the trailers.
@Alcairo02 Heh, were I to direct something like this I so would've done it that way. Some of the actors wouldn't even know they were going to be creatures until they no longer had lines in the script lol.
Love how they paid homage to the original by having the split stomach.. mouth thing... open up and wreck everything... don't know why The Thing would do that when it was already well hidden and on a chopper heading to where it wants to go... but crazy scene. 0.O
