  • Gun-engine invented by a Polish Canadian Kazimierz Stan Holubowicz is more efficient.

  • copied the chrysler turbine from 1963

  • Where can I buy an engine like this!

  • which kind of gas?

  • @subzero92MK

Any fuel in either liquid or gas form can be used to power a turbine, you only need to change the air/fuel mixture percentages to make it work.

  • @rock3tcat ahh i didn't know that

  • @subzero92MK

Diesel was used primarily but any flammable liquid the fuel pump could handle would work.

  • @yuandrew i think that is one of the first diesel engine, isn't it?

  • Looks more like a late 90s early 00s car! Thats amazing! Why the heck didnt car makers sell these ffs?

  • toyota?? seriously?? 25 years ago?? man if they would have capitalized more on this and the styling cues of that car back in the 80s, they might actually have decent looking cars and trucks today! no offense to toyota lovers but they're vehicles are very bland. i would buy this though lol.

  • 138 hp

    333 nm torque @ 1000RPM

    o.0

  • @animation303 Turboshaft engines has been spooled to regular working speed. Then connects to clutch system to connect to recuction gears. So in every rpms, turboshaft engines the same torque and power , Like electric engines.

  • wow pretty good sound isolation! good job toyota.

  • Can anyone who knows the language provide a translation of the performance specs? It would be very interesting to hear acceleration/fuel usage numbers!

  • The engine sounds more like the SPM of K.I.T.T. No wonder it runs so fast!

  • so where can I find one of those engines...Seriously.

  • And they didn't put that car on Gran Turismo 1,2,3,4 X_X

I hope they will put on Gran Turismo 5 to be able to feel what it's like to drive a car with a gas turbine engine ^^

  • @waco5257 Ask them to add it to the game. Should do the trick :)

  • Great piece of kit.

Surprised big rigs down utilise Gas turbine engines, especially for the long cross country cruise part of the journey where the efficiency would be awesome!!

  • Why do i think of the knightrider theme when i see this car O_o

  • Because 1984 K.I.T.T. was a Turbine -Electric Hybrid

  • the only thing im not sure about is that turbines arent good for starting and stoping regularly. idk. is it driven by turbo shaft or does it run a generator?

  • This particular vehicle was driven by the turbine through a CVT transmission.

The earlier Toyota Century Gas turbine and the Toyota Sports 800GT built in the mid 70's used a series hybrid drive train.

  • hey thanx man! very intelligent car design

  • Chrysler actually played with this concept in the 50's and 60's. They had two production models set up in the early 70's but were ordered by the gov. to scrap the project when they were bailied out. Just like the gov. to squash a good thing to help the oil companies

  • That's ironic because turbines burn gas 10x faster than ICEs. It would have been a windfall for the oil companies if turbine cars had become popular.

  • well we found another brainiac here.. Who's up for giving this guy a PHD as a gift for his supreme demonstration of intelligence?

  • lol what does it say about people who think that actually making sense is just an inconvenience?

  • if these became commercial in the 80's itd be every day life now.....more sophisticated and family friendly..man thats awsome

  • fantastic idea

  • Think Acura got their idea off this?

  • Reminds me of Acura integra

  • the front looks totally like an integra. lol

    sounds AMAZING

  • this sound so high so crazy like it

  • LOL! If you like it's high sound, you have to like the high amounted bills for it's fuel too.

    ;-))

  • Amazingly quiet you can even hear the tires over the turbine to bad it never caught on.

  • Chrysler had one like it almost half a century ago, and while it sounds like a great idea, its hard to get people to want it, and to refine it is a living pain in the ass

  • Not only chrysler but in the 60s Rover (British Company) also had a few Turbine prototypes . The Jet 1, T3, T4 to name a few.

It never caught on because its fuel economy wasn't a good sale pitch for the 1960s.

Now imagine trying to sell one thats fuel economy not good for 60s to a 1980s crowd or a millennium era crowd.

  • Anglicain, I agree, the efficiency of a stand-alone gas turbine is very poor. However, if it's combined with a steam turbine on the same shaft that use to high termal power of the extremly hot turbine exhaust gases, you got a fuel efficiency that could even beat a diesel engine. As such combination engine needs a constant RPM, it's best use were a hybrid car.

    ;-))

  • sacha4you - Bingo. I have long thought about this. Use Capstone C60 kW microturbine w/out reduction gearing to run a high speed compressor (consumes 1 gallon diesel/hour)

The compressed air is used to drive a compressed air motor which provides motive power for the car (only need 20-25 whp to maintain 62 mph for a car with decent aero). Any excess compressed air goes into compressed air storage for bursts of acceleration.

THEN use low quality heat for steam scavenging for an extra 15%.

  • IlSeFousDeTaGuele - So the car's "native" fuel mileage at 60 mph is 60 mpg. Bonus: You can charge the car with compressed air overnight good for 60 miles on compressed air alone (good for the average commute) & the turbine would add high efficiency long range cruising on biodiesel no less.

Unlike batteries which lose their ability to charge and discharge with time, compressed air tanks do not do so. Also safer in an accident, no source of high voltage.

  • yup... I found why Volvo's Ecc isn't a mass production car... They say it is because of the costs!!!! Can You believe this??! What higher cost exists than our own planet?...They only care about their profits...Find a way to make this cars cheaper!!!...Indeed gas turbine engines can run on anything... most of the times even without modifications...You are right Elwin... a true clean engine...

  • Actually the turbine requires clean fuel ( not necessarily environmentally but clean quality) especially since the fuel will be highly pressurized while it enters the fuel manifold, also you want clean fuel as to allow for smooth atomization and reduce carbon / soot build up. Bio Diesel would not make a good choice unless you like replacing filters everyday.

  • I agree.. especially for biodiesel a purification process is required.. but I was not thinking only at biodiesel...I had in mind the idea of methane, LPG, hydrogen, alcohols, etc. anyway for commercial use, all alternative fuels will have to be "cleaned"[refined fuels]...here including biodiesel.

  • also VNG

  • they also bear no smog or carbon monoxide a truly clean engine

  • As I know, the gas turbine engines can run on hydrogen...now that is cool... because of this, the possibilities are unlimited...

  • they can run on ANYTHING with alchohol in it or peanut oil for example

  • pour blood in it.

  • An "in-the-wheel" electric transmission sounds appealing but how does it work in real working conditions... I'm thinking about mud or snow or whatever...And there is a concept car which uses a hybrid power system with turbine engine-generator-electric motor called ECC... Volvo's Environmentally Concept Car... a pretty cool looking piece of machinery... I want one :D... I don't understand why it isn't a mass production car.. :(

  • Awesome!... This is the future...or maybe a hybrid turbine-electric engine...:P

  • the GTV looks like a Modified Supra with gasoline turbine engine... the CVT was another good choice.... this will never make it to market because it is a TRULY FLEX FUEL vehicle that can run on anything from Diesel fuel to Kerosine and 100% alcohol

  • The lines are way to round, it looks like a mix between the ES and the SC of the early 90s. i wish the inside of my supra looked like that.

  • WOW. Looks way ahead of it's time!

  • Great video, wonderful piece of history shared...Thank you;)

  • much cooler than todays randomly designed Toyotas...

  • if the roads were filled with gas turbines it would be FANTASTIC!

  • Cool video, they shoulda used a real turbine engine when making Knight Rider :) too bad this isn't in english.

  • That was JUST what I was thinking. If I ever biuld a replica of KITT I want to use a real turbine engine in the firebird;)

  • Turbines dont like to be started and stopped alot. You will destroy the engine. Also the motor would probably be at least 20,000 to rebuild

  • Hello ho229---- Was this car destroyed after testing was complete? Do you know if it still exists somewhere?

    Thanks

  • Hi,docbooks.

I asked toyota information center and toyota museum about your question. They couldn't answer our question. I don't know whether it still exists or not, sorry.

  • I just dont know why all car manufacturers destroy their concept cars, EV1 Chrysler Turbine car, probably this one too, it sucks

    all best kurt

  • so is it a gas turbine that propels an alternator wich makes electricity? is it an electric car?

  • This is not an electric car.

It has two turbine axes.(compressor and power turbines)

  • An earlier version of the GT-45 gas turbine was used in a series-hybrid drivetrain in a 1971 Toyota Century.

One disadvantage of the earlier Chrysler turbine vehicle was the lag experienced before the turbine got up to speed; hence Toyota decision to use a hybrid drivetrain. The batteries and electric motor would provide instant torque when the accelerator was depressed while the turbine got up to speed.

The 1985 GTV concept used a CVT transmission instead of a hybrid drivtrain.

  • that would be even better for today ... but go with a smaller turbine engine-generator...

Also I see that Mitsubishi motors is developing an in-the-wheel electric motor and thus eliminating any need for any transmission

  • this car was thought of before toyota turned gay, so no.

  • And this cae wasnt put into production because? :(

  • Bad fuel consumption and low performance at slow speed are weakpoionts of this car.

  • I dont agree low performance at low speed ok but high fuel consuption no, the thing is that exhaust fumes are very toxic.

    all best again

  • And bad fuel consumption was a side effect of turbine engines' nature. They had to always run at %75 or more load to produce power, provide compression, and be efficient by enough air flow through regenerators. (Imagine a conventional car that always runs at 4000- 6000 rpm -even when waiting on traffic- ) \\ IMHO These cars had been invented in wrong time. - Turbine driven alternator which charges huge solid capacitors and Modern Li-ion batteries could be fine.

  • Who wouldn't want a car that sounds like a dust buster?

  • i would, any day

  • I knew I wasn't crazy...I KNEW I had seen this car once before!

    THANK YOU! :-)
