  • There are two types of countries in Europe: those that dub films and series, and those that not. In countries where they dub, (Spain, France, Germany), etc, the level of English of the average citizen is very low. In those where they dont dub (Portugal, Scandinavia, Holland, etc), the level of English of the average citizen is very high. Simple as that. Dubbing was invented by fascits regimes in order to prevent "foreign influence" on the local people, that's why it should be forbidden.

  • What is the meaning of May Day?

  • @Vorasz According to Wikipedia, "Mayday" is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in voice procedure radio communications. It derives from the French "venez m'aider", meaning "come help me".

  • @Vorasz

  • @gpcardiffuk Yearh, I know.. But at that time, I really couldn't write in english XD

  • The Germans really pronouce 'th' as s... But I'm sure I mispronouce lots of words too. And I can't pronouce the 'R' in the German way, they always make jokes about it :a

Accents never really 'fade'... You'll always mispronouce something... but I really am proud of mine :D

  • my dad can't pronounce the "TH" sound because it's not in his language -_-;

  • soooo lustig!

  • "what are you sinking about" this is so f**kin hilarious, ive seen it many times before but only just now did i add it to my favourites

  • One thing that strikes me - apart from the fact that it's a very funny commercial:

the English that bloke is using is not quite so bad - as a matter of fact, he puts the preposition "about" at the end of the sentence, which is not exactly what all my students would be doing ...

    Bernie W., English teacher, Germany

  • Why does the guy on the Coast Guard have to know English? He's in his country after all. The one who needed to know the language in this case was the English one. After all, if a German boat sinks in the US coast, does the Coast Guard speak any German? I don't think so.

  • @xian1978

perhaps because the international maritime and emergency language is English and not German? even German ships and German coast guard have to communicate in English with each other :-)

  • @xian1978

English is a language used for intercontinental and international conversation, which means that it should be spoken everywhere. If you were in Japan, I guess you'd also speak English instead of Spanish, and I guess you'd also wouldn't want to have to learn every language out there only because you might, one day, happen to be somewhere it is spoken.

  • @Unzenhoff This is the case... he's not in another country, he's in HIS own country. He didn't need to know English to survive. I'm not against English as a lingua franca, I don't only speak English, but I'm also a translator. The thing is, I don't entirely agree with the way the concept is shown in this particular ad.

  • @xian1978

The German is working in Germany, yes, but he is working as someone who is in contact with people from other countries. If he was working in a hotel, he'd also have to talk to foreigners and would also need English.

However, the person on the ship can't know German if he was just passing by the country on his way to e. g. Russia, because he couldn't know beforehand that he might need it.

I'm sorry if this might come off as rude, but your logic isn't very logical to me.

  • @Unzenhoff My logic goes in this way: The ad tries to convince you that you need English, that if you don't speak English something can happen to you... in this case nothing happened to him, he didn't even realized what's going on, that's what I mean. Maybe if the German was the one in the ship and they sink because his communication is not effective, I would think the ad makes sense. This is the kind of thing you can explain better face to face, sharing a coffee or something like that :-P

  • It makes a big difference!

  • LMAO

  • LKkMFDVLDFMB

  • What a loser XDDDDD I'll thank my English teacher for showing me this video XDDD

  • im teacher showed me this too

  • can't stop laughing everytime I see it!

  • whats funny is that my grandma is german and she talks like that and when i showed this to her she thought it made perfect sense that he was asking what they were "sinking" about XD

  • @MoonlightWalks

I'm german and the first times i saw this video i thought "What is the joke here"? Hehe.

  • @Ahnentreue

This comment is funny as the video itself. :))))

  • @Ahnentreue

    XD Ja ich auch

  • *Facepalm*

    ... :D

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  • English: It's that crazy.

    Yet I still love it.

Rock on you crazy Euros, rock on like a diamond in the sky with Lucy.

  • It was important. Because if you sink. I do not know what you do so If I'd been that person I'm afraid I'd have done the same. I must improve my English. Really..

  • i lol'ed hardcore .

    fricken hilarious !

  • "what are you... sinking about" :)

  • It's mildly funny, but as someone has said Berlitz isn't up to much..

    Vicky

  • Why did this need subtitles? I mean really.

  • Great Ad, however, Berlitz method & their material really suck! Overpriced and useless.

  • what are you zsinkin about?

    ¿de que esta hablan though?

  • @Js00312 If you have a strong german accent in english you pronounciate 'th' as 's'. So the guy who was sending the signal was saying 'We are sinking' but the german at the coast guard understood 'We are thinking'. So he asked 'What are you thinking about?'

  • very good ! :D:D:D:D

  • Best. Comercial. Ever.

  • we are ''sinking'' about death :O:O

  • Akarom még Bmw-750ila

  • OMFG !!!!!!

  • j man wie geil!!

German people can spak english without him!!xD :p

  • Hahaha! Hilarious!

  • lol MG this movie is great.

  • My dudes and dudettes- whether or not you realize it- the simple fact of the matter is that all spoken language is dialectic- EVERYBODY has an accent! I teach ESL- as a "Vermonner" or Vermonter, even I struggle with the "proper" pronunciation of my own states name! Ha!

I sink it is important to be able to make fun of yourself before you go about risking an accusation of prejudice as we see here- no?

And more important than that? To get a sense of humor! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Ha ha ha...

  • Interlanguage, hum ? ;-)Selinker, hum? ;-)

  • @vbillythekidt

No no, sorry. One thing is an accent, another one is lacking basic sounds of the language. "TH" in English is a sound that does not necessarily exist in other languages (especially latin ones...) still it can and MUST be learned.

  • @vbillythekidt hahahha

  • Unfortunately, I know a lot of Germans who DO speak English like this..(I am German myself and always try my best to avoid the slightest accent:D)

  • wait till you hear a japanese speak english!

  • Japanese?? They don't speak too bad, I think chinese accent it's hard to understand!

  • I think you don't know very well Japanese people. XD

Italians too have an horrible accent..

  • Well, I go to University and I know plenty of International Students. Japanese though, have an accent but not as bad as Chinese students! In fact few of my friends are Japanese and their English is perfect! Maybe you have something personal against Japanese people (no offense). I still respect your opinion though :) Have a great day!

  • Maybe I don't know very well Chinese people =P

  • But you're friends live in Canada and go to school there and so on. We talk about people that went to school in their country.

But I have to agree somehow, japanese haven't got such a probleme in pronunciation but more in grammar...never heard of "Let's fighting love!"?^^

  • @FireOps speaking of grammar.... although I'm german, I'm pretty sure it's "your friends".

And I love this commercial... sterotypes suck, but oh well, it's funny ^^

  • This is for sure one of the funnier adverts i have ever seen.

  • Areti says it better!!!

  • YIPES! That was funny!

  • guys it is definitely THink, its just a typical german mispronunciation. germans often speak "TH" like "S", the rest of this word here is the same, so "ink".....

  • LOL

  • How can there even be an argument about what he says? "What are you thinking (zinking) about" makes sense and is a great joke in this context, "what are you singing about" doesn't and isn't.

  • hahhaahha great! :P

  • You have persuaded me.

  • As far as I'm concerned:

-We are sinking, we are sinking!

    -What are you "singing" about?

Of course "thinking" also goes well... who knows...

  • Ok, but it sure makes no sense.

Just for you to know, we Brazilians (mis)pronounce the "soft th" sound with an /f/ sound, while the French, Germans and others (mis)pronounce it with an /s/ sound.

And with the preposition "about", I'm sure the joke is about this problem and the verb is "think".

  • @leeandersonbr

Haha yes that's right, in the Balkan region, especially in Ex-Yugoslavia they pronounce it as /d/?!!!

For me it sounds kind of a dz or ds sound dddzoose=those?

  • @leeandersonbr yeah it's about think

  • @MindIsPower55 its def thinking :o

  • @ateaparrot

Yes, it is "what are you thinking about". A guy called "leeandersonbr" has already enlightened me. Thanks anyways.

  • So obvious yet so frickin' awesome!!

  • LMAO.

  • That is soooo fucking funny, awesome commercial!

  • thinking or singing?

  • They are "thinking" about some help which they not gonna get from the German coastguard in this case :)

  • omfg i laughed my ass away OMG thats so fuking hilarious!!!

  • funny!

  • hallo? zis iz dee German Coast guard!

    What are you sinking about?

  • thinking about!

  • ggraadaar!! love it..

  • thats too funny

  • hat ez kesz :))))
