I'm really very impressed. Nothing like this on any UK roads as far as I know.
Markings like this would be great my town centre. Bicycles tend to take very idiosyncratic routes - on the pavement (illegal), in the gutter, the door zone etc. And traffic doesn't even go very fast in the centre of town.
I called Charlie Gandy and told him NOW would be a great time to "build a bridge" between LB and Signal Hill using Redondo Ave.
Making Redondo Avenue bicycle friendly makes sense... the streets are wide only partial sidewalks... Redondo can take one from the beach to DMV, the Health Department, Adult School, Military, DeVry and close to 90808 and 90815.
It is great to see sharrows in the LBC. I drove down 2nd Street yesterday. There were many cyclists, but I didn't see any actually using the lane. All of the cyclists I saw were outside the green stripe in the door zone. I'm eager to take advantage of the big green stripe as soon as I can. LB cyclists need to make it a point to ride this lane and help show others how the lane was intended to work.
Has anyone seen the newly lined bike paths down 1st, 2nd & Broadway in Alamitos Beach?
I think the taxpayers money could have been better spent by changing the existing parallel parking to angled to help alleviate the parking situation that plagues the city.
Currently, there is one parallel parking space for every two angled. The city would be better served with 50% more parking.
I'm sure someone from the city would argue that they would lose revenue from the lack of parking violations.
All cyclists and motorists should know and obey the rule that bikers ride on the right without a design this drastic. If motorists EXPECT cyclists to be on the right, because they always are, then they will leave two or three feet for them subconsciously. This is how it works for us in Boston (by the way we don't do bike lanes-7 miles total). To those out west where all the troubles with motorists happen: are there not enough of you or are some cyclists being reckless?
Bicycle operators should ride as far to the right as practicable? Leave five feet for clearance from door openings and you're right where those markings are, the safest place to ride.
"Share the road" takes on a proper meaning now. techzec, why wait for others? Be one of the others now!
If there are cars parked in parallel and you ride as far to the right as you can then if someone opens their car door you have an accident.
My first week of riding a bicycle for commuting purposes I had the same mentality, ride as far to the right and let cars easily by. On day 2 someone opened their door into me with no room to dodge (what, dodge left INTO traffic you suggest?) or to brake. The lady was lucky SHE wasn't hurt, thank god.
Thanks for the vid Russ. It'll be interesting to see how that works out.
I ride that street pretty regularly but usually stay to the right and let cars get past me. I guess if there's lots of other bikes using the sharrows, I'll join them. :)

So, how are the sharrows working out? It's been a couple of years; more riders?

Don't you love these people that say "we can't afford this" but don't mind paying to add more car lanes or more parking places

Richmond should do this on Grove Avenue for starters

"I'm a bicyclist myself."
Don't you love it when cagers pull this line to justify their viewpoint?

Riding safe isn't always riding far to the right.
