God bless all of you who post these things. What a privilege we have to be able to see these things. I always regretted not having seen Joan in Alcina..and here it is. Thank you!
Thanks coloraturafan2 for posting this, this was my favourite night at the opera seeing this in sydney back in 83 great to hear and see it again not just sutherland but the beautiful voices of elms, elkins, mcgregor and macdonald.
@mxwhisper I had never seen this production before (though I was aware of Sutherland's performances in this role). You are truly right about the production. Helpmann had a wonderful visual eye. Didn't he also do the movies The Red Shoes and Tales of Hoffman (with the combination of ballet and opera)? This really captures the look and feel of Baroque theater (love the waves in the ocean).
I'd have been gutted if this version was a better quality than the one I have on dvd - thankfully it isn't :) Recit/Aria Ombre Palide was sooooo good :D Why is it Handel's recits are always better than his arias??
Personally I'm very grateful Morgana didn't sing Tornami a vagheggiar.
@harpguy18 Because when you have someone like Joan, who else better to sing it?! Handel actually made it optional for either Alcina or Morgana to sing Tornami a vagheggiar.

I saw this magical production in Sydney and I will never forget it.
It was directed by another great Australian more famous for ballet Sir Robert Helpmann.
Thanks for this gem coloraturafan2

isn't morgana suppose to sing Tornami a vagheggiar?
harpguy18 7 months ago
@harpguy18 Well it is Morgana's aria but it is frequently sung by Alcina depending on the quality/calibre of the singers.
