And it ought to have been 10-0! Count the missed chances...& those were only the highlights.I seem to remember at least another 6 decent chances as well. Palace's finest-ever thrashing of Mank United!
Regarding Yogi.. anyone remember a Palace-Everton game where he absolutely clattered Alan Whittle (then Everton) right in front of the dugout and got sent straight off? Was that Yogi's debut match?
Hey mate, hows it going? you like football manager games right? i found this cool one online footy-manager com its very similar to the football manager game. check it out. its pretty cool actually. The season has just started so why not sign up today?
Further to my last comment, a quick Google reveals Shermans of all sizes, but there is a WW2 Sherman on display in Marseille which is surprisingly small, and I think that that one, or a similar one, was what I saw at the sacred Park of Selhurst..
Great memories. Having been a Palace fan for 49 years, I've seen quite a few good players, but I'm struggling to think of a more exciting player than Don Rogers. He really had it all. Explosive pace and sublime control. Wonderful stuff.
.. and yes, I do remember a tank parading around the pitch perimeter. If my memory serves me correctly, it was a US Sherman (relatively small), but I cannot think of which match it was. BTW A great game from Whittle as well.
@TalonsMister Thanks for the tank answer. As it is unlikely that we both imagined it, I will take it as proof that my sanity remains intact. I know it was a ManU game and I know that Palace won, but the rest is a blur. Thanks again.
i was t this game! had forgotten it for 30 years, what a great game ....yes i remember Don Rogers ....overlooked, a great player ... England could do with a Don Rogers now!
@snafutube - Strange question, I know, but I have a memory of watching a Palace vs ManU game on TV (BM or MotD) and them showing a tank shooting at the ManU players. It was suggested that this was the reason for the 5-0 drubbing. I don't suppose that you remember an exhibition tank at the match that was circling the perimeter of the pitch?
@63RYANS Hmmm, no i can't say as i remember a tank there! .......Selhurst Park perimeter is too narrow i think for a tank! ....... maybe it was the pre-match rendition of DC5's 'Glad All Over' they used to play & the Palace fans would thump the hoardings that put Man U off ....... i think this was the season Man U went down, (but it may have been the same year palace went down too! .... would have to check the records)
@snafutube must've been 72-73 this, i just checked & Palace went down this season, despite the great Don Rogers ..... United went down next season, 73-74.
2 points for a win, & 2 up 2 down back then. (which i think changed next season)
@snafutube Thanks for the reply. The memory is very vague but the tank part is clear. I am not sure that the tank was real, maybe just some sort of strange exhibition. It was only small - the size of a car, maybe. I know Utd lost convincingly, but I don't think it was as bad as 5-0. Maybe, I have the wrong game or maybe the wrong planet. Who knows? Thanks again.
Fantastic, I was there that day with a mate called Phil Bond who was a Man Utd fan. I have never seen it again until today. Wasnt Don Rodgers the absolute Don...
Wtf is wrong with this team 2009??? We are going down and fast. Only 2 month ago we fight serious of playoff place and now... Somebody told me what is happening there. STILL EAGLE
I remember this game like it was yesterday, it make a big mark on me as a 10 year old. When Don Rogers put the ball the other of Stepney and tapped it into the net I wanted to do the same in the playground. To my delight it worked!
And the rest of them weren't bad either: Paddy Mulligan, Charlie Cook, Alan Wittle and the great John Jackson in goal. It's true - they could easily have had 10.
Makes me cry to think Palace will never do this again....but football now is nothing like it was then. This was when football was real football.......COME ON YOU EAGLES!!!!!
Wow! Obviously every player was a hero for Palace, but that's as good a one man show as I think I've ever seen that Don Rodgers put on that afternoon; he controlled the game like Johann Cruyff. Did he ever get an England cap?
Not sure whether he played from England but he was transferred to CPFC from Swindon (where the manager Bert Head came from!) - I was there and it was a great game ...
i was there with my two brothers. i remember at the end, some Man U fans came in at the back of the Holmesdale End but despite having bloody heads, just stood and watched the end of this marvellous game.
Alan Whittle. One of the greatest enigmas to wear an Everton shirt. Could be world class on his day, but was prone to inconsistency. Done well for Palace when he was there.
That's right.Check out Whittle's goal in the Liverpool derby of 1970. Search "Everton 1970". When Everton won the league in 69/70 Whittle was expected to become one of the greatest Everton players of all time. But both he and that Everton side strangely never fulfilled their potential.
Don Rogers was Swindons loss Palaces gain. Was he as good as George Best, different type of winger, probably not quite. But as an Englishman, he was Alf Ramseys biggest mistake, we could have scored 6+ in World Cup Final. !!!!
This has to be the best video ever. I am a Palace fan but i really hate Man U!!! When did this 'thrashing' take place? - I have tried searching for a date but can not find one!!!
So sad that palace fans are still fapping over the memory of this.
