A great Verdi soprano - I personally always preferred her to Milanov because to my ears, she had more of the warm Italianate sound in her voice.

I don't understand why so many people here can't appreciate Stella. Like you mentioned, at least she is far better than sopranos performing Leonora these days. You don't hear this kind of huge spinto voice with such creamy timbre any more.

Voix très intéressante, à la façon de Callas, elle "fait passer quelque chose" qui n'a rien à voir avec les mots. Il y a un contenu, une vie, un drame à chaque note. Dommage qu'elle ne soit pas plus connue.

Grateful to Oneguin65. This and his other clips very much confirm what I have seen and read about Antonietta Stella. But for certain circumstances (some of her own making) she would have rivalled Tebaldi and Callas for top stardom over a longer period. She certainly had the voice, looks and stage presence to have done so.
