I don't understand why so many people here can't appreciate Stella. Like you mentioned, at least she is far better than sopranos performing Leonora these days. You don't hear this kind of huge spinto voice with such creamy timbre any more.
If this a live performance and not dubbed, it is amazing that she did that cabaletta with all its fast patter while walking up the stairs and not losing her breath.
Stella had a better top than Tebaldi and was a much better actress. In every other department, Tebaldi was the superior singer. Callas was in a class by herself. Could Stella sing Lucia, Isolda, Amina, and Abigaille?
Voix très intéressante, à la façon de Callas, elle "fait passer quelque chose" qui n'a rien à voir avec les mots. Il y a un contenu, une vie, un drame à chaque note. Dommage qu'elle ne soit pas plus connue.
this is a very different interpretation of all Taceas I have heard, passion voice and sentiment together with technical ease, all are here.. Brava signora..Number two's of the past would be not only the biggest stars of today but could also help tune up some professional ears
Grateful to Oneguin65. This and his other clips very much confirm what I have seen and read about Antonietta Stella. But for certain circumstances (some of her own making) she would have rivalled Tebaldi and Callas for top stardom over a longer period. She certainly had the voice, looks and stage presence to have done so.
Grandissima e meravigliosa Stella!!!!!
(ma chi è stato il direttore? la velocità della cavatina è spaventosa!! :-x )

A great Verdi soprano - I personally always preferred her to Milanov because to my ears, she had more of the warm Italianate sound in her voice.

She is amazing here. To bad no one sings like this and if they do they are not hired. Opera no longer exists. It needs to be revived.

Because their ears are corrupted by bad teaching of vocal technique that they learn from crap teachers. Then they no longer recognize greatness.

Stella one of the great voices of her time.
Overshadowed by Tebaldi and Callas for fame!
But she had a far superior voice also filled with the Italian style extinct nowadays...

I was referring to the fact she had a column of even and beautiful sound from top to bottom.
The 1950's and 60s gave us another golden age.
There were just so many singers that can reign.
Many never even came to New York. Yes, of course, Callas stands alone.

I am sure that Verdi during his whole life had STELLA in mind...

Yes! That's what I thought.
