Lyle Freaking Mays. He practically changes keys there around 4:15 or so and just keeps on going. How many times has he played this tune in his career by the time this is recorded and he still keeps it fresh? Whoa.
this man is in a world of his own when it comes to jazz. He does not have any peers. he is his own mastery jazz style. I love it. Now i love Pat Metheny, George Benson, Lee Ritenour, and Larry Carlton as well as Earl Klugh.
I heard this song late one night while making love to my husband in 1991 when this song came on. I couldn't remember the artist because i was too busy :) now after so many years i have finally found this song again in 2011 ;( 30 years.
@GigglingGirI U have great tastes in Jazz Guitarists! All of those guys u mentioned are amazing artists who have stood the test of time over the decades and have never fallen below anything but GREAT!

He's a genius. I heard him some time ago on a concert. He started with Phase Dance. His not afraid of simplicity in music. He knows simple things are the most beautiful.
1) sono tanto affezionato al sound del Daniele '78/82;
2) preferisco sonorità autentiche, anche se un po' datate;
3) il Pino Daniele dei primi tre dischi mi manca tanto. (ma forse questa è una ripetizione del punto 1).
very beautiful music. that's why it is just a shame, that the sound quality is rather modest. but I enjoy the mastership of Pat and Lyle and their compagnions anyway!
I saw him live in 89. It remains to this day my fav concert. I couldn't even hear him properly; his solos were bassy and blurred - on the 175, and the piano was rather inaudible in parts. It didn't seem to matter, the whole thing was just so musical, and there was an optimistic, positive atmosphere to the whole gig.
I agree lanae 1111, the Travels live record, and the Offramp album initiated me into the huge diverse world of Methenys great music and excellent musicianship.
It is not PMG touring in 2010, just Pat by himself. A new album release "The Orchestrion Project" and tour. Pre-sales start Nov. 4th. He's posted this project on his site and tour details. Check it out
lonaticc, if you view Pat's site he is getting ready to tour, but only by himself. The Orchestrion Project is the title, kind of a one man band thing with acoustic and acousto-electric instruments. He did hint at a PMG project in the "not too distant future". I believe he's doing projects he's never had a chance to do because of PMG and PMG Trio recording and tour obligations. So, we will have to wait.
Thanks for posting this great tune. Whats the deal with the band? It's been way too long since they've toured. Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays ever plan on rejoining or what? Any info would be apreciated if anybody knows.
Yeah, but on the website it says nothing about "The Group" reuniting. Sounds like another Pat Metheny Trio or solo project.
I hope your right and it is The Pat Metheny Group going on tour in 2010. It'd be the first time they (The Pat Metheny GROUP) toured since 2005, maybe even longer than that.
Yeah, there's a YouTube interview with Pat done by an Italian fellow. Pat says that he and Lyle talk all the time, they also PLAY music all the time. Amazingly still, after all these years.
Lyle Mays came to WMU to do a clinic for the jazz majors...I am a guitarist, but Lyle is a true inspiration...his solo on First Circle blows me away every time...
Considered the biggest and prob, best free show given at le Festival International de Jazz de Montreal back in the 80s...I was in that insanely large crowd, first jazz fest, no less...but the mood was so amazing. That's what I remember..the music, and how the people came together to love it, together..it was a special night.
Same here, I started listening to him in 1983. He is the biggest influence in my life, not just music. Sadly, he rarely comes to my part of the world and I only got to watch him live 4 or 5 times in the last 26 years.
the perfect song? Pat Metheny is apart as Steve Vai is. You have many great guitar players, but only a few with such a talent. I dont even want to talk about metheny the composer, this is another bluffing skill of his...
Look for the older performances of this tune. This one, sadly, has a case of samba flu. There is a reason why The Group recently returned to its quartet roots.
I first heard Pat's music on a jazz show back in 85. I was hooked ever since--even more so when I saw his first live show in Portland OR. A true musician. Lyle too.
Phase Dance, one of my all time favorites. I just love this guy, and his music, sometimes I just can't turn him off. Keep putting him out there, so there is alway Pat to listen to.
I wish I had some video to add for all you PM fans. Yeah!
Metheny & Mays are two genious that fortunately give us the pleasure to be seen together like in this fantastic song. their songs make me feel in another dimension
Mr. yourcannuck for its experience. The Pat has the power to change the life of the people as well as changed mine. A great one I hug and everything of good. Jailton. Rio De Janeiro. Brazil
First time I saw the Pat Metheny Group was in Waitsfield Vt. At the Vermont Jazz festival. Glenn Ellen ski area. I stood and applauded. Never was I bowled over at music like that before. I was lucky enuf to see them at the Paradise in Boston several more times, Brillant!!!!!!!!!
Before my time! I moved to Vermont in 88 and I don't remember that. Imagine Metheny in Waitsfield! I also saw him at the Paradise a couple of times back prior to 88 (as I was living in Rhode Island), and once at a free show on the Boston Commons...plus a bunch of other places.
Ever see his brother Mike Metheny on flugelhorn? He's a farily straight-ahead jazz man who has been playing in the Boston area back then. I've lost touch with him now. Really nice guy.
I first saw PMG in Gatanou Quebec in 1982. We had to hike a half mile into the woods. When I arrived there was then a long haired Pat in the middle of offramp, with Nana Vasconcelos and a then shy Lyle Mays at the piano and essentially the same band he still plays with today. The stage was a grassy hillside and during the 3 hour show people were rolling around in a sort of ecstasy. It changed my attitude toward life and music, even after decades. What an experience!
Big fan of Pat and Lyle starting back in 1978 when I was in college. New Chatequa and American Garage albums back then were on the turntable all the time... along with all the early Steely.
Lyle Mays opens and closes this tune with a sweep across an AUTOHARP! Remember that from your first grade music teacher?
Fantastic keyboard player. For some very contemplative stuff listen to the old As Falls Wichita Fall So Fall Wichita Falls.
Absolutely! I started listening to Pat when I was 15 (almost thirty years ago) and the As Falls... album was the first I ever bought - I love his music more every year! Those who don't "get" it must not have a blue sky in their world
e3: mos def. Personally I felt that his few years of effort were the best. After Frist Circle it started going down, Last Train Home, Sill Life Talking, etc, seemed to be getting very formulaic.
Yeah I know. first listened to 80/81. After that I was completely into this and all the musicians he played with. Now that is now getting on to 30 years. I've seen him maybe 20 times in various formats and groups all over North America. I just never get tired of it.
Those who truly know the Pat Matheny Group will know their signature sound comes not from Pat but from Lyle Mays on Piano and Keyboards ...4:00 to 4:45 Lyle Mays=Genius
hey loopy.i felt it was only fair to listen to the segment you suggested before i replied still trying to figure it out? while it was a nice ending to lyles solo i am completely lost as to how it defines their signature sound? the operative word here is THEIR The group has its sound because of BOTH Pat and Lyle and the amazingly creative talents they BOTH bring to the table the only thing I can figure is you must be a keyboard player otherwise you wouldnt have made that totally niave statement
I believe, and I hope the other viewers will correct me if I am wrong, that he's playing a Guild acoustic and his Gibson ES-175. This clip appears to be from before he met Linda Manzer (who builds his acoustics now) and before he signed with Ibanez (who builds his custom line of jazz guitars). That said, in all of his interviews Pat really tries to stress that the rhythm and melodic ideas within his music are much more important than the equipment he uses. It's all about the tune!
Yes it´s his 1958 Gibson Es-175, that guitar is so road worn that he dosent take it on tour anymore, The Ibanez he is playing now sound just as nice IMO. I play a 1957 Es-175 myself(also with a single humbucker like Pat´s) and i can´t get a sound anywere near his, 50% of your guitar tone in in the fingers.
yes my fried you are right bout the equipment being used in the video, and also very correct that a good guitar or bass makes a better player, or make him sound good but yet its the touch in his fingers and how he/she feels it on the inside is what makes the music sound beautiful.
Forgot how good this was. First saw him on "Visions" cable TV in Anchorage, Alaska 1978 or '79. High school was such hell, would come home in the aftrenoon, lay about in a bean bag chair and watch Pat Metheny in between hockey games and Ted Turner Atlanta Braves baseball. All we could get was WTBS out of Atlanta, Braves were terrible then, hardly nobody in the stands. But for Anchorage it was that or a Saturday morning game on NBC. Anyhow, Metheny provided respite. Thanks....(Bruce Deile)
I can upload the original song from the 1978PMG CD, if you'd like. I don't believe that Nana was with the group back then on the '78 version, though. Am I wrong on that? :-)
hey love jazz1211 that would be awesome!seem to remember this on a video but it may be on the travels cd.still awesome if you could!do you have as witchita fall so falls witchita album
it maybe on travels cd but there is a live track that has been haunting me and comes into my head from time to time like they do! There is helicopter part way through the composition it reminds me of Nam although i wasnt there!you then hear Nana wailing!!!
Hey Silkychief, I LOVE the Travels CD! (and all of his 70's/early 80's stuff btw) You're thinking of the song "Goin Ahead w/ As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" from that CD. I have it, but I believe it's something like 17 mins long...I don't know if I can post it, since there's a 10 min limit on vids. I'll give it a shot, if you'd like. :)
cool!!!!!!!!!!:)tried to get hold of cd on itunes cant find it any suggests? have you checked out lyles first album?awesome partic.Bill Frissel(Guitar)check on track called Slink and also second to last track on that album awesome:)
I'm not a dude, btw. I'm a 'dude-ette'. I love Lyle Mays' solo work...one of my fav tunes by him is called "August" from the Street Dreams CD. I also like Slink; and his Pictionary CD is excellent. Folks think he doesn't get enough credit, being in the shadow of Metheny and stuff. But I've seen Metheny twice in concert, and both times Mays got the loudest applause w/standing ovations! lol
hey nothing personnel couldnt tell with the photo!yeah cant say I noticed re the applause seen Metheny 3 times awesome!I'll try out the other stuff of Mays. Would love it if you could post Goin ahead.
No problem chief...but wait!!! Does my photo really make me look like a guy!?! LOL Yikes! I'd better change it, huh? I'll post Goin in the next few days, but like I mentioned, I don't think the whole 17 minutes will upload. I think vids are restricted to 10mins. Let's see what happens. Take care.
The tangents some people go off on is unbelievable and really irritating. Why not stick to the topic of the clip? It's MUSIC. Post your religious views elsewhere, please!
I didn't start this. If you notice, I haven't even been in here for several days. Someone sent me a comment and I am in the process of replying. GOD BLESS YOU. I LOVE JAZZ!!!!!
Lord Jesus Christ, Yeshua is coming back soon. Pray to who you like. You will bow your knee to Almighty God, the great I AM and Jesus Christ either voluntarily or be forced to bow involuntarily. God said "I will have NO other gods before Me."
George Benson is not God. He is a Jehovah's Witness.
Pat Metheny is a musician/man, not God! I pray Pat Metheny & his family come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord & Savior.
Evidently he doesn't subscribe to the notion of god as you. Hes probably reading about dinosaurs, or about how the sumerians invented glue 1000 years before the bible says earth was created. Either that or his wife is getting an abortion. Either way he is living the dream.
who dislikes this??

I first heard Pat's music on a jazz show back in 85. I was hooked ever since--even more so when I saw his first live show in Portland OR. A true musician. Lyle too.

Phase Dance, one of my all time favorites. I just love this guy, and his music, sometimes I just can't turn him off. Keep putting him out there, so there is alway Pat to listen to.
I wish I had some video to add for all you PM fans. Yeah!

It's a Metheny/Mays composition. We often forget the man on piano.
And the rythm section is terrific.

First time I saw the Pat Metheny Group was in Waitsfield Vt. At the Vermont Jazz festival. Glenn Ellen ski area. I stood and applauded. Never was I bowled over at music like that before. I was lucky enuf to see them at the Paradise in Boston several more times, Brillant!!!!!!!!!
dunwirk 3 years ago

Blackdog2000Tube 3 years ago 5

Blackdog2000Tube 3 years ago
Yeah I know. first listened to 80/81. After that I was completely into this and all the musicians he played with. Now that is now getting on to 30 years. I've seen him maybe 20 times in various formats and groups all over North America. I just never get tired of it.

Those who truly know the Pat Matheny Group will know their signature sound comes not from Pat but from Lyle Mays on Piano and Keyboards ...4:00 to 4:45 Lyle Mays=Genius
theloop13 3 years ago
hey loopy.i felt it was only fair to listen to the segment you suggested before i replied still trying to figure it out? while it was a nice ending to lyles solo i am completely lost as to how it defines their signature sound? the operative word here is THEIR The group has its sound because of BOTH Pat and Lyle and the amazingly creative talents they BOTH bring to the table the only thing I can figure is you must be a keyboard player otherwise you wouldnt have made that totally niave statement

jwalker99 3 years ago
which guitar is this?
ibanisse 3 years ago
I believe, and I hope the other viewers will correct me if I am wrong, that he's playing a Guild acoustic and his Gibson ES-175. This clip appears to be from before he met Linda Manzer (who builds his acoustics now) and before he signed with Ibanez (who builds his custom line of jazz guitars). That said, in all of his interviews Pat really tries to stress that the rhythm and melodic ideas within his music are much more important than the equipment he uses. It's all about the tune!
lionhearted99 3 years ago 3
Yes it´s his 1958 Gibson Es-175, that guitar is so road worn that he dosent take it on tour anymore, The Ibanez he is playing now sound just as nice IMO. I play a 1957 Es-175 myself(also with a single humbucker like Pat´s) and i can´t get a sound anywere near his, 50% of your guitar tone in in the fingers.
nickdrake1984 3 years ago 2
but he has the roland gk-1 synthetiser (The black thing in the back)
Dalpm 3 years ago
yes my fried you are right bout the equipment being used in the video, and also very correct that a good guitar or bass makes a better player, or make him sound good but yet its the touch in his fingers and how he/she feels it on the inside is what makes the music sound beautiful.

I saw him 2 years ago in Chicago from the 3rd row at Ravinia (outdoors). As you said, sounded like years back. Only now his hair is white!

I can upload the original song from the 1978PMG CD, if you'd like. I don't believe that Nana was with the group back then on the '78 version, though. Am I wrong on that? :-)

But I've seen Metheny twice in concert, and both times Mays got the loudest applause w/standing ovations! lol
lovejazz1211 3 years ago
hey nothing personnel couldnt tell with the photo!yeah cant say I noticed re the applause seen Metheny 3 times awesome!I'll try out the other stuff of Mays.

Take care.

To: Mr./Miss VitalRemains666
Lord Jesus Christ, Yeshua is coming back soon. Pray to who you like. You will bow your knee to Almighty God, the great I AM and Jesus Christ either voluntarily or be forced to bow involuntarily. God said "I will have NO other gods before Me."
George Benson is not God. He is a Jehovah's Witness.
Pat Metheny is a musician/man, not God! I pray Pat Metheny & his family come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord & Savior.
God bless you.

Evidently he doesn't subscribe to the notion of god as you. Hes probably reading about dinosaurs, or about how the sumerians invented glue 1000 years before the bible says earth was created. Either that or his wife is getting an abortion. Either way he is living the dream.
