I'm a huge fan of To Kill a Mockingbird. I literally finished about three hours ago. I can understand why not everybody will like it I felt in certain in areas it was lacking. But addressing your point of where am I from, I'm from the Isle of Man which is in the British Isle but I do find the book very American. The whole thing about biscuits confused me because what you call a biscuit we call scones or rock buns etc... Other than that I found it a great read when it actually got going.
I wasn't a fan of To Kill a Mockingbird because of the way it was written...I felt that the author made the main character seem too old...she was SUPER young...and she talked like she was an adult...it just didn't fit with me very well...I thought that the story was good...and that it COULD have been a great book if the main character was just a little older...but it's been like 10 years since I've read it...I may feel differently now
I'm trying to read a lot of classics. so far all i've read is The Picture of Dorian gray, a bunch of Shakespeare, Catcher in the Rye, Oliver Twist, and Lord of the Fies. I want to read this book (To Kill a Mocking Bird), Wuthering Heights, and Don Quixote.
I am American and I have to say Iloved the world it was set it; it felt familiar to me in terms of the wa the kids played and had little myths and such. I do have to say I felt a little bit of the sense of distance that you're talking about; maybe BECAUSE it's children, but I liked it. Not LOVE, but a reasonable, appreciative, smiling, like :)
I had to read this book during my 10th grade year. I can't really comment on the first half due to the fact that in high school I just faked my way through books i didn't care for. I did read the second half of the book, and while I think it was "good" I personally would never read this book again. Even now thinking about it, I can't really recall any specifics about the book, why the first half was bleh but the second was worth my time. Probably something about needing to pass the class.
THIS IS SO WIERD!!! I started reading To Kill a Mockingbird about a week ago, and I just thought 'Hmmm.....I hope MaxieMagyx does a Book Review of this, that'd be cool...' and then I go into my Subscriptions and TA-DA~ xD There it is! xD YOU'RE AWESOME :3
I read To Kill a Mockingbird a few years ago and I disliked it. But the odd thing is, if there are allusions to it in other books (like if a character in another novel is such an allusion to say, Boo Radley, that it's painful), I get so...frustrated.
@TheMetalheadBookworm That is quite odd =P Or maybe it isn't? Cuz if you don't like the book then of course you won't like when other things remind you of it? Maybe? Haha. I dunno.
I've read 'To Kill a Mockingbird' about two years ago and I loved it. I personally felt that Lee managed to really explore the interracial conflicts of the time. I will agree that it's a book that is more popular amongst Americans but I am European and did not struggle to identify with the story or to follow the characters. As you said reading a book is a personal experience :)
I really liked this book, I remember being really flashed by the story and writing. But, always a but, I read it somewhat 15 years ago, and I don't remember many details. I am German, but I lived in America back then, so I was sort of very Americanized at that time, and could relate to it.
It does have a *very* American feel. It made me feel like I was stepping into my grandparents' childhood. Each page was filled with an almost tangible rural depression era feel. I could picture the whole thing taking place in a very small old town that I once attended school in. After 16 years, I was driving through that town again, and as I passed a house that had become part of that story for me, I thought, "Boo Radley's house".
I read it, I didn't like it, and I'm Canadian. I read it for school. Reading a book not because I want to, but because I have to, plus having to answer questions, generally leads me to dislike it. I forget pretty much everything about it though, so it's possible I could like it if I ever decided to read it again.
If I hadn't read it in my English class theirs probably no way I would have seen all the symbolism and small details throughout the book, that being said I didn't really enjoy it.I wonder if it's being called a classic affects the reviews because even if people dont like it their seems to be a certain appreciation for it. It reminds me of the quote by Mark twain classics;books which we praise but dont read.
@MissPrint77 You probably have a point. But I think it's more like... it's a classic BECAUSE it's praise worthy. Or rather, because the subject and the way it's written is praise worthy. I've seen a lot of movies that I want to like, because I think they're well made and powerful, but.. I just can't seem to like them. This was kinda like that.
@SniffyHoppy What you don't know is there's a whole community of booktubers out there who love and appreciate reading, and watch videos like Kaisa's because they have similar tastes. However, since I deal with trolls like you quite often, I know that there's not anything I can say to make you waver from your silly comment. So I'll just say this. You're an ass, who clearly is jealous of people who are successful since you can't stop jackin' it to the Sears catalogue in the basement. Fuck off.
Book because she's been to Africa and knows more about it than we do, so she could connect to it and she liked it more than my class did, probably because not many people in my class have been to Africa.
I'd read To Kill A Mockingbird in my Freshman year of high school. I'm from America, and I do think that being in the place that TKAM took place makes the book a little more real, because things that have happened in America have been told to you since you've been alive and it creates a better connection with the characters and it makes things a little more real. I had to read Things Fall Apart last year and my English teacher has been to Africa, which is the setting of TFA, and she loves the b
I enjoyed this book. Its one of my favorites of the books we've read in school. The movie is good too. I'm from Southern portion of the US, so I come across people similar to the characters quite often :)
i read the book on my own, not for school. i liked but didn't love it...but then again i read it a long time ago, i might read it again to see how i like it now
noooooo! you forgot to say happy birthday. D: oh wells.
i'm american and we read it in my freshmen year of high school. i'd say i liked it compared to other books we were forced to read, but it's not one of my favorites or anything.
We read the book in high school when we were like 14-15, I say we because it was part of our classwork. I loved Atticus, he was my favourite character. Very influential on my life, which I know sounds horribly cheesy, but it's true. I thought the story was good, very well told, and I especially loved the court scenes, so powerful.
I've never gotten the love of this book. It was one of the most boring and difficult reads I've ever been through. I did like the movie though. Great lighting in this vid btw ;)
It's not uncommon for American students to be assigned that book Freshman year of high school. Some don't like having to write an essay about it afterwards, but most enjoy the movie.
great video, think you did a wonderful job touching on the important aspects of the book. I do like your version of the cover. The copy I have is a much more plan cover.
You should read The Secret Life of Bees. I think you'd really like it. It's totally character driven and it reminded me of To Kill a Mockingbird for some reason...
@MaxieMagyx Well it certainly is a classic. Very well written and character driven, but it might be hard to relate to the main characters, but not nearly as much as To Kill a Mockingbird's. I don't want you to get into another read you can't relate to since that's quite important for you, but it is a great book IMO.
Hmm, sorry you feel that way, I never read the book, but I do remember the classic movie starring Gregory Peck. From what saw of it, it's a masterpiece.
I love 'To Kill A Mockingbird' but I'm not American, I'm Scottish!
I think I just love the fact that it's so well written, the plot is so emotionally charged and I love the characters. Atticus Finch is an amazing creation I thought, and I also love the movie so I always picture the wonderful Gregory Peck when I think of it haha :)
i loved the book :)
