Who are these smartypants comparing these giants to each other? They are good friends sharing the stage, having a good time. Do they look angry like they want to put each other in their place? I dont think so. Where does this competition attitude come from? Not musicians, thats for sure!
they are both soloing over the changes, but bruno is fudging the changes a bit with some of his licks, but this is probs only his second if not first time playing this tune cut him some slack
@deepfriedpankakes Totally agree, This is Mr. Wilkins tune so it's not suprising that his soloing is more into changes and harmonic structure of the tune. Jimmy is playing from paper...
Jack is actually playing over the changes which affords his solo far more depth and interest than Jimmys' solo, which uses fast runs to blur by the changes. Nice tune.
your subjective opinion given such finality annoys me...i feel otherwise and am just as right, and just as wrong as you are...i hope you understand that..
the first time i saw jack wilkins was in 1975. he was playing with buddy rich, in a quartet setting. He played with such heart and virtuosity - with a complete smile on his face - that i could not help but listen with complete amazement. regarding bruno's playing, WTF is that harmonic that he did , that was amazing!!
No, you are not. - And about the more or less interest: You should not forget that this one is a piece of Wilkins... - It is not a question which one is better - its a question about the approach. They are both brilliant!
I agree, Jimmy has amazing speed, but plays nothing memorable. This is the first I've heard Jack Wilkins, and I like him a lot, tasteful and thoughtful.
Jack is killer, i had the pleasure and honour (and he had the tolerance) of jamming with him duo style when he was in NZ a while back. Wicked time, chops, character, swing, AND humility. Jimmy's a great guitarist but i'm yet to be bitten into by his playing.
I really just enjoy this song as it is played here. I think it is hard to judge each guitarist as better than the other. They are obviosly both well rehearsed. I love both of there sounds. Actually it took me about three listens to actually distinguish the two apart.
Two of the best straight ahead players out there. I saw Jack years ago in NY, and he just keeps getting better. And Jimmy? There are only a few players who have that kind of facility.
nice. dude that frickin run with the harmonics Jimmy does is mad guds. its fun to check out how little Jimmy moves his fingers compared to the other dude.
It's the method he teaches. Throws out the mode books and works by "shapes". Very efficient. Isn't he opening a guitar teaching institute online or something?
Thats the whole root of Bruno's problem....he plays by "shapes" and all that ends up coming out is guitaristic cliche's that sound guitar bound and unmusical
I too would like to hear your playing if you think Bruno is so "unmusical"...I confess to being a closet musician, but I wouldn't be talking trash unless you can deliver yourself. And no, since I'm a female, I am not Jimmy talking to himself either....so wrong again.
I'd love to have Jimmy's "problem"! He can play as musically and lyrically as anyone on the planet, and then can rev it up to a level that only a handful of players can even approach.
I have to agree with archtop. He just plays like scalar generalization up and down fast, but the lines don't have much character(maybe add some more enclosure stuff, arpeggios, etc). It just sounds alot like hes just playing "blanket" major scale, which is ok sometimes but I think you need to at least play some different alterations on the ii and V and maybe some arpeggios outlining the harmony.

I just love this "For Baden" song that Jack Wilkins wrote.
On the "Trioart" album, Wilkins has a great version that's warm and beautiful and melodic.

now if i played like that at some corporate music store would every one shit their pants? just wondering.

No. You'd have to do it on guitar hero.

HHAAHAHA....but i can play a real guitar

I must agree that Jack Wilkins has more finesse in playing a bossa fell. But in straight hard-bop Jimmy is just a crazy monster.

Jack Wilkins sure is an excellent guitarist and makes me wonder about Mr. Bruno playing.
it seems Jimmy is playing many notes but it sounds less jazzy !!!
jack seems to be more interesting !!!
am i right ppl ?

They are both good, but the guy on the left hs a more melodic style. But they need to impress each other I guess, so I forgive the shredding!

Jimmy Bruno can play with the best but Jack Wilkins? Jack's really somthing special and a hell of a nice guy.
