@MrGintama96 there is a way to mod and jailbreak it so that you can use it for a wireless access point but then you get charged for the data when you do that too. not really honestly sure about the other sprint phones being able to call for free or anything like that though. don't think it's possible because the phones all connect using a handshake off of the ESN number from your individual phones, might be able to internet call through your PC with it though
@TheDougtechcrew sorry to hear that. it really does help but they have to open up another line on your account for the airave to be sent to you. it really does help a lot though. if your signal is that bad there i don't understand why your mom won't call to get it , maybe you should show her this video too so she can see the difference for herself first hand.
Does this help with text messaging as well? I get absolutely no signal in my new place and Sprint is sending me this in 4 weeks cause of a backlog but I hardly make voice calls. Occasionally when I do get signal at home, I get bombarded with all the texts I missed while my signal was gone.
@adorkablejuliep yes this will help with regular phone signal and 3G quality data services also, unfortunately it doesn't operate in the right range to get 4G but if that was available here already we wouldn't have 0-1 maybe 2 bars of signal either (that's the theory any way) lol but as for the signal and the data yes it helps tremendously with them both but you also have to have a good internet connection because it also borrows some of that to help with the network signal.
Im waiting for mine now.. wheres the best place to put it? do walls make a big difference? Can I boost other company's signal too? I have a metro pcs phone that on july 11 just stopped working in my house after a year of great coverage. Im thinking that my neighbor might have had this thing? whaddaya think? xD
@murf751 The best place to have it is close to your highspeed internet connection because it has to connect to that also but there is a little GPS puck looking antenna that helps with the signal too. you get pretty good signal , not sure about the Metro PCs thing because i am honestly not sure what kind of service they have but it does boost the signal of most CDMA phones. there i a way to lock it down to specific numbers though so others can't use it with the software for it
@drbejarjj that's how we got ours too the only ones that are charged for it are the people that want one simply because they don't get full bars on thier phones but aren't nessecarily in a poor signal area. it's worked pretty well for the almost year that we've had it now. no complaints so far
@checo165 No i was told it doesn't, however it does do faster 3G for sure with the ariave but if you are in an area that gets 4G you shouldn't need the airave in the first place unless you are in one of those coverage black holes that everyone seems to be plagued with
@wolfeman220940 yes i suppose i should do an update on it but it sometimes puts our text messages back and forth in a strange order in our phones and on really rare occasion it will ring on the persons phone that is calling us and our phones never ring at all (that's when we just unplug and reset it and all is fine again) aside from that though it's been great, works like a charm and we have a strong signal pretty much everywhere here at home.
Well, it's in the basement because I have a basement apartment. My window is just above ground level.....under the dining room that was added onto the house . I have the GPS antenna in the window. I may unwrap the cord tomorrow to see just how far it'll reach so I can mount it outside somewhere. I'm about to order the Wilson Electronics "Sleek" so I'll get better coverage in my truck.
@daddytech I could move the unit to the main floor but that would mean moving the modem and router as well. I have a dedicated line for the modem so I'd rather not move that. I came home today and my phone had no bars. I had to restart the Airave and now all is well.
@daddytech I actually just got back inside from doing a range test in my yard. I'm in the basement so that is what affects it the most but, I went outside to the front of the house and the signal dropped to 1-2 bars. Further out to the driveway and 0-1 bar. Getting closer to the unit, coming thru the garage it had nothing until I got in the room with the unit. Just as you sent your message, I lost 3G as I'm sitting 3 feet away from it. Full bars, but no 3G. :-(
@JoeRnCT If you have it in a basement it may not pick up so well, the 3g cuts off occasionally to save battery on your phone the airave does help with 3g but you may need to reposition the unit up out of the basement. that's not a very good place at all for recieving the signal if nothing else if you have a window in your basement you may want to put the GPS module either outside the winow or if you can do it move the whole thing upstairs. that would still allow it to work in the basement too
I emailed Dan@Sprint and one of his people answered. I told her my situation, she had the Sprint "Engineering team" check my tower signal and whatever else.........and she emailed me today saying I can get a free Airave and she'll waive the monthly charge. However, I need to have a new line activated and using the Airave counts against my minutes. I emailed her back asking if I need to pay for the new line, and if it counts against my minutes only when I make calls, or just having it powered up
@JoeRnCT It only counts as minutes as long as you are using the phone talking. you don't get charged just because it's on and plugged in internet and messaging are figured up seperate so none of that is going to count against you that way. and you don't get dinged for double minutes when you are talking on it either just your normal usage. I don't know why they mentioned it like you do from the way you described it.
@daddytech I guess it was just the way she worded it. I herad back from her today. The new line activation fee ($36) will be waived, and she clarified that I only get charged for minutes while making a call. I gave her the go-ahead to place the order. Hopefully they send me the newer "Airvana" model.
@JoeRnCT as far as we were told that's the only one they are shipping right now, that's the one we got without even asking,. good luck man and i hope it's as beneficial to you as it has been to us also right now. let me know how it goes man.
At least you get some bars. I get nothing in my basement. Outside in my driveway I get 1 or 2 bars. I wonder if Sprint will give me one for free. I can't see having to pay extra to get the signal I'm supposed to be getting for my $80/mo.
@JoeRnCT yeah if you aren't getting the signal, give them a call and tell them about it maybe they'll hook you up too. worth a shot at least. if we didn't have ours the calls would drop all the time here at our house but as soon as we leave the yard some how there's signal for days just not here and not at our neighbor's behind us either one.
The version you have is actually called the Airvana...the one I currently have until tomorrow is called the Airave...The main difference between the 2 is the one you have does 3G...and the Airave does 1x data. Only problem with the Airave I have is that there is a known issue with the two devices...So Sprint hooked me up to this new one...just have to send the old one back...and use the new one.
@ChrisHoyt after a good honest run with the "Airivana" i am not too impresed with it at all. It shows 6 bars of signal right here by it and 4/5 all the way out to the end of our 800 ft driveway but doesn't do anything for our signal behind the house at all and does not help at all with data, we still have to use our own wireless for any data at all , not too impressed with it just glad it's free.
@daddytech - Dial *99 from your phones...that links your phones with the airvana. I use the old Airave right now...1x data is horrible...it works but its slow. There may be something blocking the signal to the back of the house. Hope you can figure out whats going on. I was supposed to get mine today, but UPS f'd it up.
@ChrisHoyt that let me know i am on the airave coverage (didn't do that before it just worked) but don't see any difference in data so it's obviously just for the voice and text messages, guessing the data is still separate.
@daddytech - My luck yet again, hooked up my Airvana...phones show full signal...yet nothing....wont connect...someone calls..goes straight to VM...Called Airave department and I have a touble ticket currently set. This crap is really pissing me off now...hope they find a fix. Hopefully when works I will let you know...btw there is no charge for this device, the old one was $4.99..no charge for this one....
@ChrisHoyt sorry for your luck on this one man, i know ours acts screwy some times too ( i think it's because of Comcast though) have 6 full bars here but can't stay connected some days any better than if we were still doing without the airave alltogether they told us it was free for 2 years and then $4.99 a month after that if we wanted to keep it still kinda on the fence about that one because if i get a call when leaving the house it drops the call when it does a hard handoff to the tower
@daddytech - On the old Airave it was $4.99 a month after 2 years...I was told by them now that this new one doesn't have any charges associated with it...for as long as you have it. I beleive we are Sprints test bed for this unit since it's not truly avaiable yet through Sprint Channels...
Yeah that's a known issue with the Airave...dropping calls when leaving its coverage...and whatnot...
@ChrisHoyt yeah i believe if it did a soft hand off God forbid it might actually increase thier coverage area. and i wouldn't even mind serving to other people that pass by here if it would hold the call once i left my home coverage or worked for more than just in the front of my house.
@BA7444 you actually have to qualify for it with the sprint tech support customer care and we did simply because we've always had issues using the phone at home. I don't know exaclty what poor service quality got us the airave but i think it's that we averaged 0 -2 bars of signal lately aside from that everything has always worked great here even the 3g

Is there a way to hack it to let any sprint phone connect and call for free?
