this isnt even nearly one of daves better solos, he seemed a bit rusty on this gig....but guess what, hes still better than anyone on his worst day...thats what scares me the most
Awesome drummer! I had the opportunity to meet him at the "Blue Notes" in New York City. He plays with incredible precision and delivers a lot of energy on stage.
He just seems to put more flavor into his solos. More cymbal work, more technique, and much more random - he doesn't telegraph his fills like others do.
thanks dave , the drum clinic in dublin was amazing, sorry i didnt get to ask my question, some twat was askin about your monitor mix and how u like it,... eh dick head thats his mix not yours get it.... anyway dave thanks how the hell do u get ur weaker snare hand that good its insane man, you have the shnizel...
OMG This Is The 1st Ever drum Video I Ever Saw :'(.. I had to be about 10 watching this on an old Slow Dell computer that took half an hour to load this video..Good times :)
I really love Dennis Chambers, Neil Peart, etc., but if I had to get drum lessons, I would want Weckl to teach me. His art of teaching is just as strong as his world-class drumming.
@progrockman85 That CANT be true. By his own admission, in an interview he said his swing wasn't as good as a lot of the drummers he encounters. Now - dont get me wrong, he's world class. But he cant be the best if he struggles with a style. To be the best drummer in the world, you'd have to be the best at doing everything that could be done on the instrument.
@ScreamxBloodyxGore It's a 15" Zildjian Azuka latin multi crash with 3 rivets clustered. I helped set up his kit a while back when he was still with Zildjian and i even played it. It's an amazing sound!
Awesome drumming! can I ask if these kind of skills and awesome beats just sort of come naturally after a while of drumming? Like one day you play something and think "Wow, I couldn't do that a few weeks ago!" or something? :P
@NPC919 It doesn't just come suddenly but if you get a camera and record yourself every couple of weeks you can see that the kind of improvements you've make in your playing are amazing. The thing about drumming is that it's hard. There's no trick or secret to it and just practicing doesn't cut it. Practice the things you are bad at.
@DamesDolman My opinion is that to prefer one drummer over another don't requier the one drummer to have more skill than the other. Its a strange consept.
One of my favorite drummers are thomas lang, but that doesn't mean hes the best. I believe that tiny details is what makes a drummer someones favorite. And most drummers won't be able to explain why their favorite drummer is their favorite.
I know this sounds newbish of me, but I prefer the drummer playing stuff thats easier to follow for the other instrumentalists, instead of syncopating this much.
But its totally different styles of playing :S its like trying to compare Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton, just cant work. Also - Dave has like, what - 15 years extra experience over Royster and yet Royster is still considered the drum prodigy. I dont think anyone Tony's age can play as good as him so imagine what he will be like when hes's Weckl's age. But dont get me wrong, Weckl is awesome :D
My little friend, Pinto the Grover Elf, tells me this type of simple drumming bores him.
You see, Pinto studied the percussive excellence of Don Frijoles Chango at La Universidad de Ontario British Texas during the 1960's and has been practicing the art of fine drumming and salsa making for 16 hours a day for 40 years.
As a result he's the gawd of Tango Salsa Amigo drumming and makes this guy look like he should be making flapjacks at Waffle House.
This is definitely for drummers... advanced drumers. Or at least people with a trained ear. Whether he's known or not or where do styles come from or if this suits an elevator (which I agree)... I don't see how this relates to the epic lvl of awesomeness of this guys technique and taste.
The only reason why people say rock drummers like Neil Peart are the best in the world is because they played for bands that were considered the best in the world without Rush Neil Peart would be just another drummer hes not even close to the leve Dave is on.
1) The crowd doesn't think 'whoa how many BPMS are his/her feet going' or 'Whoa is he/she playing 6/8 over 3/2 and 3/4. .
2) The crowd is thinking 'Whoa this band ROCKS' or 'WHOA this band SUCKS'.
3) If I went out on the street and said Travis barker sucks people would get angry, but if I went to those same people and said Virgil Donati sucks or El negro sucks they would say 'Who is that'?
Dave Weckl is a drummer's drummer. In other words, his phrasing and technique can only be understood and appreciated by others who are musicians or drum also. Also, he's huge in European and Asian countries; but Americans are too busy drooling over 4/4 rock beats and uninspired death metal double bass.
I agree. Dave is an "international" drummer. Without question, a well-orchestrated and trained dummer. In this particular piece, his love of the "Latin Beat" comes to the fore. Bravo Dave!
Death metal is appreciated everywhere, what's your point? Jazz was pioneered by African Americans and had mostly European influences. Try a wikipedia search on it.
