I came here from FHB: finehomebuildingDOTCOM/item/8876/get-hip-to-those-tricky-roof-angles
The diagrams and photos in that article are the only way I was able to comprehend this. Thanks for the great trick. PS viewers: it works for that tricky cut at the corner frieze block on a hip roof.
@raremountainbear Its really not complicated. If you can't see it, just move on. Try coming back later and trying again. If you could visualize the block of wood as a portion cut out of a scale model, perhaps that would help. But I admit, some people just can't see it.
I'm not having any trouble understanding your concept. The jig itself is what I think confuses people visually. I'm just not seeing how this is any more helpful than a square. Sorry.
@raremountainbear Hahaha. It's not even supposed to be an improvement over a square. It's a jig for finding all the compound angles in a hip roof quickly and accurately, and modeling them in 3D. Don't let the screen door hit 'ya on the way out! =)
Yet I have 'cut & pitched' quite a few roofs here in the UK. Seemed too abstract for my mind Not to put you down Mr Abstract, I'm convinced you understand it, but my brain couldnt cope with the method... so I bow down before you LOL.

I'm sorry to say that I'm having a hard time imagining that jig as a portion of the house.

@raremountainbear Like I say...Move on. Some people can grasp it, and some can't.

Like I said, I can grasp it, it just isn't an improvement over a square. Learn to accept criticism, and you'll get a bit further.
