  • Michael Moore... lolz

  • I was there! It was so great!

  • DON'T MOUM ORGANIZE!! FFS!!

  • @iamther ...educate yrself. tea party is abt union busting. ever hear of wisconsin?

  • go for woodstock version

  • Do you imagine any of those Tea Party retards has a clue who Joe Hill was. Joan keeps the spirit of Woody Guthrie alive, and democracy ticking. And made Dylan's songs listenable, backed by the Nashville cats who loved her.

  • @TheGeofflane I am a "tea party retard" . The tea party is about freedom from government, as I believe Joan was. Don't be so hateful.

  • @TheGeofflane Tea party retards? Nice one. Shows your maturity level in an adult world.

  • @KeltHighland I must apologize - these remarks were not meant for you, but somehow, I must have clicked on the wrong name. Again, I apologize...

  • Screw you brainwashed

idiots that add to the decline of America! long live compassion!!!!!!!

  • I dreamed I saw Joe Biden last night....OMG! It was a nightmare!! LOL

  • Micheal Moore? What an asshole!

  • Joan, you have a great voice, SHUT UP AND SING!

  • Michael Moore makes people think. No different than other prominent rebel rousers on both sides of the situation. We need him.

  • I grew up in the 60's and there were more of us who disagreed with all those hippies than there were people burning buildings and smoking dope. She should just sing and not spout off and show how ignorant she is about politics. She actually thinks Michael Moore has sense and is not an idiot. He cried about capitalism but does he give all that bad money away to charities that he supposedly supports? NO

  • @KeltHighland What a miserable thing to say. Joan Baez is a great American and she has as much right to "spout off" her views as any other citizen. And Micheal Moore is a real American hero. And hippies smoked a lot of dope in the 60's God Bless 'em, but I don't recall them "burning buildings." You hateful conservatives are all the same. Dead enemies of the working man and woman, enemies of freedom of speech--and in the end--you always have to exaggerate and smear and lie.

  • @KeltHighland Ahhh... Boomers, so blinkered, and so dim. They all wax nostalgic for the good ol' days when they were either rabble rousing rebels, independent minded and courageous, or staunch protectors of the republic's status quo. While the truth is, a tiny minority actually fought for this country (the spirit of Lexington and Concord), and a slightly larger minority fought the authorities on the streets of America (the spirit of the Boston Massacre).

  • @KeltHighland And that's where they remain to this day - like a plague of locusts sent to devour the republic, and the rest of the planet as well...

  • @KeltHighland The much larger groups were those that remained safely ensconced in their parents basements, wearing the requisite "counter-culture" fashion accessories and doing bong hits, or upstairs cleanc-shaven and crew-cutted, ranting at Walter Cronkite from the safety of their recliners. Of course, the largest boomer demographic of all, were those who made no pretense of civic responsibility at all, as they were too busy being "happy consumers."

  • Joe Hill is in Wisconsin tonight.

    ~

  • She left out some of the lirycs

Listen to Paul Robeson he has all the lyrics. I do not know why she always left some out

  • Joan Baez ia a GODDESS, if only we will all take her lifes work as more of our own.

    Thanks for uploading.

  • Horrible, like in Woodstock !!!!!

  • She´s a milf! Even by Swedish standards!!

  • Arrest Don Blankenship CEO of Massey Mines! Bernie Madoff, a thief, is in prison for ripping off investors. Don Blankenship is a murderer; he needs to be held accountable for his crimes!

  • It was a free concert in DC at an anti-war protest, so all the artists were obviously discussing their anti-war views. We went to hear the music and take photos.

  • If it was a free anti-war concert then the entertainer are expected to give their views. Fighting a War for Peace is like Screwing for Chastity . HAIR.

  • @AstralPlane1951 Excuse me but wasn't WWII fought so that we could live in peace from Imperialist Japan and Nazi Germany? Or maybe you thing we shouldn't have defended ourselves just sat on our hands while they closed in on us?

  • @AstralPlane1951 You mean if she had sung "Horst Wessel" you would have listened and enjoyed the words. How sad..... and frightening!

  • Like her music, hate her politics. She is the one that's in denial. Its a fact that every intelligence agency in the world was unanimous that there were WMDs in Iraq and that unriched uranium was found south of bagdad. For her to put Michael Moore on a pedistal with gold star mothers is disgusting. Its the gold star mother's and their sons/daughters that enable her to open that mouth and spew the ingnorant horse crap that comes out of it. The gold star mothers I know would be disgusted with her

  • you're in denial.

  • You simply cannot separate music or any kind of art from politics. Nobody but an idiot and the corporate media said there were WMDs in Iraq. And half of those did not believe it.

  • @greeksteel "Every intelligence agency............blah, blah." No - not true. Don't you know that one of our top civil servants killed himself because he knew that was not true - and it was clear that the Americans were bullying the UK into an illegal war....? Just stop it - you are NOT the cops of the world, we are NOT kow-towing to you- and by the way, when you've finished off the language, can we have it back, if you please? 'unriched' indeed...........................

  • Maybe you need to read up on your facts and i don't mean the crap that is offered in the political media. Try reading: Disinformation : 22 Media Myths That Undermine the War on Terror by Richard Miniter. and then tell me what you think instead of being a neanderthal and empty-headedly blathering the words "not true." The truth is that you don't have a clue. Answer me once you've been informed of the facts.

  • @greeksteel

Yes, I know of Miniter's work - he is prolific. However, much as I admire journalists when they're good, I have to agree with Tony Benn - one journo interviewing another about what a third journo said or wrote is not exactly how the democratic process should work.

Facts - yep, indeed; if you've sat through the Chilcott inquiry and the Hutton inquiry - paying particular attention to the evidence of Carne Ross & other senior diplomats, you'd have plenty of facts - too many, perhaps?

  • @greeksteel

What "War On Terror" ? The former Director of Studies at the U.S. Army War College, Dr, Sabrosky, has publicly stated that the Israeli Mossad and the CIA planned and executed the attacks of 911.

Inside Job, all the way - and a Congress of Fainting Goats to go along with it - not to mention a brain dead and cowardly American public.

  • i was there

  • Ahh, Swedish Joe

  • our freedoms to be ourselves

  • because they love and believe in our great nation flaws and all, there is a reason capluapan tlaxcala, mexico has people who want to come here and all of the russian costal town i went to were filled with people wanting to be part of all this, it may not be perfect but it is alot better than most

  • learn to appreciate a blind love michael moore, one based on the ideals that not one person is perfect and even more so no-one should have any right to point out that someone isn't as good

  • allow me to add, i love the idea behind a worker nation and am in no way a right wing ass, but i love my america and to listen to someone who disregard the blood lost by people who want for nothing more than to come to this great nation of equals and inequals all here to provide everything we can for our loved ones in peace, whether or not they are an american soldier or an immigrant killed for trying to leave there own country for ours,

  • baez is amazing

she is not a communist. THats a political ideology

She is a socialist which is a economic policy

  • What a sweet voice of Miss Joan Baez. We can consider ourselves privileged to hear her songs.

  • Joe did not write this - this is a cover and old union standard. It started off as a poem and was turned into a song and popularized by Earl Robinson. Joan is simply keeping the memory of a martyred musician, a kindred spirit to her to be sure, alive.

  • @comradewho I think you mean Paul Robeson

  • Who wrote these lyrics - Baez?

  • yea

  • At nearly 70 ,Joan Baez is still at it singing for peace and justice! She marched with Dr.Martin Luther King in Selma ,Alabama when she was little more than a girl back in '63, and when doing so in" Sweet Home Alabama "COULD prove dangerous to your health! She DEFINITELY does not need the money or publicity,Ms. Baez continues to sing for these causes because she is one of the few humans in the music biz who really gives a damn .Que Dios te bendica por siempre,SENORA Baez!

  • AMEN!

  • vastedda99,

a brave thing if she did it march against those evil racists

  • ive loved joan since 1962 she's still the best female singer x

  • Love this song. Joe Hill was from my home town of Gävle in Sweden. His real name was Joel Hägglund and was killed by the cupper bosses. He will live for ever.

  • i love this lady xxx

  • Joan Baez recorded this YEARS ago, and i thought her version was nice. I used to play it on guitar and sing it all the time. I liked young Joan better. She really fit the role - right on the cusp of the protesting of that time. Her and Dylan. And others before. I have two lovely oil paintings of her, taken from album covers, painted by my talented artist brother, so i see her every morning. :) He painted them partly cuz i liked her lots. She was one of my first 'music teachers'. Thanks.

  • Nice update of "The Ballad of Joe Hill" -- bless her heart!

  • goood :D

  • long live IWW.

  • I'm not a commie, I'm an anarchist and a unionist. Like Joe Hill.

  • I'm with you bro. UNION YES

  • @MarxBakuninMe Sweet. Same here!

  • @MarxBakuninMe because communists are stupid, right ? :D

  • @MarxBakuninMe At least you're nor a communist... God forbid...

  • @MarxBakuninMe I'm a Unionist, but not quite an anarchist... yet... When I look at what we're getting from a certain "Democrat"... Ahhh well, He's still better than the last one - Bill Clinto was a real piece of shite...

"Last night, President Roosevelt explained banking so that everyone could understand, even the bankers." -Will Rogers-

"... I welcome their hatred!" -Franklin Delano Roosevelt-

  • Have to agree "hill16 commando" even though as a royal (Cmon MEATH) it kills me, Joan cant touch the legend that is LUKE

  • You've never really understood her then. Michael Moore may be crazy, but he's a rebel and an independent thinker who doesn't toe the line. That's the connection with Baez.

Moore has never touted any crazy idea- he simply asks questions.

  • What the fuck do you know about Joe Hill? The man was an innocent martyr who fought for workers's right. If it weren't for men like him we'd still be working 16 hours a day in sweatshops, dickhead.

  • Haha:) Svensk eller hur?

  • Dear Joan,

you have a great voice. Your music inspired me for many many years.

My name is Michael Engel. I´m also on You Tube.

I live in Bielefeld (germany). You ´ve played a great concert there in 2008.

    God bless you

    Michael

  • Forget this ...check out the Luke Kelly version....... much better

  • Joan Baez strikes again! jumping on the Unions bandwagon after 40 years.

  • music is to be listend to not argued about!

  • As Phil Ochs, Miss Joan Baez speak a lot during its fantastics concerts, ah if only Mister Dylan do the same ...

  • When the guy's hand goes in the air near the beginning, because of the angle I thought it was a clenched fist salute. Then I realised he was just taking a picture!

  • Actually there are two songs. This one is really "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Last Night" which Joan Baez recorded in the late 1950's. The other song is called "The Balad of Joe Hill" which was recorded by Phil Ochs in the 1960's but written much earlier.

  • I never heard this version before, she does very well, can tell she has lots of feeling on the subject.

  • Merveilleuse chanteuse mais le son est mauvais. Dommage !

  • Phils version is not only older, but better.

  • actually, you are wrong. Joan Baez did her first version of this song before phil ochs

  • Actually you are wrong. The first version of this song was done by Earl Robinson in 1936. And the lyrics were first written as a poem by Alfred Hayes in 1930 I think it was.

Amazing piece of work - Joanie does it proud.

  • Ahh sorry, I misread, you said she did her first version etc.

Anyways, just incase you didn't know the history of this song, you do now : ).

  • Love Baez, still. Some things never change. Thank God for people like her!

  • AH! QUE SAUDADe!!!!!!

    KK

  • Joe Hill, (Joel Emmanuel Hägglund), born 7 oktober 1879 in Gävle, Sweden.

The house where he lived as a child in the old part of Gävle is now museum. I live just a few blocks from there.

  • sadly, what people like joe fought for, i.e workers rights, will also be consigned to museums, relics of the past

  • we meet again here, LOL

I hope there will always be someone to stand up for workers rights!

  • Heja Brynäs!

  • jamie4252-Thank you for your correction Myria83! Bravi instead! By the way, I would like to hear Joan on YouTube singing, "Don't Think Twice, it's Alright." Would anybody else like that?

  • Great version. 2nd only to Luke Kelly singing this song.

  • like the dubiners better

  • roseberry26-I have always been taken with Joan Baez-her beautiful voice, social concerns, and activism. I wish there were more people protesting the current war. So many people are afraid of the government. Protest somehow! Great work and bravo for all those doing SOMETHING.

  • That "bravo" is everywhere... Have you heard it at the end of an opera? Bravo means "good" in Italian, but it is only male/singular. In this case you should say "bravi" (plural) :-)

  • roseberry26

  • wigan salutes you joan and joe xxx

  • I've always liked Joan Baez. I think her voice is still great. As for Bob Dylan....well, IMO he sounds like a bunch of caterwauling cats in a 55 gallon barrel. Great songwriter but can't sing worth a crap.

  • Go IWW! Thanks Joan Baez, your voice has always been beautiful.

  • Could anyone tell me where I can find the video clip from the song Joe Hill?

    THANKS

  • wow

  • (As a live long fan), I like her "new" voice much, much better, because it made her sound more real, sadder, not like the "madonna from outer space" as in the 60s.

There's a version of "Carrickfergus" on her last live album (not on Youtube, sorry), I think it's the best song she ever recorded.

She sounds like Dylan Thomas on death row, in the Hudson street, when he lifted his last drink - unbelievable.

  • yes ofcourse her voice has declined over the yerars, it is natural. You should compare listen to old bob dylan compared to nowadays. Not that he was that great to begin with.

  • true joan's voice has changed over the years

the best version of this song by luke kelly-check it out on YouTube and see if you agree

  • mike gravel fundraising week april 15th to 22nd, tax day to earth day. it culminates on a mass donation day on april 22nd

  • She's older?!!! She's a Guthrie from Edinburgh?!!! Some girl tho..

  • I remember the singing as much much better. Don't know whats happened, her voice is shaking and off-tune? Anybody, please comment?

  • This girl is 67 listen to her speak at the begining she sounds a little croaky if you are comparing to 1969 woodstock 40 years ago.plus live performances should always be different enjoy and appreciate

  • Joan Baez is great, but IMHO, Janet Bates (who has a voice similar to Joan's) does a much better version of Joe Hill, and Janet's husband, Ken, starts off the song with Joe Hill's Final Will. It is truly impressive.

  • Stop with your f.. thinking in black&white there's billions of right ways to live and let live. That's one of the things the lady above tries to say us in a lot of her songs.

  • she's amazing i love her

  • Simple truth... anyone who has issue with Joan is a fascist nazi scumbag... period!!!

  • Shadow, It comes in from the left but only folly would deny it comes from the right too. Why should we, put up with the stupidities of the Liberal/Labor, Republican/Democrat, Tory/Socialist dichotomies, whose efforts are to defeat each other, not to assist all people? Vote them all out.

  • Excuse my ignorance, but who is Shlickelgruger?

  • Shlickelgruber was the noisy little paper hanger, in the brown shirt, Adolf Hitler.

  • Read some books and understand what "communism" might be. Open your eyes and your mind.

  • Look again this was only my opion. If I ofended you, or anyone else out the then I'm truly sorry. Larry.

  • Even though she's a Commie Bitch I do love her music

  • Commie? You are an IDIOT!!!

  • Joshua, I did,nt post this comment to start an Argument, this is only my Opion. All I said was she had a great voice, and a Comunist. If this ofended you the you must be a Communist Asshold Also. I'm not such an idiot to know when a Person attacks another for his or hers opion then the person who starts the argument is the Idiot. So think about it who really is the Idiot?

  • Of course you posted it to start an argument, why else would you have been so childish in your mocking assertion? Your original statement is right there... you called her a "commie bitch," and people who are ignorant of the differences between a liberal and a commie are idiots... conservatively, patently and intentionally so. Are you really trying to downplay your immature rhetoric? Won't work.

  • Baez was a major Commie opponent if you look up your history. Ronnie RayGun even praised Baez's attack of North Viet Nam(and rounded up many powerful liberals to sign her full page add like Chavez, Coretta King, Norman Lear etc) She is credited for aiding in the fall of Commies in Russia, Poland and Czech.

  • trackonly, funny, probably right. Also, she sounds like an "old" woman singing now, she needs to retire her voice. This is from another "old" woman who grew up with her and always loved her voice and most of her songs.

  • Joe Hill will be remember this November 19, 2007 as the Port of Aztlan (Los Angeles/Long Beach) will be shut down by Joe Hill's union, the IWW.

  • Joel Hägglund, han var från Gävle han då..

  • A classic! Joe Hill was a Swede =)

  • amen!

  • You might be confusing Joan Baez with your hero, Joan Rivers.

  • Joe Hill was murdered by the State of Utah for organizing working folk.

  • So What's your Point?

  • He was wrongfully accused for a murder that he did not commit! not organizing workers!

  • That's right. And he was wrongfully accused of murder because he was organizing workers. That's my point.

  • Joan Baez is phenomenal. Joe Hill was a rarity- a real hero. For a recent and fierce tribute to Hill and unions check out Tom Morello's Union Song.

  • go brooklynblowback 4 paul robeson

  • Is there a monument somewhere ?

Last time I heard this I was a wet floor-rag thinking about the miners that the english police killed under thatcher

  • this takes me back to 1989, such a special time thankyou

  • I really love this song.. Shes the best.. I used to sing it...

  • check out luke kelly's version of this.

  • I heard it, I really liked it too! Thanks!

  • in memory of John 'Hill' :

    Joel Emmanuel Hägglund,

    born October 7, 1879, Sweden;

    died a martyr on November 19, 1915.

    Joe 'Hill'

    the union organizer...

    he was killed

fighting for workers rights most of them immigrants from all over,

    many Irish and Italian.

    Died a martyr.

  • I love Joan Baez!! Keep on!

  • Do you guys arguing even know the definition fo capitalism? Ever heard of free market economy? If you are going to argue about politics get your definitions straight. America is not completely capitolist. If it were we would have equal competetion between businesses, which we do not. Our economy is mostly monopolized by a few big corparations. America is more like an oligarchy, especially if you imply our gov is controlled by big bussiness.

  • To say there is no alternative to capitalism is kinda bs too. True Capitalism is a constant fight between competing bussinesses and eventually someone wins the game, hence monopolies. Capitalism cannot survive without the gov, but that intervention contridicts the definition of capitalism.

  • As I see it in a true capitalist society it woulb be too chaotic for the small businesses to start a war. Greedy/crazy charisimatic leaders start war. They use nationalism and religion as their tools to mobilize people. Unification wins war, but people usually have to be either really fucked up in the head and/or brainwashed to condone mass killing.

  • In my opinion blind religion and nationalism are Americas problems, not capitalism. We are not moving toward being more capitalistic we are moving toward being a theocracy.

  • Wow, you have no clue what was going on in the US at the time!!

  • I largely agree, but would add that what is commonly confused with capitalism could also be described as "social darwinism" and "laissez faire". Capitalism is a system where you and I compete on an even playing field to see who meets the needs of the customers better. With laissez-faire, the "insiders" manipulate things, BECAUSE THEY CAN, because there are no checks on abuse.

  • Quite right mate - director of chrysler won the best 'manager' prize one year mainly thru' getting subsidies from the state

  • Maybe war is a part of human nature (though I seriously doubt that), but that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for equality and fairness. Lets have a little freakin consideration.

Russia fell due to internal corruption, yes, but the main reason it declined was due to external pressure- for socialism to succeed we'd need it to be global institution.

  • Back to the video......thank God for our modern day heroes like Joan Baez, Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore. This song reminds us to unite and work for a better world and not to give up hope. If we unite and fight the fair fight.........results will eventually come. To not believe that is to give up all hope......and hope is what the world needs most these days. Thanks Joan for the reminder and inspiration and for turning up at every possible demonstration to remind us all over again.

  • hehe... thanks gjpdj... "back to the video"... Much needed... :)

  • I love this song!
