  • and if it was seized u wouldnt be able to spin the fly wheel

  • @postiebike77

it had siezed at one point. When I took it apart the piston and cylinder were scored worse than I've ever seen before.

  • and i disagree walkingfreak it will blow a head gasket b4 seizing, they arent performance motors

  • your engine isnt seized its just your fly wheel rubbing on coil

  • @postiebike77 No, it's not. trust me, I'm not stupid

  • u mean the piston seized and it threw the rod?

  • I just picked up an Ariens, my question is, do these normally come with Briggs or Tecumseh as standard engines? Yours has a Tecumseh, mine came with a Briggs.

  • @MultiKhaz they come with Tecumseh usually 8hp mine came with a 7hp pressure lube check it out

  • engines wont ever seize they will probably throw a connecting rod before seizing at least in my experiance

  • @walkingfreak not if you delete the engine's only source of cooling. And i've seen tons of motors heat seize

  • Save that 8hp tecumseh! I have that same engine as a replacement on my 1968 Ariens mower.

  • I was wondering if this mower has spacers between the head and seat support, and nuts or bolts to tie the two together? My Ariens with the 8hp Briggs has them. Seems like they wanted extra support for the engine besides the mount bolts. Your 8hp Briggs is perfect for that rider if you decide not to fix the Tecumseh. You pull the Tecumseh apart yet? Just curious.

  • i love my briggs,i had a tecumseh it had a broken fly wheel key so when i pulled the cord....... lets just say i was cursing all day. ive never had a problem with my briggs. besides tecumseh engines are cheap and they are known to throw rods.

  • Someone already mentioned Tecumsehs are good engines. They are. They used a piston style oil pump to lubricate the engine versus splash style in other engines. Chances are that the original owner did not take care of this equipment. No offense, but this is the most common problem with these small engines. When I got my used Ariens, it looked like the owner never changed the oil and never cleaned the air filter.

  • totally agree with you. every machine/make has the potential to be a long lasting machine.

  • same thing happened to my ariens that front assembly leaks a ton of oil im constantly adding oil to it. im actually changing the standard 8hp for a 12hp today

  • techumseh engines piston rings are known for cracking, it might be that, but yea go with briggs or kohler, all my tractors use kohlers and the only one that had a techumseh, the piston rings cracked and sounded just like that, of course i swaped it for a kohler, now the things got lots of torque, the reason kohler is diferent than any other small engines is that kohlers have alot more torque and compression wile briggs & stratton + techumseh only get a quarter of compression due to the camshaft

  • dude its sad that people dont take care of their stuff, like that

  • lol@ the nastiest shit I ever seen hahaha

  • :D but really, I don't know what the fuck was in there. it was like gell

  • how old are you?

  • 19 why?

  • to bad, techumsehs are good engines

  • it is not seas it just overheated

  • no shit

  • its saveable home it and clean the rings with 2000 sand paper

  • i have the same mower and i put a honda g200 on it with a one to 50 gear ratio. no deck just for me to book it up and down on the road

  • i want that engine

  • what, the blown one?

  • Had one just like this, with the Tecumseh. It finally died a slow and painful death. I bought another ariens, with a briggs, but I wish I would have gone with snapper.

  • sounds liek a busted rod. common in tecumsehs. weakest part of the engine imo.

  • no, it's the rings scraping on the cylinder. the rod is fine

  • I agree, that engine is most deffinetly fucked lol

  • that engine is deffinatley fucked lol wot ae you going to do with it?

  • keep it. it's fucked in every posible way lol

  • That briggs will last longer than that shitty ass Tecumseh.

  • that intake for the carb looks really restrictive. how wide is it?

  • same width as the 8 horse briggs. you could switch carbs if you really wanted to

  • btw its a tecumpshe v220

  • tvm220

  • They are great mowers, best of luck fixing it with what you decide to use for an engine!

  • hey i got the same mower with that same toms air cooled engine sticker i assume you live near ottawa?? i wanna get rid of some mower and engins do you want them??

  • I live in quebec, 20 minutes away from ottawa. and really? hoe much for what?

  • offer me somthing theres 5 mowers pritty mutch there 30 motors

  • but is it one that goes on this specific mower?

  • I have a briggs like that- i ran it for 20 mins w/o any oil- i used PB blaster to loosen it- it's on my wizard at the moment- still runs. Ill get a video sometime of it-

I got a 16HP teccy with oil pressure/oil filter - once i get it going im gonna thrash the crap outta it.

  • ya, but did you compress mud in all the cooling fins too?

  • No, i had just finished painting the motor, i put it on the tractor, the oil drain tube interfered with the steering link- so i drained the oil, intending to change out the tube BEFORE starting it ( was getting late). A week goes by, i forget about changing the tube- has NO oil in it- it fires easily- i rev it alot for like 20 mins. As i notice the loose oil cap- i realized i mightve killed a perfectly good 11hp motor. I did get it running tho eventually w/o tearing it open.

  • That old craftsman y junked was worth alot more then that ariens- i dont like teccy motors- gimme a briggs anyday...

  • the old siers lawn tractor was not worth making it run again. needed all new belts, wiring chewed by mice, every square inch was covered in rust, one of the front tires had a gaping whole in it, and the list goes on. I'm using the parts to some day make a go kart. tecumseh motors are fine. I would have liked to see the briggs that could have stood up to over heating AND low oil. this is the good kind of tecumseh with the oil pump system, cast iron valve and cylinder sleeves
