Baby kittens knead their mother's stomach when they want milk (to stimulate the milk flow at the nipple), so when they do it to other animals/humans, they are expressing a feeling of comfort and peace that they associate with their mother. Cats knead naturally to soften what they're going to sleep on.

They're not really massaging, they're just checking the area to make sure it's secure. My cats do it to me all the time. And if it's not on me, it's right beside me on the bed. They're looking for the most comfortable spot to lie in.
