And hey, if you are not performing for others just now, it is always a treat just to do it for yourself.

  • @march149 yeah i use to perform hulla in the philippines.. it's just... don't you know that wonderful feeling everytime you dance? or everytime you here the music fill the room and you start dancing.. or that feeling when everyone watches you as soon you start to dance. i just love hulla.. and there aren't any oppurtunities to dance hulla in europe :( i just miss those feelings..

but yes :-)) i could do that. thanks!!!

  • gives me chicken skin every time (:

  • 12 people are complete idiots to dislike this...

  • Wow, more than a million viewers....an amazing feat, like your dancing. Congratulations.

  • I was very suprised... This is Japanese song!! The Japanese group, 'Begin' made this song!!!

  • @gomapanda Yes, Nada Sou Sou! The Hawaiian arranger did not give the credit to BEGIN, the Okinawan young Folksong combo. But, Begin came to hawaii and probably complained. What happened I don't know.

  • I like Hawaiian Music & Love HAWAII. Japanese(OKINAWA) song「NADA SOSO」is

    good song!

  • This halau is the epitome of group hula, and what makes them a step above the rest if their abiilty to change formations while dancing. I love the 2004 video response best, they change so much formation, always moving, and the overhead shots, all synced. It's one thing to teach the hula to where everyone is doing the same thing at the same time. It's another thing to keep synced while moving around. Watch the 2011 Merrie Monarch Auana, there are so many changes, and when they end it, Wow!

  • That was beautiful, and I love this Hawaiian version of Nada SouSou XD

  • Performance was excellent...dancers are syncd to the music...purely winners.

  • hey that's a japanese song..the 2nd/3rd song before aloha e

  • I don't understand the words but I sure feel them... very beautiful melody.

  • How can no one not love this. It is so beautiful and gracefull and they are all in syinc. Amazing and breathtaking.

  • So magical.. dancing to me isnt much, but this hula dancing... its like the old magiks to ward away evil and becon the seasons growth... beautiful and the perfect way to express the pureness of the music.

  • What is name of first song?

Name of last song is Ka Nohona Pili Kai by Kealii Reichel.

  • The first song is Mele 'Ohana by Keali'i Reichel

  • hi this song is hawaian? or tahitian?

  • Haha. Hawaiian man. None of these songs is tahitian. This is a hawaiian dance festival called the Merie Monarch Festival. Not just dance but hawaiian culture of course but this is is obviously the dance ulture of it. Tahitian do a faster hip shaking kind of dance. Hawaiians so this which is slower and has more elegance.

  • k mujerez tan pro tan bonitazz

  • I love this video of the 2 songs together. Mahalo nui loa for doing this.

    Aloha,

    Josie "Kealoha" Valdez Ramirez

  • Wow...so beautiful. They're like a beckoning ocean.

  • Crazy amazing to watch. Not just the dance individually, but all of them doing it perfectly together. Wish I could have seen that in person!

  • @miamidiver7 This is from an annual hula competition, the Merrie Monarch Festival. It brings together some of the top halau together to compete, and this has always been my favorite halau. Their precision, professionalism, and hard work can be seen. The competition this year will be the last week of April, the week after Easter Sunday. You may be able to watch it streamed from the internet. You should also watch the video response posted above, watch their precision as they change formations.

  • @ kevin@natemad .. hey bradah you like come here to da islands say dat talk to me brah I give you good lickens brah no talk stupid talk about hawaii come here say lolo shit you get bussUP BRADAH. Oe'ahhuiep'i stupid ass popolo. I like buss you up give you lickens. Hawaiian style bradah dats my sistah you punk.

  • I remember watching the merrie monarch about 5 or 6 years ago, and just watching how all the dancers moved as one... I wanted to dance hula again just by watching the unity happen right before me eyes :')

  • what the music those guys singing?

  • @Xguy890 At the very beginning you will see the names of the song, and the announcers describe what the main song is about. They enter to the song Mele 'Ohana (family song). When they form into 4 lines, the dance to the main song Ka Nohona Pili Kai. When they stand up to exit, they dance to the song Mele a ka Pu'uwai (song of the heart). All 3 songs are from the artist Keali'i Reichel from his albums.

  • @Xguy890 It's not those guys, but one---Keali'i Reichel and he is singing 3 songs of which he has recordings of. A fanatastic person and a treasure to the Islands of Hawaii. To learn more, do a search. I think you will find much very interesting.

  • I feel so good while I am watching something hawaiian, Hawaii are the best islands ever <3

  • CAN SOMEONE OUT THERE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS QUESTION??? I grew up learning the hawaiian hula. However, we were taught to open and close the fingers pertaining to the petals of the lotus flower opening and closing. Now, watching all the dances on you tube, I see all the dancers keeping there fingers together. Has the dance gone back to it's original style as when the white settlers were there?

  • @mangahoui the style has just changed, most likely due to competitions like this. it is easier to get the hands in sync with a more subdued wave than the "sifting sand" style our beloved tutus do.

  • @bluejeanbop hi there. thanks heaps for this information. take care.

  • beautiful ! cordination nice :D

  • i danced for this halau... but them i stopped dancing hula kuz im playing sports.... i miss it so much:(

  • @ TheMultiDudes: Only if you can find copies of The Arthur Godfrey Show, doubtful since that was in the 50's, although it's possible. Don't know if they recorded that show. I think I Love Lucy was one of the few shows that were recorded back then. Good Luck!

  • hulla is so wonderful. peaceful and graceful

  • its so nice... =)

  • Goodness! Even the sheer movement of their skirts are synchronized so perfectly. Pure beauty... Made me cry, too...

  • Pure beauty! Their beauty is ENDLESS! Btw, a polynesian man once told me that the women use coconut oil to make their hair silky and healthy. Might be worth a try ;D I wouldnt be surprised if that's why their hair get so incredibly long.

    Mahalo!

  • @NorwEllen or cocount milk :)

  • @NorwEllen or you can try coconut milk. my great grandmother uses it and her hair is very long and shiny :)

  • my all time favorite performance of all the years at Merrie Monarch. The singing and dancing are perfect!

  • The rythem and movement made me cry!

  • i love hula.but icna dance

  • スゴイ!競技会なのに生演奏だ!

  • Ka'i (entrance) Song: Mele Ohana Ho'i (exit) Song: Mele a ka Pu'uwai (3rd verse)

I lift my voice up to my family, whose love I wear upon my chest, this is my gift of love for you, from the land that has nurtured me, it remains here in my heart, cared forever by God, here is my love for all of you

    Song: Ka Nohona Pili Kai:

1)The spray of the sea comes as a breath, rustling the leaves of the ti plants, Like a perfumed whisper scenting the air, ever calling to me

  • Chorus: Beloved, Beloved indeed, Beloved is the sweet remembrance, Beautiful, beautiful indeed, beauty embodies that seaside home

2)The mind wanders freely in the dark of night, wakeful from the spirit-like voice of the sea, Precious images drift through my thoughts, always bringing a sense of peace

  • 3)The shade of the coconut grove is like family to me, embracing me like the morning glory,Those who are gone become a thing of beauty, an everlasting adornment to hold dear

    Chorus

4)The spray of the sea recounts the story, that perfumed murmur of the deep of night,The pathway lies before us that we shall tread, beckoning us ever forward

    Chorus

    Ho'i (exit)

Express the deep affection, for the pulsing emotions in the heart

Missing the beauty that you are, take heed, come back, return to us

  • That's Keali'i Reichel singing! Love his voice. I never know what the words mean, but the feeling is enough for me!

  • i abosolutley love this song!!!!

  • this is lovely. Thanks for sharing. Miss my days in Hawaii and Hula classes. Is that Kealii Rachel singing?

  • Awww, so beautiful!!! I love this video... Thank you for posting!

Especially I like Ka Nohona Pili Kai, Japanese title Nada-sousou 涙そうそう!!♥

  • I LOVE MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL!

  • This is very pretty!

  • There is something different being Hawaiian at heart and being native hawaiian. As much as I enjoy watching other halau from other countries, you can sense something missing. A lot of girls in these halau aren't Hawaiian, probably none pure Hawaiian, but that's what its evolved into, everyone is mixed ethnicities. But you can see the difference between a Hawaiian kumu hula and one not. Some halau seem to be going through the motions, whereas this one you feel the emotion. Big difference.

  • @hankakah i agree i have all the feeling in the world and the passion im not pure Hawaiian im 5/8 but i wish i looked more like it but im proud of all my backgrounds

  • @hankakah yes but just because they are not pure hawaiian doesnt mean they cant be apart of that family. hula should be shared by everyone that respects hawaiian culture and history. right? you have a point though.

  • @allielj5 ah found it, look up Poliahu on Youtube, one posted by ayepprihl. I mean the girls are doing what they are taught, but if they don't know the meaning of what they are dancing about, it doesn't mean anything, movements don't fit the song. They dance to Poliahu, sung by Theresa Bright.

  • Hawaii has so much tradition and culture than the 49 other states combined!

  • I wonder what percentage of the ladies in this video are truely hawaiians....its sad to see many cultures fade away over time. and whos to blame?? well, i guess the better question is WHATs to blame

  • @arab3515 All those ladies are Hawaiians...you take up the Hawiian culture and traditions because of your love for it...that makes you a Hawaiian at heart.

  • @smaj808usmc26 well okay its one thing to be hawaiian at hear but thats completely different from being hawaiian by BLOOD.

Its the same way in many different cultures and people, the natives tend to fade away and then everybody tends to be that specific people "at heart."

  • @arab3515 I still don't get your point. Who really care's rather a "truely hawaiian" danced in this video. The hula is performed by dancers all over the world, and every year at this event, halaus come from Japan and Mexico and I can guarantee you that they aren't Hawaiians.

  • @smaj808usmc26 what is there not to get about what i said. i guess i just gotta tell you strait up. sure its fine to honor culture n all, but when you look at the truth behind the hula in reality THERE IS LITTLE TO NO JUSTICE FOR THE NATIVE HAWAIIANS LET ALONE ALL NATIVES IN GENERAL. THE SAME STORY GOES FOR ALL NATIVES

  • @arab3515 l'm a Native Hawaiian, dude and my sister speaks fluent Hawaiian and taught the hula (kumu)...'nuff said. As for "making the hula dance illegal in the past," it was the missionaries that did that, not the Hawaiians. Get up to date and study Hawaiian history.

  • @smaj808usmc26 I REALLY DONT UNDERSTAND WHY UR GETTING OFFENDED....listen to what im sayin, yes, the missionaries are the reason why the hula was made illegal, but for what reason or excuse did they use to have it banned?? RELIGION.......this is the mental slavery that needs to be broken.

as far as native hawaiians, like i said, its one thing to be native in heart rather than being native by blood. thats two different people. sorry but thats truth. i thought u would kno tht being native urself

  • @arab3515 I know what is to blame for cultures fading away... your mentality.

  • @blackanime2 yes, to an extent our mentality is to blame, but then ask yourself, what is it that makes our mind corrupt??

for example what was the excuse for making the hula dance illegal in the past??

  • precioso a mas no poder

  • how pretty(:

  • if they mess up they get beaten with a pu'ili stick

  • @dorkysmile390 no they dont lol its just takes alot of dedication and pride in hula and the hawaiian culture

    aloha

  • @sosexcii696 dude....i hula......i know a kumu who does that to her dancers

  • @dorkysmile390 dammm lol that is crazy and a little to much and yess i hula to and going to japan to hula also but yea that is crazy i was telling my kumu and he just shook his head but yea aloha my hula bro

    clyde

  • @dorkysmile390 hey, whatever gets the job done, lol........these girls are simply beautiful

  • this is so beautiful and its so magnificent movement swaying to and fro thats what you say lovely hawaian dancer jus't like their ancestors in their time, just about our cook island dancing thats so lovely, that is so natural to them that is how they dance,so beautiful

  • I love this video and I 100 % agree to a comment of intoxicating rendition. It is mesmorizingly beutiful girls and perfectly snchronized dancing, and very cosy sounding music, every thing is so perfect. I see my dream girl is in the center of front row. Just unbliebably beutiful girl and she is projecting beutiful human woman. No other team came even close. I appreciated so much that inspire me so much.

  • Deepest Love, rendition, kindness to the beauty of this culture Magnifico !

  • Reminds me of where I'm growing up still! I LOVE HAWAI'I

  • I'm supposed to be a 'ruffty tuffty' type of a guy, but I'm struggling to type here. I came across these beautiful dancers through browsing Hawaiian and South Seas music as I love the style. i'm struggling because my eyes are full of tears. Not tears of sadness, but of sheer emotion. They moved as one, their swaying movements reminded me of the sea where I spent years as a fisherman. Thank you for posting this, it is music for the ears and a visual feast for my eyes. a beautiful experience, Bob

  • woooooow

  • So beautiful and graceful!

  • they are all so together! down to the fingers!

  • I absolutely love this!

  • Beautiful!

  • Oh My Gosh even their dresses move at the same time!! haha this was beautiful, their awesome

  • I love how this originated from the Hawain Lua fighting style haha

  • i really like the queens pcture in the background,i could feel her spirit watching ,with a smile !

    1

  • I can't post a reply to the video response, so will post here. If you watch this halau they constantly are changing formations. In 2004, they start out in 4,5,6,7, then move into 7,8,7, then into 4,6,5,4,3, then into 6,5,6,5, and into 3 separate groups on 8,6,8. The entrance and exit blend in so well with the main song, it seems like one song and hula. Not only are they moving in formations, they are also moving up and down, it's very mesmerizing, like a flock of birds or a school of fish.

  • I remember seeing a program on Arthur Godfrey in which the dancer explained the hand and body movements as telling a story. I can feel the ocean waves in the movements of this dance, and sense the love and sorrow in the song. It almost makes me cry!

  • @kelticcirc45 very true.

  • @kelticcirc45 i want to see that program then! don't you think theres a video of it here on youtube, maybe?

  • this video is beautiful it made me cry

  • They're so together. Even their dresses flow at the same time. ^^

  • Oh how I miss Hawai'i I have been away for almost 10 yrs now...being in the military has kept me from going back more often!! My mom(she was born and raised there) and ALL of her ohana still live in Hawai'i! This hula...made me cry it is so beautiful!!! You would have to be retarded now to see it's beauty!!!!

  • absolutely beautiful

  • It‘s not tango and it’s choreograph but very impressive and beautiful. Can you imagine the time and effort these women put into this.

  • This is what I dreamed of doing..But I sure enjoy watching this video... Very nice...Lou

  • my point exactly,in the islands, smiles are from the soul.

  • gorgeous....can someone tell me the name of this song?

  • @moonstonegoddess

Ka Nohona Pili Kai is the name of this song

  • @lealeapau thank you soooooooooooooooo much

  • At the end one of the commentators says intoxicating rendition, perfect description. people come back to watch it over and over. I love the whole video from beginning to end, beautiful presentation, staging, spacing, watch footwork at 1:15, dresses all touching ground at same time. Should also watch 2004 video response. Watching this many girls in sync, all doing the same thing at the same time, it's mesmerizing. I like the part where some girls stop at 3:30, and they all continue in sync.

  • @nyawan222 さんへ

    涙そうそうをKeali`i Reichelがカバーして2005年HawaiiでHitしました。

    このハラウの歌は彼が歌っています*^-^*Hawaiiでは有名なKumu Hula&Singerです。

  • wow this was amazing!! so beautiful.

  • they move like water, it's sooo amazing

  • えっ?!涙そうそう?途中までそっくりだけど・・

    パクリじゃないよね?アレンジしただけ?

  • This halau is so consistant you can see the hard work put into practice, there aren't any noticeable flaws, makes you think of other women dancing, Rockettes, ballet, they can't compare with this. You can't put this many women on stage and always be perfect, but somehow they do. They are moving constantly, making new formations and still keeping in time with the others. Add the perfect song, costuming, like matching perfect wine with food you want to have more. I'd pay to see them in concert.

  • every moves has it own meaning.sooooo beautiful.

  • Amazing! I wanna learn!

  • uh! PERFECT!!

  • Absolutely love this graceful hula; Hawaiian beauty in its finest form. Makes me long for Hawaii and its beautiful, warm, friendly people. Incredible. I can watch this over and over. Plus the song is so beautiful too. Thank you for posting. Mahalo!

  • soo graceful and perfect

  • beautiful and graceful movements to a beautiful song.

  • This is one of the most beautiful hula dances I've ever seen. They move with grace and beauty like the ocean... wish I could dance like that! Love the song too, one of my faves. Everything about this performance is beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  • I hope to one day dance hula as they do with precision and grace. So inspiring to watch and aspire to. I love their style and appreciate kumu kau'is creativity.

  • Maika`i ka hual!. Mahalo. Joyce

  • I'm speechless,angels on earth,truly!

  • i don't understand the words, but i feel it.

  • so beautiful, on point and synchronized thats how a 1st place dance group looks!!! amazing job!!!

  • Best merrie monarch auana performance of all time!!!! Maybe its Keali'i...i dunno but it was the best auana ive ever seen, it had everything, grace, accuracy, emotion....its a classic!

  • To know is to dance! Beautiful!
