As a TKD practitioner of 20+ years, it always astounds me how people never put their hands up during a sparring session. You are just asking to get your teeth knocked down your throat.

you cant keep your hands up in taekwondo because you will get a roundhouse to the ribs over and over and there is a gap in the pads in the back so you might get kicked in the spine so it sets up unrealistic sparring styles but someone with a taekwondo and boxing background can fight

There are 2 ways to perform that kick: with or without spin (of the kicking leg).

The reason they don't block most kicks is because a) those kicks don't have a lot of power b) even if you "block" the kick, judges will typically give the guy who did the kick the point(s) and c) keeping your hands down makes your kicks faster.
