Im pretty sure her name is actually Lil instead of Real. Some Japanese have difficulty pronouncing L's and they end up sounding like R's. When i watched this anime half of it that i watched was subbed by one and the rest by another. one spelt her name Real, the other Lil.

Two different things. In the American version it is R-el, however In Japan, Geneon felt Lil was more fit for her character.

I recall it being written out as "Re-L" in the anime, so I always went with that. Wikipedia says, "Ergo Proxy anime, episode 7, 4:13: record shows RE-L MAYER. It should be noted a more ambiguous REAL is shown at the end of the episode 7, 23:56; the A being barely visible." What I'm taking from this is the same thing I take from most manga and anime: Japanese people don't speak English as their native language, so you might as well call the characters with western-ish names whatever you like.
