This song was my Uncle's favorite.. I remember those Texas summer weekends going to the lake.. listening to this.. hard to beleive it's been 20 years now since he's been gone.. RIP uncle david
I love the way Croce gives the audience exactly the classic version they're all waiting and hoping for.... too bad more performers today don't realize what the audience is wanting to hear!
I only became really aware of Jim Croce's music after hearing about his death on the radio the day it happened. I was 10 years old at the time. The station I usually listened to played a few of his songs back-to-back after the announcement, and I was hooked immediately. I've been a fan ever since. I had the pleasure of meeting his widow Ingrid a few years ago. That's her lovely voice you hear doing the harmonies in so many of his songs.
Wait a minute. People back in the day played live relying only on skill, talent, and creativity? No auto pitch correction? No lip-synching? No synthesizers? No dancers flying all over the place in ridiculous costumes? Get outta here, this cannot be real.
Gorgeous lyrics and a great tune. Jim was a master storyteller with an unforgettable voice. Jim and Maury made it sound like a whole band was playing.
@Lpitt56 that's the attitude that has ruined the music industry. First thing execs looks for are good looks. Sometimes, rarely now, people are just so damn good that their music goes right to the top.
@getgoodusa. I hope you did not misunderstand my post. I agree with you 100%, and Jim had more talent and coolnest in one of his fingernail clipping than the pretty boys today.
@baginamonolog I don't know why you think he's ugly, he comes from an italian family, & in my mind his looks are completely consistent with southern italians & sicilians. He used to have short close-cropped hair when he was younger, so he definitely looks better with long curly hair and a handlebar mustache. I got to meet his wife last night, & his son was playing piano in the jazz bar next door. Great restaurant, good food with a nice atmosphere in downtown San Diego.
@Stentor7 I never cared what he looked like, he just set my soul on fire with his music. I can listen to him all day and then still hit replay. He was such a GREAT.
Isn't this just about the same thing as "Bad Bad Leroy Brown"? I know the lyrics and tune are different, but the idea is that there is some badarse guy who nobody wants to screw around with cause he's amazing.
@jsemon2 - "Jim got it handed to him" after he was out of high school by a punk with a knife and gun. Who is bitter for being stupid enough to lose all his money gambling on pool. Also a guy named JIM sings this awesome song titled "You Don't Mess Around With Jim"....... annnnnnd now; twelve haters possibly named "slim".
I visited Croce's bar and grill in downtown San Diego in the mid to late 1980's, even got to hear AC, his son play a bit at the piano...great stuff! Get the chance I'd go back again, he left a legacy!
If somehow you are able to sing a song now, bringing these boys together whom you haven't even met, and make something so personal, so new, that the whole world takes notice and that your life was never the same again. But I'm telling you right now, I don't think it's going to happen.
Perfection. I can never see enough, I keep coming back for more. Croce was the greatest. So much talent, unbelievable. Sad to know he had only just begun entertain us. I still hurt when I think about the loss. RIP Jim & Maury.....
@TheCubbyJ I feel that the complete and utter disrespect for other's opinion is a window into your personality. Just because someone doesn't share the same opinion as you or listen to the same music doesn't make them "Shit" just different. I'm not a fan of pop music, but I'll fight to the death for the right to listen to it. It's ignorant, close-minded people like you that mess this beautiful world up.
@xxdjcharlierockxx LOL...no...I was actually admiring your comment so much, I had to repeat it! You nailed it man, they just don't know what they're listening to! May this be our best year ever. 2011 will be remembered as the year that changed world. Peace.

This is beautifully remastered, well done! Thank you so much for this great song, I love Jim Croce and his music , he is a classic. Thanks for sharing.

@xxdjcharlierockxx Thank you for your comment, Charlie. It is why we, as parents, must be sure from the earliest age on to keep our children from today's garbage, and to provide excellent alternatives. It is so sad that there is essentially nothing current worthwhile to introduce kids to...
@drb622bucs The song follows the same format of Bad Bad Leroy Brown, painting a tough picture of a guy in the first half, then pulling him violently down to the ground in the second half by someone they made the mistake of crossing.
I guess you could say the moral is that there's always a bigger, badder fish, so best to watch your manners. Great stuff and we need more like him.
Jim is the best singer song writer and performer that has ever lived and the reason that I do what I do check out my bands tribute to Jim Croce at outofthinair1 on youtube
he wrote this song after a real run in with a true pool hustler and ten stiches later and 21 steps down and out he wrote the song this man wrote what he lived and thats why 100 years from now people will know who he was bigger then robert zimmerman in my eyes he was a poet
Back in the time's of Jim, you didn't need light's and firework's. The Musician was the light's and their music was the firework's. Great Time's thankyou Jim...R.I.P

Jim Croce, Wow! What a great artist and song!! Real talent with no studio enhancement. Unlike anything being done today. If you take many of the so called musical artist of today and put them in a live setting, they would bomb and fall flat on their face!
Today's musicians have sold out, I agree. They are so into digital and digitalization. This is talent, something we see less and less of. I can't stand most of today's musicians - weak, pathetic and they give their music away - and their music sucks
@loveasia2much I agree, however since the Record Weasels can make a lot more money from 1 Lady Bieber then they can with 10 Jim Croces you're just going to get the same recycled crap from the music industry.
The good news is that since the technology has advanced to the point where it's affordable, and the internet is amazing for distribution, you can FIND the Jim Croces that are out there and hear them, and support them.
Jim Walker vs Leroy Brown anybody?

Jim Croce, Wow! What a great artist and song!! Real talent with no studio enhancement. Unlike anything being done today. If you take many of the so called musical artist of today and put them in a live setting, they would bomb and fall flat on their face!

Today's musicians have sold out, I agree. They are so into digital and digitalization. This is talent, something we see less and less of. I can't stand most of today's musicians - weak, pathetic and they give their music away - and their music sucks

Amazing what music actually sounds like. Maybe the recording artists today can learn something from the old legends.
