After playing KotoR it somewhat leaves you with a need for more and it delivers in over 20+hours on the first playthrough but there is MANY MANY options not just light or dark sides

there's just very few games from that era which compare to KOTOR. kotor was....incredible. mass effect may have built on it but KOTOR just had a different atmosphere and i think that's what won it out for some.

ME2 is an amazing game but to be honest i like ME1 more, and KotOR was an even more amazing game when it released, combined with a nostalgic view it's simply a better game. You can argue that ME is its own intellectual property and rightfully applaud bioware for their achievement, but KotOR was based in the SW universe and they still created a standalone masterpiece, a true feat.

And KotOR was original...

Star Wars revolutionized the Sci-Fi industry (like Alien) in ways that directors today couldn't even imagine today, Mass Effect takes a lot of its inspiration from Star Wars and is made by Bioware. Who made Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, honestly if Mass Effect came out back then as much as I hate to say it, no one would get it because it is an extension off Star Wars IMO.

And for the same developer argument, BioWare also made a Sonic game along with KoToR, TOR, and ME. Also Mass Effect follows most sci-fi series that I know of in that it takes place in the future Milky Way galaxy, while Star Wars takes place in a distant galaxy in the distant past
