Wow. I've loved this song for years. But for some reason, the line "every place is just the same, isn't it?" always made me think it was a negative thing, but then just tonight I put it in a new perspective. Sure, same ground, you work. but wow how different some new countries are. Despite the same hardships I had while I was overseas, there were new things to learn and enjoy. Made this song suddenly seem hopeful. Guess I was reading it wrong at first?
I still wonder which idea led to Thomas Dolby producing a song about Leipzig, a city in then GDR. :) The Leipzig Trade Fair? Anyway it has recovered nowadays and has become a beautiful city again, especially in terms of air quality. ;)
@ahetza funny i get the thumbs down...i have to say.. Ive fallen in love with the original...more so than this version ..but this is still great nonetheless
The synthesizers are very kraftwek influenced in this song. There is another song that he does that is even more Kraftwerk .....In this song listen between 3:49and 4:04 Extremely Kraftwer. This is just how it is...get used to it pal LOL
He looks like Frankenberry (the US breakfast cereal character) with those goggles and overcoat...LOL! This is a great song. I love how he layers it all up.
take note current losers with lappys . this is a master surrounded with the tools of his CRAFT yes music. no need to be on stage with a bunch of pointless dancers to ENTERTAIN us. ta Mr Dolby
I Love Thomas Dolby's Brilliant songs, but wish I could find the original of "Leipzig" as it sounded much more Haunting especially during the 80s when I first heard it when this WhiRrRL'd was Far Less 'free' than it is(n'T) today. Does anyone have the link to it ? Danke Schöen!
I had the pleasure of opening for him in Memphis in the 80 with our band CalculatedX and got to have a short chat with him on his recent tour when he came here a couple years ago. He didn't remember being here in the 80's so I reminded him of the fact. Back in the day at sound check he exchanged files with our producer who at the time owned a fairlight synth. Thomas keep writing songs like suitcase and Leipzig.
I had this on 12 inch back in the day and always loved it - was my favorite DB tune. Anyway - many years ago it astray. I've just found it again !! Fantastic. Although this arrangement is different - I prefer the original.
I missed this track back in the day, but it's instantly catchy & fresh. Great music doesn't age and it's good to see Thomas Dolby still peforming. Thanx for the upload.
I can't believe I've just found this! Thomas Dolby was always profoundly soulful -"I'm like a cork in the ocean, and bobbing on the north sea" - and this is bang up to date. Thank You!
I wouldn't call Golden Age or Flat Earth "stripped down"... the arrangements are plenty busy/dense. However the actual timbre of the albums is rawer and more in-your-face than some later work which is probably what you're reffering to.
I Love this podcast. At first to be honest, i never liked Thomas Dolby when i heard hyperactive, Im more a Depeche mode, Kraftwerk fan, But after listening to this Podcast 1,2,3,4 etc... I like Thomas Dolby now.. Great tracks, These songs are now on my ipod.
This clip and all the other podcasts are phenomenal, but I've just received my copy of the DVD and the version that kicks off the DVD is 100 times better. Really phenomenal DVD.
I told my boyfriend that if Thomas Dolby actually went as far as to perform Hot Sauce at House Of Blues that he would have to stick a finger full of hot sauce up his butt right there at the show. Thomas Dolby proved to me that night that dreams really do come true and butts were burning.
dat fucking bass sound

HOLY KRAFTWERK

That's a fairly ignorant statement as this has almost nothing in common with the Kraftwerk sound.

Dolby was right when he wrote the song in the 80s - Leipzig was full of Honnecker-esque tower blocks that all looked the same!
