I didn't trust GERTY at all at first. This scene was pretty emotionally poignant because usually robots are portrayed as such antagonists.

What this movie teaches us, that we are nothing else but computers.

Our memory is just just data. And i dont mean that in any metaphorical way.

It can be edited and manipulated (in theory). Everything what we think and feel is our past, is worthless. Data. 1 and 0. We cant even tell for sure that we really experienced what we think what happened to us. You dont even know if you or youre conscious was just born minutes ago, And you will die in a couple of seconds. Giving your memory to s.o. else

GERTY is awesome. Love this movie. GERTY in full blown smiley mode is superb. And yes mhbed5, I thought this was going full HAL. Thankfully it didn't, and I and the movie are all the better for that.

@mhbed5 That's the point I think, I mean they play him up like a villain or malfunctioning at the start, with him getting in the way/ keeping stuff from sam and the Gerty 9000 logo or whatever it was to bring up memories of Hal and the twist was that he was good all along.

gerty has more humanity than the humans on earth who just killed the first clones. gerty even helps clone 5 on his plan to return to earth, and this is different becouse robots and A.I. are usually shown like the enemy or evil. great great movie.

I personally think that Gerty is Sam's greatest comfort in his situation. Can you imagine if Gerty was an absolute robot (i.e. without emotions etc...) and Sam somehow found out about his clone status and had to continue the rest of his lonely existence with inanimate alien and hostile objects? To this, I don't think that Sarang was being 'counter-productive' by inventing a robot w emotions. That cld even be strategic on their part...to cushion the backlash should a clone discover he is one.

I just watched this movie and the whole time GERTY was twisting my heartstrings, but when he made the crying face I absolutely burst into tears. It was just too sweet. I'm really happy he was not a HAL 9000 kind of robot and ended up being a sidekick to the protagonist instead of siding with LUNAR.

I wouldn't be so sure. Remember Gerty told all the other clones that the return vehicle was real and then incinerated them. Then Gerty's arm came in with a dust pan and cleaned up their ashes and coldly awakened another clone.
