This song was written by the late John Stewart (formerly of The Kingston Trio), and his studio version appears on his "California Bloodlines" LP. a true masterpiece.
The late great John Stewart wrote this one. I can remember seeing this album after I thought the Spoonful had broken up for good (it was mainly the Joe Butler Show at this point).
@landrykkb I liked the Pat Boone version also I wish someone would post the clip on Youtube of the Beverly Hillbillies the last episode of season 7-24 , episode #224 overall "Collard Greens an' Fatback" aired March 26th, 1969 but I imagine there would be some copyright violations. TV today is so empty and shallow I have not really been interested in any shows in decades. Thank God for reruns on cable !
@617AV86892 I actually did come across that particular episode on here not long ago.I suggest typing in Pat Boone alongside Beverly Hillbillies and see what you come up with.
@landrykkb Thanks I found it ! I know that John Sebastian wrote it and the lvin Spoonful charted 73 I believe in July of 1969, and the hillbilly's episode aired in March of 1969 . i am guessing that Pat Boone tryed to make it a hit first .
I'm in seventh heaven hearing this fantastic song. What a great trip down memory lane. You created such a scenic and wonderful video that is such a pleasure to watch and listen to!!

Was a big Spoonful fan back in the day (yeah, I REMEMBER). Love 'em and Sebastian to this day.

@617AV86892 I'm not honestly sure who tried to make it a hit first, but it was Steve Boone of the Spoonful who sang lead on it with them.
