Nobody, including the native peoples, would disagree about that. The issue is only whether they are able to attend, and make use of, things like education. For instance, the Government policy - now recently repealed (1950's) - required natives to be segregated on small reserves. These reserves tended to be far from large centers, educational facilities, and job opportunities with growth potential. That policy, as just one example of many, represents a great hinderance to the aboriginal peoples.

Well just started my summer job at the band office $30 an hour library assistant federal money. so i don't have to report that to welfare. i don't know what i'd do without welfare. i know i wouldn't have those new 17 " hankook tires for my avalanche. or the nice tint on my windows. or the $1500 in tax rebate for paying rent on a house i don't live at. what am i going to spend my $10'000 in casino money on this year. it's not all take i give old clothes to salvation for the poor white folks.

I find it sad that some of the people of Caledonia are so clearly unable to understand that this is a political matter, not a simple "legal" matter. Law is premised on political policy, and the policy in this area is not at all resolved or settled. This is not least the case because the 'rule of law' is based on the idea that all those subjected to the law also have had a say in creating that law - which natives have clearly not (Rousseau).

It was not until the mid 1960's that aboriginal peoples were given the right to vote. That is hardly ancient history mistreatment! Furthermore, mistreatment can have lasting generational effects. Hello says - I think Bush was voted into office by average citizens, at least that is what they tell us. Only people who work and pay taxes should be entitled to vote, so I guess leaves most aboriginals out of voting. Nobody, including the native peoples, would disagree about that. The issue is only whether they are able to attend, and make use of, things like education. For instance, the Government policy - now recently repealed (1950's) - required natives to be segregated on small reserves. These reserves tended to be far from large centers, educational facilities, and job opportunities with growth potential. That policy, as just one example of many, represents a great hinderance to the aboriginal peoples.

Hello Says - In 1979 a native I know left the Cape Crocker reservation, which is located north of Owen Sound. He now lives in Oshawa, where he worked at General Motors. Even with only a grade six education, he knew enough to leave the reservation. Not once did I ever hear him get into the "hate the white man" complaining. Outside of the land issues, he realized that any education the natives had, was provided by the British who settled in Canada, and the job he had was because of a US company.

We can discuss the method of political protest - but even violent action is sometimes warranted. Take for example the American Revolution (which the British used to call the Great Rebellion). The action was violent, but was self-legitimizing and the end result was a union based on the rules and laws that best suited the population subjected to those laws - although again, there, natives were not consulted. The point is that protest can be legitimate. Even violent protest, at times.

What I advocate is the use of every other method first. But, you cannot deny that violence remains legitimate. If someone breaks into your home, you should call the police. The problem with your conception of "fair and square" is that it may not be fair or square. If your children, or perhaps even your wife, sells your car, without your consent - is that fair? The question remains open to debate as to whether those who 'sold' the land in fact had the legal authority to do so. Traditional English practice was to buy from the males of a clan, but the Six Nations are a maternally headed group. Did Canada purchase from someone not authorized to sell?

Serious question for the natives.
The government currently gives over 10 billion dollars annually to natives, yet your society has the highest drug dependancy, alcoholism, unemployment, mortality, and welfare. No other ethnic group even comes close to these numbers, and they receive no monies. At what point in your lives do you start to be accountable and quit relying on handouts?
