I played this video in class to discuss and analyze how lyrics and music work together. Guess what my students (18 to b19) said: "Who are these guys?" I pity the young generation because they grow up with shitty music and have no real chance to experience true talent (with very few exceptions).
Gilmour is proof positive that speed and difficulty alone does not make one a legendary guitarist. While excellent in these facets as well, the biggest reason he's always making top ten lists is because of his talent for conveying incredibly intense emotion through the instrument. Most critics say that he sticks out from the rest of the pack for this very reason.
I appreciate Roger Waters for his brilliance but he is not the essence of Pink Floyd. Proven fact. Now Gilmour, different story. He is the "true Lord of the strings". Never before and never since. one and only. I hope he keeps playing til he's 110! I will never stop listening. my, is he beautiful though. Even still.
There are no words that can describe the sheer power of that guitar solo. It almost sends you to another dimension when you listen to it, simply amazing.
As much as I am a fan of Gilmour, I am still not comfortably numb with him doing Floyd songs without Waters. It's like McCartney doing Beatle songs without Lennon.
Warning ... it is perfectly normal behaviour to wet your pants during the second guitar solo ... in fact if you don't, there is something seriously wrong with you.
im 21 and i have some life big goals , expectations or wishes... to be a father, to be rich, to be healthy and to be on a david gilmour's concert. If i had to give up on one of them i seriously think it wouldnt be the last one
I'm not even a Floyd fan, though I like them fine in small doses. But every time I hear Gilmour, I'm struck by how great his tone and phrasing are. He never walks all over the song. Every time the chord sequence goes around, he plays a line, then builds on it in the second line, then wraps up in the last line -- like he's writing a paragraph. It's textbook, and I mean that in a good way. He and Robin Trower both have that ability to keep a slow-moving solo interesting. Good post.
i love bowies take on this. very ballsy move, but i think it works for the song. kinda creepy-crazy, going with the spacy epicness that is david gilmour. incredible.
@1JAT1 What David Bowie is singing is actually the harmony of the verse. Listen to any other recording and you'll hear it in the background. But as you said, incredible nonetheless.
70Halloween? I would've given anything to have been at The Royal Albert Hall that night in 2007, as much as I listen to both of these too Talented Guys!!!!!!!!!

@diddlytube Very aptly said! You have great insight on Gilmour's uniqueness and why his fans are so loyal and appreciative of his music. ☮in☮out1
