all my friends that are on unemployment laugh about it. they are just taking the money cause they dont feel like working. they go to the beach all the time.
Unemployment insurance is bad because it changes the job market. People when they have 2 years to find work are going to look for a job with a comparable salary to there last one. A safety net is needed for people to get back on their feet but 2 years is getting a little bit much.
"in the midst of a recession you need to insert in this economy, economic activity in spending and the money that flows throu the fastest is unemployment benefits to those out of work" --Dick Durbun doesn't understand basic economics. That keynesian economist fraud, Paul Krugmen must have told him this. HA! Him and the rest of our incompetent politicians need to read the book "economics in one lesson" and tune in to Peter Schiff's radio show because they are clueless.
Bastiat did say that once Legal Plunder was started in a country that it would build into a system, where everyone would be going after a piece of the government pie. It wouldn't matter if the piece of the pie was coming from their own pockets or their neighbors pockets. I would say that most Americans participate in the Legal Plunder that Bastiat warned about.
In The Law, written 1848, Bastiat, a French legislator, said that America had the greatest system of government in the world, because we didn't have a system of "Legal Plunder", such as France had. Legal plunder was when government had the power to take by "legal force" from one citizen to give to another or to grant citizens privileges over other citizens. Our Constitution did not allow for Legal plunder. Of course, the flaw Bastiat said America did have was slavery.
Jim Bunning is a complete piece of shit. I can NOT fuking believe he said he was going to object every single time regardless. I dont care if he finally did the right thing in the end. He needs his ass kicked HARD.
Senator Dick Durbin -- D--Illinois -- is a much smarter United States Senator in Congress than some cocksucker named Senator Jim Bunning -- R--Kentucky -- in contrast as a United States Senator. Obvious -- Isn't It? A Useful 6!! Jim Bunning would be wise to put his ego in neutral.
@ToxicOdiousOne, lol, I bet, just shows how morally inverted the Tea Partiers and people like Jim Bunning are. What's funny is I know some "Tea Party" folk that are so into jailing criminals and blah-blah-blah, yet I turn around and see them buying weed! Fuckin' hypocrites.
Its not like these are wellfare people. This is unemployment. People who have had a job and did not choose to leave it. They must look for a job to get their benefits...which is just 1200 dollars a month. If you take this money away, these millions of people will have no money to spend and the economy will be worse.
@spinnersmetal, and 1200 is barely enough to survive on at all. People should have a little bit to spend on their sanity as well, which would be entertainment. A night out for the kids, a date with the girlfriend, a night out with your buds. Or just enjoying a day in, ordering a pizza, etc. Or buying a little weed, or a couple brews.
But 90% at least of the money goes to basic survival in this country, if not all of it. While still having to sell your possesions to stay afloat. etc.
all bunch of pigs. fat belly fed up with 6 figure salaries given to senators. These are insurances that paid for by taxpayers. its not just unempolyeed now its for people who might get unemployeed in the future.that means YOU or ME down the line. ARE YOU LOoking for a insurance scam. HERE IT IS. look no further. this is the insuarnce scam. GOPs rather spend it for invading other country and give to haitians for free then help the US taxpayers. YOUR JOB IS NEXT so dont count on it too long.
@AUgrad00 Well if you are serious, I wonder if you will still be saying that in the event that these obstructionist politics take 1.2 million Americans source of income away, causing an event worse recession, eventually effecting you when you too find yourself out of work.
I don't call it "income" I call it "welfare" because they didn't work for it plus SOME of those unemployed are just spending those checks for alcohol, and something else.
I know there are pros and cons on blocking jobless benefits.
I also know that there are pros and cons in letting those jobless benefits continue.
@KodaJosh098 Inaccurate statement. First off, Unemployment benefits are NOT welfare at all! It is actually insurance, and the only way one can collect it is to have worked at some point. If someone has paid for this insurance for 10, 20 or even more than 30 years, what is wrong with them collecting in a time of loss? It's just like if someone's house burns down, they collect homeowner's insurance money. Plus, the benefits r usually 1/2 of what the person was making working!
You're an idiot. If they want to spend that money on alcohol, than they can. Its THEIR money. To even qualify for it, you had to of invested in it. Its INSURANCE not WELFARE. Do you understand the basic differences?
As an American, I am deeply concerned by your decision to pursue charges against a citizen, Mr. Bruce Shore, who legitimately expressed his deep offense at your callous attitude towards Americans in his position, and your participation in the obstructionist politics which have brought your party to a low of disgrace with few precedents in the affairs of our nation -
@Enantiodromialist - conduct which has led a distinguished Governor, among many others, to quite rightly level charges of sedition.
I, of course, need not add that none of the actions of Mr. Shore compare to the daily roar of unpatriotic, anti-American hatred of our President, of our forms of government, and of the belief in our founding principles shared by the vast majority of Americans,
@Enantiodromialist - which many of those who share your party and ideological affiliation seem to feel themselves entitled to express with impunity.
Among this roar of un-Americanism, there is to be found, quite prominently - as is well known - the basest form of treasonous, neo-Confederate sentiment.
Senator, it is my right as an American to know where you stand.
All of you guys are hella dumb. maybe you guys have been living under a rock for awhile so I will inform you of whats going on right now. Our federal debt is 12 trillion. So if they keep spending money on YOUR financial mistakes, I will be paying for your dumbass mistakes.I Apologize for your failure to learn money managment. Try googling personal financial managment.
@thisISyourBESTfriend $700 billion for bank "mistakes", trillions for millionaire/billionaire tax cuts, trillions for a war based on lies, so NOW suddenly $33 billion to avoid economic collapse to "too much spending? Why do you wait until millions of Americans, many who didn't make "mistakes" at all are in need to suddenly say we are spending too much?
Way to spin this..he was standing up for pay as you go and they did not have the money to pay for this. He is not against unemployment benefits he is against the wreckless spending in Washington he finally just lost it. Good for him. You jerks in Washington waste to much money.
Thank you for helping those of us who are taking our unemployment money to drive to interviews, post resumes, and attend college classes, nothing like take away the ability to allow your citzens to succeed in life. Really Sen. Bunning I can't tell you how much we appreciate your support of the extension. Those of us relying on the benefits we receive due to lack of jobs, wil now just cost you (and your GOP cronnies) more money. Thanks for showing what a responsible official you are.
I have a feeling that he and few others that are not running in the next election are paid by the Republican leadership, to disrupt and do as much damage as they can to the House and Senate and the Obama Administration.
Forgive him to object! He is a little of balance and does not remember that he objected to the last objection before he objected to the first objection when he objected? Can someone from the republicans come over and help this embarrassment out?
Somebody check his hearing aid batteries, doesn't he know the GOP is dead. People need help now, not 5 or 10 years from now when we might be able to pay for it. Just because President Obama, passed some law called "Paygo", about congress not spending more money unless we can pay for it, that doesn't mean people should suffer. Just because President Obama passes some lame law to stop the growing deficit, why does one old republican think he has to follow it now.
Okay, I'm not sure how most people here do math, so let me pose this question a different way: If you can't pay for a program, isn't debating over whether or not it's a good program purely academic?
There is a reason the people of Kentucky, one of the most conservative states in the country, and one of the poorest [ Bush won handily there, as did McCain] do not want any part of Senator Bunning [ his approval ratings were measured at 28 percent recently]. He is a lazy, bitter, senile pig who found the courage to block unemployment benefits precisely because he is not facing another election campaign.
This video does quite a good job at editing, however for some reason the part of the video where Bunning asks for a simple vote, up or down, is not here. Bunning asked for a vote of up or down, all those democrats could have passed this - but they as in the democrats refused to have a simple vote. It was the democrats who refused to pass this, Bunning was only forcing the democrats to be true to their word - show where the money will come from. Nice try.
To set the record straight, It is the companies that pay into UI not the workers. And when the compeany pays UI that companies tax rate goes up. However that is not a reason to not pay it out.
@kd5icr- finally someone understands! Employees do pay into it but not even a fraction of what the business pays and people don't realize that the business pays that unemployment when the employee starts collecting.
Ever had to fight your previous employer FOR your unemployment? THAT'S why employers fight it. And the state picks up part of the tab as well. UI tax on a paycheck is TINY! When I made $1000 a week something like $8 went to UI.
Agreed. However it is not up to the emloyer if you get it or not, Here in Texas the Texas workforce commission desides
and you can have hearings on it. You vs job. As of today this is only the second time in my life I have used UI. I would rather be working but jobs are kinda hard to find right now. It is something like 10 people for every open job right now. I made the same as you as a truck driver but the economy is so slow companies can pick and chose who they hire, It will turn around soon
I don't make that anymore, I became self employed and work far less for far more. But that's what I was saying, the employer tries to fight someone getting unemployment because they are the ones that pay for it. Someone else always ultimately decides who wins that money.
Small business employs 70% of the population. If I can't afford to pay you for working how can I afford to pay you for not working?
I've gotten unemployment for a total of 6 weeks in my life and it was by choice.
I think it will turn around but sometimes people have to reinvent themselves and find a marketable skill that they aren't used to in order to make ends meet. People have been doing it for centuries!
If you want a job and you're articulate and can deal with the public there ARE jobs out there. Sometimes it's thankless but a telemarketer for example can make a GOOD living b/c all salesmen need to get in front of a customer and they pay dearly for it most of the time.
"Sometimes it's thankless but a telemarketer for example can make a GOOD living b/c all salesmen need to get in front of a customer and they pay dearly for it most of the time. "
Yeah, a great job? Why don't you tell people to put on hot pants and walk the streets? That is a high paying honest job too.
If that is all that the conservatives can offer then their global plan sucks like their party.
I, as an example had been on the phones for the better part of my life then went into outside sales. Self employed outside sales. I paid $35 an hour for telemarketing services! Cash, up front for 100 hour blocks!
If actual unemployment is around 20%, there's 80% still working & not all of those people are broke... and they're still buying plenty. Trust me.
To pass by Unanimous Consent means we will not know who voted for or against. Additionally, why is it just now being brought up. Congress has know the expiration date of the Unemployment relief program since they passed the original. And finally, what happened to the pay as you go bill passed and why not take money from other things like Tarp or other bail out money that was repaid or not used?
This hypocrite complains about supporting people in need during a time of recession when he and his friends mortgaged the nation to go blow a few holes in the middle east.
What an absolutely disingenuous video. Why aren't they showing us his rebuttals? What's the fucking point debating over whether or not we should give money to unemployed people when there is no money to give them?
Wow this guy is an American hero and you guys ar ebashing him just because he dosen't support YOUR liberal idea? If this is the way the education system teaches people to act then I resent being American.
An American Hero? A hero is someone who stands on principle, someone who always follows their beliefs. Bunning has repeatedly voted for bills that have increased the federal budget without a simultaneous mechanism for rectifying the cost. Now, months from retirement [ as his approval ratings in Kentucky have tanked,[ and this in an extremely conservative state] the demented old pig claims to stand on 'principle'. Lets send the asshole a dictionary.
1 more thing: my husband's best friend's company closed down. He's been on unemployment for 22 weeks. In that 22 weeks he hasn't spent 22 minutes looking for a job. Why? He thought he'd get an extention. Well, no extentions in PA so now what? He's going to lose his apartment and move into my empty condo rent free/trade for work on it.
he took a vacation and had no urgency to take care of HIMSELF because the govt was sending him a check.
I work on commission only which guarantees that I will always have a job. Do I always earn enough? no. Do I have $ saved for when that happens? yes. But I don't get paid unless my company gets paid. I employ a few people myself and they also do not get paid unless I do. You have to PRODUCE something to get paid, not just show up. I've had people that have bucked me on it... fine! get out and find another job. There's no urgency anymore. We can't keep borrowing or taxing to pay for everyone!
I'm tired of working my ass off for someone to take my money and give it to someone that doesn't do anything for it. It's sad when someone loses their job but there IS work out there. Will you do it? Will you work for less money and longer hours? If that's what it takes to keep my child fed I will, will you? I keep hearing how people deserve more than that and it confuses me. Did you invent anything? Do you have a marketable skill? How about working on commission?
I want to know who you people think actually ends up paying for the unemployment benefits!? The state govts only pay HALF.
If I can't afford to keep someone employed I sure as hell can't afford to pay someone for NOT working. Unemployment benefits have a maximum amount no matter how much you earn... that amount isn't going back into the economy! it's not nearly enough to go back into it!
mixalis, this recession has been in force for quite a while now... and crime stats have dropped. The truth is that when there is crisis people pull together when left to their own devices. We didn't have major crime sprees during the depression so what now? handing people $ doesn't deter crime. A criminal is a criminal. You could wipe out every dime I have and I would never harm another person no matter what. Character doesn't suddenly change with money.
all I know is I would die of shame to be on unemployment for any length of time. I would DIE of shame to have the people of this country paying for my diapers. Why can't people start taking care of themselves for a change?
I'm commission only. I pay shit loads in taxes. There are PLENTY of commission only jobs out there and if someone is really hungry they'll do it.
I also am in the process of patenting an invention and I fully intend to sell it ASAP. Neccesity is the mother of invention. What I invented was not "NEEDED" but what was needed was a large check made out to me. I fully expect to sell that patent in very little time. where's the ingenuity of this nation????
Because it's impossible to find a job. My father was unemployed for 9 months because there were no jobs available for him. He finally resorted to taking on freelance work to pay the bills.
Please, don't start accusing the unemployed of being lazy unless you've had first-hand experience with the reality of unemployment. You just come off looking ignorant.
vexis- you have just PROVEN what I'm saying without even being smart enough to know you did it! I do have first hand experience with the reality of unemployment. I am about to allow someone to live in my empty condo rent free because he sat on his ass for 22 weeks without bothering to look for a job cause he thought he'd get an extention.
Your dad "resorted" to freelance work? No, your dad went back to work and didn't whine about it and demand taxpayers pay his bills that he incurred. yay!
So vexis, my donating $900 a month out of the goodness of my heart gives me first hand experience. And this isn't the first time we've done this! I know first hand. In fact, the only person in the last year that I know didn't have a job and wasn't lazy GOT A JOB. The others are watching tv talking about how bad the economy is and how there are no jobs. yet they haven't bothered looking for one. must be nice!
Corrupt and arrogant, insensitive to others, selfish.. bitter.. uncooperative.
Sen. Bunning cares about himself and nobody else.
He truly lacks common sense(besides being a jackass). Unemployment has huge negative implications in western societies(as more and more people live paycheck to paycheck) such as in the US.
What does that mean? Crime will skyrocket and damage further the socio-economic ' fabric' of this country.
so if a black man used that grammar would you complain or talk shit? chaka fatah speaks like he's straight off the crack corner. Ludacris or Snoop Dogg have better grammar than that guy.
When enough people have no food, home, or connection to their community, these people will commit crimes against the people that still have these things.
Our Jails/prison system could not take the increase and Obama would be blamed for the "unexpected rise in crime".
Bunning is also mad at the rep leadership and this does cast a pall on the entire GOG. People of all income levels and ages are effected by the actions of "one lone republican". Every news has labeled him this way.
fuck all of these GOP and so called JIM Bunning they need to extend the unemployment benefit and stop wasting the TAX payers money on stuppid war in AFGHANISTAN ANS IRAQ, how much is the afghanistan war coasting us? thousand millions A DAY.
It's interesting that this video is edited to not include Senator Bunning's complete comments. This is typical of the Daily Kos. Daily lies backed up by carefully edited clips. Why not let the man's complete argument be heard, and then let people come up with an informed opinion? Can the Daily Kos not handle informed opinions?
Because that would show Reid, Durbin and those other democrats for who they are. If you edit the tape, then you can spoon feed this to the blind and they will follow - because it is the fault of . . . . . . . Bush. When in doubt, blame Bush. I'm shocked that the entire media has not thrown the blame for this on Bush yet.
Interesting how the "deficit" didn't seem to bother ole' Jim as much when George Bush was the President. He wasn't as concerned about "saving America." Talk about a "grandstand play." He's an asshole.
more unemployment money for people that buy BEER, junk food, liquor, fast food, Or just people waiting out the economy and not going for the cheap jobs that's cheaper than unemployment because they made more money 2 year before.
Hhhmmm the program in out of money, social security will be bankrupt at the end of the year. Debt to infinity with interest. The Debt added on to will cost more money into the future than what it save us in the short term. The next time it will be to late.
@idrobinhood Oh yes speak for yourself. The nearest "cheapest jobs" are working in the fields. and those jobs are limited because of the drought in California. so you have any other ideas?
build chicken coops, search how to build chicken coops, make organic soap,
Sorry for California. But you must face it. California has to many mandated social programs, and wages are to high, making a lot of businesses to move to the Rocky Mountain region. Which is expected to have growth in jobs and a growth in new business startups. My main ideal is to move from California.
What happen to the farm region which had there pump shut down due to a little bait fish?
During his career, Bunning has passed through over 21 trillion dollars worth of bail out and defense pork -- 2100 times in magnitude as compared to the unemployment extension.
Isn't it something that it's the rich that speak the loudest against benefits for all? When it was every day man that bailed them out, making the rich richer. In doing so we've given them our grandchildren's dollar and they don't even want the working man to even be able to see a doctor. Shame on the rich, it's time to give back!
This fucking idiot is undoing all the self inflicted damage of democratic party. This will paint the Gop as a bunch of big business brown nose shitheads who don't care about the little people.
yeah its the same resession cause our money for any help for anybody was given to the richest people in the USA as a reward for screwing up and causing the whole thing in the first place
get the money from them
those same rich people will try to use there money to get the same polititians voted back again and the ones needing the money will allways be relying on govt for there most basic needs forever
@republicanpower I agree. Way to go, Jim. While we're at it, let's move all minorities and gay people to ghettos and exterminate them. Sounds like a plan.
@rebublicanpower The sad thing about this all is that you really believe it affects just "ghetto trash". People really need to grow up and stop spending all their energy on being angry all the time. This is a pretty sad state we're all in.
Bunning is lucky he's retiring from the senate this year; with unemployment in KY at around 10%, this move won't make him very popular at home. I understand the point he's trying to make, but he really ought to pick his battles more carefully. Objecting to this bill at this time just makes him look like a dick
Thank you Senator Bunning. A leader is one who is willing to stand when others refuse to. No matter how good the bill is, if you refuse to show how it will be paid for then it is not a good bill. Why can't these democrats simply show how this bill will be paid for or cut funds from somewhere else?
We the citizens of this country must follow our budget on a monthly basis, but for some reason these democrats in office seem irritated when we expect them to do the same. How typical.
Yes, we must give more money for wars, more money to fight abortions, more money to make sure everyone owns a gun, more money to fight the homosexual agenda. We must not give money to the poor and needy because that is their fault. We must not provide health care to those that need it. We must not provide unemployment benefits to lazy unemployed people with children. If they knock on your door for food, shoot them with the guns the gun lobby had our government pay for.
No, everyone has a right to own a gun, however should they actually want a gun then they have to purchase it without my money - that is the difference between a republican and democrat. A democrat would say that owning a gun is your right, and we the taxpayers are required to purchase a gun for you.
If you give away money, people will not work for it.
I guess we should also bailout every failing business and give CEO bonuses, just like Obama/democrats did with the GM CEO; 1 million/1month
@armyofonerd This is a temporary measure, not a permanent allocation of funds. Paygo legislation does not apply to emergency funding. This HR bill is necessary to keep people's ui assistance funded, as well as a plethora of public highway projects which will otherwise be shut down. Emergency spending bills were the means by which the Bush adm. secured funding for the middle east wars - and those bills were each worth $100 billion or more, not the $10 billion now being sought
@makeitatriple I don't care what kind of measure it is, if those in public office can't show where the money will come from, how it will be funded or cut another "entitlement" to pay for this - then I agree - it should not be enacted.
What did people do 50, 75, 100 or 150 years ago do - did they wait around for another gov't handout - did they take 9 months to find another job?!
Come on people, move to where the jobs are, change trades - but don't demand others pay for your "benefit".
You can get two part time jobs to help meet your financial responsibility.
You could be re-trained into another field.
However, sitting, waiting or holding out until your original field/job returns may not be possible, nor should the taxpaying citizens of this country continue to give away benefits while people are allowed to do so.
Many people work for less for job security and health benefits, we should not be punished for doing so.
@armyofonerd We have unemployment benefits for a reason. 100 years ago people would have to steal or starve when no jobs were available. I've been gainfully employed for well over a decade, making between 40k and 90k a year, and have paid plenty into the benefit system, just like many of the currently unemployed. I've taken a couple of part-time jobs now, because my ui benefit is not enough to pay my bills, but times are tough, and not everyone can find the work. A little humanity, please
@makeitatriple Yes we have those benefits, but for how many months do you want these to continue, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 2 years!!? I have humanity, I've worked for a furniture repo place, loading trucks for UPS and fast food. I know "poor", but making $25K or $30K is not poor. It is one thing to work and earn those benefits, however it is something far different to simply give those benefits away to those who can work, but refuse to because they would make less.
@armyofonerd Given the paltry amount paid by ui, and the current level of unemployment, it's likely very few people are choosing to remain unemployed. You'd be hard pressed to find a job that pays less than ui. And again, Bunning really needs to pick his battles more carefully. Choosing to now make a stand (on the backs of the unemployed) is pretty callous
@makeitatriple I just read where a teacher in Texas has been receiving ui for 2 years. Two YEARS!!!!! Is this what the program was intended for? Are you telling me that in 2 years a person can't find another job? TWO YEARS!? Is that fair to everyone else who can't get benefits for 3 or 6 months because someone is "milking" it for 2 years?
Here the democrats are the party of YES. YES we will spend money we don't have to buy votes to stay in power.
armyofonerd... It is not unusual at all for people to be out of work for two years during this particular recession.
This is a global slowdown (as we all have heard repeatedly in the media), and it is the worst US recession since the great depression. It is being called a "depression."
For people in the middle of their careers, getting booted out of callous corporations, it is not good enough to say "just take any job."
These people have worked their asses off for years to earn some respect.
bloggerjoe... Maybe I'm from the old ways in thinking there is a difference between helping someone and supporting them. You honestly expect the working citizens of this country to pay unemployment benefits to citizens who are able to work, but refuse to change their career, move or take a job in a different field - and think that is fair?
Maybe those people working in "callous corporations" should have had a backup plan.
In two years, it's time for them to stand and earn some money.
ARMY! is it possible that we agree on something??? (seems like we've locked horns before)
my husband's friend in PA has been on unemployment for 22 weeks & hasn't spent 22 minutes looking for work. thought he'd get an extention. nope.
now what? I say too fucking bad! but rather than bitch about the govt not "helping" him I'm going to help him. because Americans do that... especially when they're not FORCED TO.
TheJoozie Not sure, however when I see citizens of this country who are able to work, but refuse to and expect another "entitlement" from the tax paying citizens of this country it makes me wonder what incentive they have to work. The ABC piece of a teacher expecting unemployment benefits to go past 2 years is hard to believe. At what point to people actually think they may have to return to the workforce to meet THEIR financial obligations. 104 weeks of collecting benefits!! Pathetic.
I expect a middle aged professional to act like an American. I expect them to get a job loading or unloading trucks at UPS during part of the day and then to work somewhere else during the day. I expect them to honor the financial agreements they made and not to simply sit back and wait for another handout from the taxpaying citizens of this country in the form of another gov't entitlement/handout.
Why is it that the states with most entitlements have the hardest time now?
I joined the Army making $576 per month (gross) and after the first 4 years, I was making $1000 per month - both of which are far below $450 per week or $1950 per month.
I worked for a college for $821 per month (gross) which again was far below the $1950 per month unemployment.
People need to be held accountable, the jobs are out there, they just require people to actually work instead of waiting for their "ideal" job to arrive.
@bloggerjoe I actually feel that especially in today's world, the emphasis on hard work to help pull yourself up is the most important think people can do.
Yes we are the melting pot, however we expect people to actually melt into our culture - not to demand our culture change to fit them. We should be allowing less H1B visas, and providing incentives to retrain our citizens to fill those higher paying jobs.
I'm not that old, I talking about the 80's and 90's - not the 50's.
ya know army... the egyptians had one thing right way back in the day. You may have been born on the steps of the pyramids but you're not a citizen until you prove that you are worthy as you reach adulthood.
And I don't want to hear about how Americans won't do this or that job. Have you seen "dirty jobs"???? I've never seen a mexican milk a camel.
I've never seen anyone milk a camel, however I would not want to. I've burned human waste in Desert Storm, I've cleaned out sheep shit from the underside of tanks in Germany, I've worked fast food and I've worked in harsh conditions. What I've seen about work is that people respect money when they earn it. When it is given to them, they only demand more. If our economy is to be fixed, all entitlements should be cut in half and all those who have been receiving them must stand and work.
yeah... look up dirty jobs camel farmers. I know the camel farmers on that show. They take the camels on the fair circut and charge people $10 or so to ride them. They also have turkey races. Really nice people....wacky people. The kind you love to drink beer with.
and that's what I've been saying.. it's like when you catch a nasty cold. If you would let it run it's course you would get well but instead you take nyquil and prolong it. It doesn't hurt as much but it doubles the length of time.
And you're totally right about earning and respecting money. If/when the rest of the world stops lending us money I bet the spending comes to a grinding halt.
armyofonerd... The problem is the layoffs in the US are not necessarily the "bad apples." They are people who are politically targeted, or the quiet workers who won't make a fuss, or the 50yr old who is viewed as being "stale and expensive."
When a good person has worked their ass off for 20 yrs, been a loyal employee, then gets thrown in the gutter by a corrupt govt during a global recession... they have a right to be pissed.
These people have paid INTO UI for years... don't blame them.
bloggerjoe . . My biggest issue is with those 35 and under collecting this or those simply waiting for such a specific job that re-training would be a better option. I agree for those 40+ year olds who have paid into the system, they have fallen on hard times and need some help - however helping someone is far different that supporting them.
A "loyal" employee has had little value for 10+ years. Each and every employee should always be looking for an opportunity instead of reacting.
@ bloggerjoe- when companies cut salaries people FLIP OUT. Rather than being happy they still have a job they rant about how they're entitled. Times are tough all over and that includes the corporations. California has a HUGE tax rate on the "rich" and the "corp fat cats" and it's only making them leave. And I can tell you as a business owner, I am only willing to cut MY pay by so much just out of the goodness of my heart. Once it goes beyond that, someone's out.
@TheJoozie Yeah I hear ya. People do tend to react badly to paycuts.
But I went through a few paycuts, and other cost saving measures, and I was happy to still have my job. People just need to get their heads screwed on right.
A local corporation near me just let go a few hundred people, and that has killed the mom and pop businesses in the area i.e. drycleaner, sport shop, restaurant, etc. Now the whole area is dead.
The company could have retained those people on a cut wage.
right... but check this out. the guy I know on unemployment sitting on his ass.. his hours were cut, then pay was cut, then busniness closed. he got unemployment based on his higher earnings. unemployment paid more than when he lost his job! so... he thought to sit on his ass
@TheJoozie I know what you mean. There will always be an element in society that milks it.
But I doubt the fellow made much to begin with, because UI is maxed out at $1800/mo.
Consider that a 1bdrm apt in Calif can run you $1500. and a bare bones health plan is $200. the UI is pretty much spent, and we haven't even gotten to things like food, phone bill, electricity etc.
Meanwhile, how much "milking" have the politicians, bankers, credit companies etc been doing while our backs were turned?
yes blogger, I hear ya on the California rent. I live in one of the most expensive areas of the country and unemployment alone wouldn't cut it, however California will also give you cash aid, food stamps etc.
The guy I know is in PA. His hours and wages were cut before closing the business and UI looked back to the previous quarter. $1800 a month will get you pretty far in PA if you don't have a bunch of bills.
@bloggerjoe You mention an apartment in Calif @ $1500 - my question is if you can't afford that type of rent, why would anyone "expect" to be able to remain there on UI? If you can't afford that rent, then move to a different location. You will not find that type of excessive rent in the South or the rural areas of this country.
I agree with the "milking" from the politicians - hell, have you seen Rangel and many others in the news - I expected Pelosi to stand for what was right.
army, pelosi won't stand for anything. she's a ding bat and I've never seen crazy like I do in her eyes.
I live 1/2 a block from the beach in orange county calif. I have a 2 bedroom with garage and pay $1425. I assure you that if we became unemployed we wouldn't even consider staying here.
We're moving away soon though. Bought a second piece of property and are moving to it. being self employed I can work anywhere and my pay doesn't change but it will go much farther there than here.
TheJoozie - wow, you mean you have a plan. A working plan in place should something happen to your income. What a "new" idea, instand of waiting for a "bailout", you have in place a plan should something change.
Man, I don't know how you live each and every day surrounded by those in public office there who feel it is the responsibility at each and every government level to provide any and all means to the citizens of this country.
well here's why the govt feels this way... THEY AREN'T PAYING THE BILL EITHER!
most of the people running this vaudville show haven't paid their own taxes. Why not give MY money away?
Yes, there's a plan. Imagine that!!! I've got a plan but I don't have enough in savings to make me feel at ease. I'm on commission and won't lose my job but I'd like to have a year tucked away to be safe. What if I get sick? I have aflac too though. ; )
An excellent point about the collateral damage of job losses [ or the sudden cessation of unemployment benefits]; local business get hurt and sometimes have to lay people off as a consequence. This is why that portion of the stimulus bill that went to the states to protect jobs [ teachers, state police officers etc] was so important, as the ripple effect of unemployment can be so disaterous to the business community and those who are still employed by these businesses.
Well, Joozie, it must be warm and comfortable in your cave. Having no contact with the world outside your little world is the only possible explanation for your ignorance. 6 million Americans lost their jobs before Obama [ 'black man is given the worst job in America'] took office and lost their health care benefits in the process. By the way, are you having trouble finding new employees these days?
@armyofonerd It should be noted that there is a considerable price tag attached to not passing this bill, as well. Even Bunning concedes benefits will eventually be extended - retroactively - and the states will pick up the tab for the added administrative costs. The furloughed highway inspectors pay taxes, as do the construction workers currently sitting at home. No wages = no payroll taxes. Not to mention the cost to families who can't afford to have their benefits delayed. There's more, too
@makeitatriple I understand this bill will pass. But I also understand that time have got to get tought to pull this country up by its boot straps. Spending money from one credit card to pay for another credit card would seem foolish to the citizens of this country, and yet that is what our gov't is doing. This is a republican & democratic problem.
This psychologically sightless senator is using semantics to obstruct progress, just like most Republicans of today, a classic example of the kind of "No" position Brack Obama mentioned in his State of the Union address. His ruling has to be overturned, or else the Republicans will start getting bamed fr this recession.
The ones who should be crucified are those who would not accept an amendment to use unallocated funds from the Stimulus funds. In other words, he is saying that we need to have a way to PAY for this, just as Pay as You go states. If Congress keeps spending money without a way to PAY for it, many, many more will become unemployed. Congress is out of control! We'll likely go bankrupt this year!
Is that TRUE and verifiable? If it IS, then shame on Bunning!
It still doesn't change the fact that Congress must abide by it's own Pay Go rules. They need to figure out how to finance their out of control spending or the American dollar will fail - SOON. If the government can't figure out how to pay for a $10B bill, what will prevent them from spending on their bigger initiatives without figuring out how to PAY for them?
@tolynette PayGo legislation doesn't apply to emergency funding measures. In addition, Bunning's obstruction will end up costing more taxpayer money, as the bill will pass and taxpayers will be on the hook for the $10 billion plus costs incurred by the delay
really enjoyed it..

HA! Bastiat did say that once Legal Plunder was started in a country that it would build into a system, where everyone would be going after a piece of the government pie. It wouldn't matter if the piece of the pie was coming from their own pockets or their neighbors pockets. I would say that most Americans participate in the Legal Plunder that Bastiat warned about.
kev1776 1 year ago
In The Law, written 1848, Bastiat, a French legislator, said that America had the greatest system of government in the world, because we didn't have a system of "Legal Plunder", such as France had. Legal plunder was when government had the power to take by "legal force" from one citizen to give to another or to grant citizens privileges over other citizens. Our Constitution did not allow for Legal plunder. Of course, the flaw Bastiat said America did have was slavery.

Its not like these are wellfare people. This is unemployment. People who have had a job and did not choose to leave it. They must look for a job to get their benefits...which is just 1200 dollars a month. If you take this money away, these millions of people will have no money to spend and the economy will be worse.
spinnersmetal 1 year ago
@spinnersmetal, and 1200 is barely enough to survive on at all. People should have a little bit to spend on their sanity as well, which would be entertainment. A night out for the kids, a date with the girlfriend, a night out with your buds. Or just enjoying a day in, ordering a pizza, etc. Or buying a little weed, or a couple brews.
But 90% at least of the money goes to basic survival in this country, if not all of it. While still having to sell your possesions to stay afloat. etc.

I don't call it "income" I call it "welfare" because they didn't work for it plus SOME of those unemployed are just spending those checks for alcohol, and something else.
I know there are pros and cons on blocking jobless benefits.
I also know that there are pros and cons in letting those jobless benefits continue.
KodaJosh098 1 year ago
@KodaJosh098 Inaccurate statement. First off, Unemployment benefits are NOT welfare at all! It is actually insurance, and the only way one can collect it is to have worked at some point. If someone has paid for this insurance for 10, 20 or even more than 30 years, what is wrong with them collecting in a time of loss? It's just like if someone's house burns down, they collect homeowner's insurance money. Plus, the benefits r usually 1/2 of what the person was making working!
TheCircle000 1 year ago
@KodaJosh098
You're an idiot. If they want to spend that money on alcohol, than they can. Its THEIR money. To even qualify for it, you had to of invested in it. Its INSURANCE not WELFARE. Do you understand the basic differences?
I'm guessing not.

I JUST SENT THIS EMAIL TO SENATOR BUNNING:
Dear Senator:
As an American, I am deeply concerned by your decision to pursue charges against a citizen, Mr. Bruce Shore, who legitimately expressed his deep offense at your callous attitude towards Americans in his position, and your participation in the obstructionist politics which have brought your party to a low of disgrace with few precedents in the affairs of our nation -
Enantiodromialist 1 year ago 2
@Enantiodromialist - conduct which has led a distinguished Governor, among many others, to quite rightly level charges of sedition.
I, of course, need not add that none of the actions of Mr. Shore compare to the daily roar of unpatriotic, anti-American hatred of our President, of our forms of government, and of the belief in our founding principles shared by the vast majority of Americans,
Enantiodromialist 1 year ago
@Enantiodromialist - which many of those who share your party and ideological affiliation seem to feel themselves entitled to express with impunity.
Among this roar of un-Americanism, there is to be found, quite prominently - as is well known - the basest form of treasonous, neo-Confederate sentiment.

However that is not a reason to not pay it out.
kd5icr1967 1 year ago
@kd5icr- finally someone understands! Employees do pay into it but not even a fraction of what the business pays and people don't realize that the business pays that unemployment when the employee starts collecting.
Ever had to fight your previous employer FOR your unemployment? THAT'S why employers fight it. And the state picks up part of the tab as well. UI tax on a paycheck is TINY! When I made $1000 a week something like $8 went to UI.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
I made the same as you as a truck driver but the economy is so slow companies can pick and chose who they hire, It will turn around soon
kd5icr1967 1 year ago
I don't make that anymore, I became self employed and work far less for far more. But that's what I was saying, the employer tries to fight someone getting unemployment because they are the ones that pay for it. Someone else always ultimately decides who wins that money.
Small business employs 70% of the population. If I can't afford to pay you for working how can I afford to pay you for not working?
I've gotten unemployment for a total of 6 weeks in my life and it was by choice.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
I think it will turn around but sometimes people have to reinvent themselves and find a marketable skill that they aren't used to in order to make ends meet. People have been doing it for centuries!
If you want a job and you're articulate and can deal with the public there ARE jobs out there. Sometimes it's thankless but a telemarketer for example can make a GOOD living b/c all salesmen need to get in front of a customer and they pay dearly for it most of the time.
TheJoozie 1 year ago

"Sometimes it's thankless but a telemarketer for example can make a GOOD living b/c all salesmen need to get in front of a customer and they pay dearly for it most of the time. "
Yeah, a great job? Why don't you tell people to put on hot pants and walk the streets? That is a high paying honest job too.
If that is all that the conservatives can offer then their global plan sucks like their party.
ChicagoJoe57 1 year ago
I, as an example had been on the phones for the better part of my life then went into outside sales. Self employed outside sales. I paid $35 an hour for telemarketing services! Cash, up front for 100 hour blocks!
If actual unemployment is around 20%, there's 80% still working & not all of those people are broke... and they're still buying plenty. Trust me.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
To pass by Unanimous Consent means we will not know who voted for or against. Additionally, why is it just now being brought up. Congress has know the expiration date of the Unemployment relief program since they passed the original. And finally, what happened to the pay as you go bill passed and why not take money from other things like Tarp or other bail out money that was repaid or not used?

An American Hero? A hero is someone who stands on principle, someone who always follows their beliefs. Bunning has repeatedly voted for bills that have increased the federal budget without a simultaneous mechanism for rectifying the cost. Now, months from retirement [ as his approval ratings in Kentucky have tanked,[ and this in an extremely conservative state] the demented old pig claims to stand on 'principle'. What this video does not show is the fact that Bunning asked for a straight up or down vote and the democrats refused to allow this - why?
They had 59 democrats and only 40 republicans - and yet the democrats refused to allow a simple up or down vote to move forward.
Nothing like the democrats holding up progress and then trying to make it seem like it was a republican - nice try . . . . . not.

Bunning is lucky he's retiring from the senate this year; with unemployment in KY at around 10%, this move won't make him very popular at home. I understand the point he's trying to make, but he really ought to pick his battles more carefully. Objecting to this bill at this time just makes him look like a dick
makeitatriple 1 year ago
Thank you Senator Bunning. A leader is one who is willing to stand when others refuse to. No matter how good the bill is, if you refuse to show how it will be paid for then it is not a good bill. Why can't these democrats simply show how this bill will be paid for or cut funds from somewhere else?
We the citizens of this country must follow our budget on a monthly basis, but for some reason these democrats in office seem irritated when we expect them to do the same. How typical.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
Yes, we must give more money for wars, more money to fight abortions, more money to make sure everyone owns a gun, more money to fight the homosexual agenda. We must not give money to the poor and needy because that is their fault. We must not provide health care to those that need it. We must not provide unemployment benefits to lazy unemployed people with children. If they knock on your door for food, shoot them with the guns the gun lobby had our government pay for.
ch1aka2 1 year ago
No, everyone has a right to own a gun, however should they actually want a gun then they have to purchase it without my money - that is the difference between a republican and democrat. A democrat would say that owning a gun is your right, and we the taxpayers are required to purchase a gun for you.
If you give away money, people will not work for it.
I guess we should also bailout every failing business and give CEO bonuses, just like Obama/democrats did with the GM CEO; 1 million/1month
armyofonerd 1 year ago
@armyofonerd This is a temporary measure, not a permanent allocation of funds. Paygo legislation does not apply to emergency funding. This HR bill is necessary to keep people's ui assistance funded, as well as a plethora of public highway projects which will otherwise be shut down. Emergency spending bills were the means by which the Bush adm. secured funding for the middle east wars - and those bills were each worth $100 billion or more, not the $10 billion now being sought
makeitatriple 1 year ago
@makeitatriple I don't care what kind of measure it is, if those in public office can't show where the money will come from, how it will be funded or cut another "entitlement" to pay for this - then I agree - it should not be enacted.
What did people do 50, 75, 100 or 150 years ago do - did they wait around for another gov't handout - did they take 9 months to find another job?!
Come on people, move to where the jobs are, change trades - but don't demand others pay for your "benefit".
armyofonerd 1 year ago
@armyofonerd
If you own a home, you can't just pick up and move!
TresJolie7 1 year ago
@TresJolie&
You can change your trade.
You can get two part time jobs to help meet your financial responsibility.
You could be re-trained into another field.
However, sitting, waiting or holding out until your original field/job returns may not be possible, nor should the taxpaying citizens of this country continue to give away benefits while people are allowed to do so.
Many people work for less for job security and health benefits, we should not be punished for doing so.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
@armyofonerd We have unemployment benefits for a reason. 100 years ago people would have to steal or starve when no jobs were available. I've been gainfully employed for well over a decade, making between 40k and 90k a year, and have paid plenty into the benefit system, just like many of the currently unemployed. I've taken a couple of part-time jobs now, because my ui benefit is not enough to pay my bills, but times are tough, and not everyone can find the work. A little humanity, please
makeitatriple 1 year ago
@makeitatriple Yes we have those benefits, but for how many months do you want these to continue, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 2 years!!? I have humanity, I've worked for a furniture repo place, loading trucks for UPS and fast food. I know "poor", but making $25K or $30K is not poor. It is one thing to work and earn those benefits, however it is something far different to simply give those benefits away to those who can work, but refuse to because they would make less.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
@armyofonerd Given the paltry amount paid by ui, and the current level of unemployment, it's likely very few people are choosing to remain unemployed. You'd be hard pressed to find a job that pays less than ui. And again, Bunning really needs to pick his battles more carefully. Choosing to now make a stand (on the backs of the unemployed) is pretty callous
makeitatriple 1 year ago
@makeitatriple I just read where a teacher in Texas has been receiving ui for 2 years. Two YEARS!!!!! Is this what the program was intended for? Are you telling me that in 2 years a person can't find another job? TWO YEARS!? Is that fair to everyone else who can't get benefits for 3 or 6 months because someone is "milking" it for 2 years?
Here the democrats are the party of YES. YES we will spend money we don't have to buy votes to stay in power.
TWO YEARS, are you serious?
armyofonerd 1 year ago
armyofonerd...
These people have worked their asses off for years to earn some respect.
bloggerjoe 1 year ago
bloggerjoe...
In two years, it's time for them to stand and earn some money.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
ARMY! is it possible that we agree on something??? (seems like we've locked horns before)
my husband's friend in PA has been on unemployment for 22 weeks & hasn't spent 22 minutes looking for work. thought he'd get an extention. nope.
now what? I say too fucking bad! but rather than bitch about the govt not "helping" him I'm going to help him. because Americans do that... especially when they're not FORCED TO.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
TheJoozie Not sure, however when I see citizens of this country who are able to work, but refuse to and expect another "entitlement" from the tax paying citizens of this country it makes me wonder what incentive they have to work. The ABC piece of a teacher expecting unemployment benefits to go past 2 years is hard to believe. At what point to people actually think they may have to return to the workforce to meet THEIR financial obligations. 104 weeks of collecting benefits!! Pathetic.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
@armyofonerd Sates like Calif have been suffering badly and corps have tossed thousands into the gutter.
Do you really expect a middle aged professional to go fill up a job app at Subway or The Gap???
The MAX anybody can get on UI is $450/wk, and you have to QUALIFY for that. You ever tried living on that?
Corporations could save just as much through paycuts rather than betraying loyal employees.
Big corps like Booz Allen Hamilton have hundreds of open reqs... so why don't they HIRE??
bloggerjoe 1 year ago
@bloggerjoe
Why is it that the states with most entitlements have the hardest time now?
armyofonerd 1 year ago
@bloggerjoe
I joined the Army making $576 per month (gross) and after the first 4 years, I was making $1000 per month - both of which are far below $450 per week or $1950 per month.
I worked for a college for $821 per month (gross) which again was far below the $1950 per month unemployment.
People need to be held accountable, the jobs are out there, they just require people to actually work instead of waiting for their "ideal" job to arrive.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
@armyofonerd Well, no offense... I do understand your point of view, but I think it is just not reflective of today's world.
The USA is a melting pot of cultures with a huge percentage of professional workers brought in over the last 15yrs or more on H1B visas.
It's just not the old days anymore.
Also, corporations have been outsourcing jobs offshore for years, limiting the prospects of the jobseeker.
And places like Starbucks are looking for kids, not middle managers with corporate resumes.
bloggerjoe 1 year ago
@bloggerjoe I actually feel that especially in today's world, the emphasis on hard work to help pull yourself up is the most important think people can do.
Yes we are the melting pot, however we expect people to actually melt into our culture - not to demand our culture change to fit them. We should be allowing less H1B visas, and providing incentives to retrain our citizens to fill those higher paying jobs.
I'm not that old, I talking about the 80's and 90's - not the 50's.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
ya know army... the egyptians had one thing right way back in the day. You may have been born on the steps of the pyramids but you're not a citizen until you prove that you are worthy as you reach adulthood.
And I don't want to hear about how Americans won't do this or that job. Have you seen "dirty jobs"???? I've never seen a mexican milk a camel.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
I've never seen anyone milk a camel, however I would not want to. I've burned human waste in Desert Storm, I've cleaned out sheep shit from the underside of tanks in Germany, I've worked fast food and I've worked in harsh conditions. What I've seen about work is that people respect money when they earn it. When it is given to them, they only demand more. If our economy is to be fixed, all entitlements should be cut in half and all those who have been receiving them must stand and work.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
AMEN AMEN AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah... look up dirty jobs camel farmers. I know the camel farmers on that show. They take the camels on the fair circut and charge people $10 or so to ride them. They also have turkey races. Really nice people....wacky people. The kind you love to drink beer with.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
and that's what I've been saying.. it's like when you catch a nasty cold. If you would let it run it's course you would get well but instead you take nyquil and prolong it. It doesn't hurt as much but it doubles the length of time.
And you're totally right about earning and respecting money. If/when the rest of the world stops lending us money I bet the spending comes to a grinding halt.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
armyofonerd...
These people have paid INTO UI for years... don't blame them.
bloggerjoe 1 year ago
bloggerjoe .
Each and every employee should always be looking for an opportunity instead of reacting.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
@ bloggerjoe- when companies cut salaries people FLIP OUT. Rather than being happy they still have a job they rant about how they're entitled. Times are tough all over and that includes the corporations. California has a HUGE tax rate on the "rich" and the "corp fat cats" and it's only making them leave. And I can tell you as a business owner, I am only willing to cut MY pay by so much just out of the goodness of my heart. Once it goes beyond that, someone's out.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
@TheJoozie Yeah I hear ya. People do tend to react badly to paycuts.
But I went through a few paycuts, and other cost saving measures, and I was happy to still have my job. People just need to get their heads screwed on right.
A local corporation near me just let go a few hundred people, and that has killed the mom and pop businesses in the area i.e. drycleaner, sport shop, restaurant, etc. Now the whole area is dead.
The company could have retained those people on a cut wage.
bloggerjoe 1 year ago
right... but check this out. the guy I know on unemployment sitting on his ass.. his hours were cut, then pay was cut, then busniness closed. he got unemployment based on his higher earnings. unemployment paid more than when he lost his job! so... he thought to sit on his ass
TheJoozie 1 year ago
@TheJoozie I know what you mean. There will always be an element in society that milks it.
But I doubt the fellow made much to begin with, because UI is maxed out at $1800/mo.
Consider that a 1bdrm apt in Calif can run you $1500. and a bare bones health plan is $200. the UI is pretty much spent, and we haven't even gotten to things like food, phone bill, electricity etc.
Meanwhile, how much "milking" have the politicians, bankers, credit companies etc been doing while our backs were turned?
bloggerjoe 1 year ago
yes blogger, I hear ya on the California rent.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
@bloggerjoe You mention an apartment in Calif @ $1500 - my question is if you can't afford that type of rent, why would anyone "expect" to be able to remain there on UI? If you can't afford that rent, then move to a different location. You will not find that type of excessive rent in the South or the rural areas of this country.
I agree with the "milking" from the politicians - hell, have you seen Rangel and many others in the news - I expected Pelosi to stand for what was right.
armyofonerd 1 year ago
army, pelosi won't stand for anything. she's a ding bat and I've never seen crazy like I do in her eyes.
TheJoozie 1 year ago
TheJoozie - wow, you mean you have a plan. A working plan in place should something happen to your income. What a "new" idea, instand of waiting for a "bailout", you have in place a plan should something change.

most of the people running this vaudville show haven't paid their own taxes. Why not give MY money away?
Yes, there's a plan. Imagine that!!! I've got a plan but I don't have enough in savings to make me feel at ease. I'm on commission and won't lose my job but I'd like to have a year tucked away to be safe. What if I get sick? I have aflac too though. ; )
TheJoozie 1 year ago
An excellent point about the collateral damage of job losses [ or the sudden cessation of unemployment benefits]; local business get hurt and sometimes have to lay people off as a consequence. This is why that portion of the stimulus bill that went to the states to protect jobs [ teachers, state police officers etc] was so important, as the ripple effect of unemployment can be so disaterous to the business community and those who are still employed by these businesses.
molloyxx1 1 year ago
Well, Joozie, it must be warm and comfortable in your cave. Having no contact with the world outside your little world is the only possible explanation for your ignorance. 6 million Americans lost their jobs before Obama [ 'black man is given the worst job in America'] took office and lost their health care benefits in the process. By the way, are you having trouble finding new employees these days?
molloyxx1 1 year ago
@armyofonerd It should be noted that there is a considerable price tag attached to not passing this bill, as well. Even Bunning concedes benefits will eventually be extended - retroactively - and the states will pick up the tab for the added administrative costs. The furloughed highway inspectors pay taxes, as do the construction workers currently sitting at home. No wages = no payroll taxes. Not to mention the cost to families who can't afford to have their benefits delayed. There's more, too
makeitatriple 1 year ago
@makeitatriple I understand this bill will pass. But I also understand that time have got to get tought to pull this country up by its boot straps. Spending money from one credit card to pay for another credit card would seem foolish to the citizens of this country, and yet that is what our gov't is doing. This is a republican & democratic problem.

We'll likely go bankrupt this year!

wrong... the bill would pass if they put those Corporate Tax breaks back in...that is what he has told his friends...the average American be damned
AmericanResponses 1 year ago
Is that TRUE and verifiable? If it IS, then shame on Bunning!
It still doesn't change the fact that Congress must abide by it's own Pay Go rules. They need to figure out how to finance their out of control spending or the American dollar will fail - SOON. If the government can't figure out how to pay for a $10B bill, what will prevent them from spending on their bigger initiatives without figuring out how to PAY for them?
tolynette 1 year ago
@tolynette PayGo legislation doesn't apply to emergency funding measures. In addition, Bunning's obstruction will end up costing more taxpayer money, as the bill will pass and taxpayers will be on the hook for the $10 billion plus costs incurred by the delay
