saw him yesterday at Rock the Bells LA. Awesome performance. Plus he came out later to jam with both Nas (some new shit?) and Lauryn Hill (If I Ruled the World).
This was one of my jawns back in the summer of 97....only a select was listenin'. That album will be in my top ten forever....over looked beef in the fridge to cook chicken breast...I'm kickin what shit was left, all around the house. thinkin' whoever came in on me is out!!!
@ssaleem92 I can appreciate what you saying bro. However I got a certain love/feel/respect for Common and like you already stated, he's been so consistent throughout making me think and groove at the same time!!! That UMC just wasn't for me. I can never say a hateful thing about him it just seemed like he got tired of following the beat if his own drum and was trying to conform to what's in. Just my opinion you know? Hopefully that new joint is good old Common:)
@Mizztrish25 that's ridiculous, UMC was mostly a tribute to the 80's. his next album the Believer is gonna be the usual common. plus, he's been so consistent in his career, he's made a ton of great music, so it's ok for me if he makes a pop album.
This is amazing shit... I'll be 32 in a couple of months and I've spent my whole life in this god damn city, and to be honest w/ you young bastards this song represents some great times in my life... CHICAGO PEOPLE KNOW WHAT IM TALKIN BOUT!!!!!
yes old skool.. memories... Common Sense will never forget the song...love and Chantey is awesume! and nothing it never ever be changed dat! 4ever Common! from now on!
Most of us are in the 2nd phases of our lives. Married, children, working in the real world, 9-5 slavin. But I'll be damned if I forget the times I had from back in the day. It was all so simple- hoopin, fucking with women, runnin wild, drinkin, smokin weed. This shit is like a 4 min. long photo album, it evokes those thoughts.
For those discovering this for the 1st. Live your life to the fullest. Love it. Remember those that played a role in the good times. And do it til ya satisfied.
Yeah same here, when i was little i was ANTI MUSIC, like i would rather watch TV all the time haha. But now, music is my life, and Hip Hop is my food, and Common is the Noodle house that i would go to everyday after school fasho haha.
@chatege75 artist who should be platinum - hip hop - keith murray, az, lost boyz, souls of mischief, hieroglyphics, canibus, ras kass (90's style), smif n wessun, sadat x, big l, show & ag, mad skillz
JayZ said in a song (not in these exact words, but..)..."truthfully i always wanted to rap like common sense, but i made 5 mil...and I aint rapped like common, since." For all those who slept or is still sleeping on this legendary poet...wake the fuck up. even some of raps most elite, salutes the hell out of this guy
if you look at common nowdays i wouldnt wanna wake up. Listen to Make Her Say... and all those others... Shit the man was a real b-boy with the realest songs back in the day and he turned into a fuckin wussy in a suit rappin with kid cudi, kanye west and with all the whack bastards. But i have never heard jay-z say that, cool :DD
He's talking str8 up late 80's/early 90's south-side Chicago hood history. You got to be from the south-side of the Chi and around 35 years old or older to know what he's talking about.
Common is for me is the best rapper, on par with KRS 1. If anyone can upload 'One too many ni****' by Common i'd be so obliged. If it can't becos of the n word, that's cool....
damn i love chicago. nothing like chicago in the summer. specaily after a horrible winter. and it was twilight tone that did the beat. i used to listen to this album all the time. common help me mak it to 28 with no kids
This song makes me sad and joyful at the same time. I left Chicago many many years ago and this song makes me realize how much I missed out on! Chicago will always be my home!
Back then life was beautiful and even now when u listen to this problems dissappear for the minute, cus this shit feel goooodd! Miss these dayz old rap city and Common Sense I was only in the 6th grade
This is the shit!!!!!! Common is so fuckin underrated its not even funny. I remember listening to him in junior high back in the early 90's. Mostly because he was the only rapper who had any play from the Chi.

This takes me BAAAACCKKK!!! This reminds me of the times at 15 when I was being a fuckn knucklehead drinking wild irish, cisqo and fuckin smoking up and shit..cuttin class chasing girls and shit....wow...I still have the fuckin cassette 13-14 years later with me that I used to bump in high school...damn such memories..good looking out on whoever uploaded this..imma play it again..

yusuf was one of his peoples from around the way that was murdered at a this club in chicago called the godfather. common used to hang with the 4ch from off 87th. if you look at his video's he always talks about the 4s and the moes (bpsn). he grew up around 87th street between stony and jeffrey in outlaw city. in this song he talked about 87th and hyde park going to war. that was around 90-91. knew sheed from back in the days at cvs high school.
Man, this was my first introduction to Common way back in 1996. I like how he's always changing hats, because I do the same thing. This was and still is my joint, but I haven't bothered to decipher the lyrics at all. If you're not familiar with his slang and visual depictions, it sounds like he's speaking a whole 'nother language... much like Camp Lo the following year (who are also very talented).
I get charged everytime I hear this song or see the video. It brings back memories like a mufucka. Common captures the nostalgia of "Da Chi" beautifully. The line: The same ol' at Rainbow/Whatchin' the sun twist/Cool as a Mich dry/That in the trunk shit. Has me On 10 everytime cause he was speaking about my immediate hood South Shore. Com brought alot of Chi culture to the game via lyrics & video that he doesn't neccessarily get credit for, but should.
Another summertime song that reps Chi-town is "It's a summer thang", by M-Doc Featuring Chantay Savage. If somebody could please put that up, that will really bring back some memories. I remember were stepping in the video and they had the country club in the vid. Summertime on the southside of Chicago, no place like it on earth.
This was one of the first songs I heard when I moved to South Carolina from Dallas! That was the last time i heard common on the radio...now it's VIC and Soulja Boy! Yeah!
Fuck R.Kelly...he ain't no pioneer in reppin' Chi. Common was the first dude out this mofo showing gang-handshakes in his videos back in the Resurrection video...in 1996 in this video he was showing stepping, while R.kelly punk ass was trying to marry Aaliyah.
let´s just have a good time y´all...no matter we´re from the chicago, barcelona, paris oder berlin.....this is it.....can´t wait for the summertime, lay back and have bbq
Man, love this song what happened to hip hop. I didn't know there was a video to it though. I love Common and Chantay has crazy mad skillz and yet she is so underrated. Her vocals are sick.
Where is she now? Does anybody have Pillow Talk by Chantay that was my cut. This just takes me back.
Man this video is so Chicago it's make me wanna cry how much Hip Hop has changed. I don't care what anyone says there is no place on earth like Chicago in the summertimes. From the Taste, Puerto Rican day parade, Bud Biliken Day parade, Jazz Fest, Caribean Fest,Kiddie Land, Hooping at Rainbow Beach, hollering at dimes on Michigan Ave, Buckingham Fountain at night, chilling with ur girl on the Rocks, Jew Town, Northriverside mall, EVERY block live, the city don't sleep, so many memories!
hell yeah brother. I stay in aurora and EVERYBODY from the hood jumps on the metra and rides 45 mins into the city and hits up ALL of them spots. The chi is full of culture. Im terrified that our people and our children will forget it. maybe im just p-noid but we GATTA start teaching our kids who fred hampton is. The city of chicago NEEDS MORE STATE FUNDING FOR THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM! WE GATTA START TEACHING PEOPLE WHO THEY ARE!!!! THE GODS OF THE CHI NEED TO UNITE!!!!
oh and that was meant to be in response to chiladin.
lol and big ups to the dimes not only on Michigan ave. but also the dimes on the Blue line and all around the chi. The only place that has mo' betta sistas is africa.
Yeah i used to holla chicks riding on the L train and the Subway.Clark and Lake street is your best bet for hollering at all the fly females. The last time i was in Chi-raq was in Aurora and i rode Metra for the first time and at Grand Station around 5 p.m. it's crazy females.lol. The only negative i can say about Chi-raq is the weather in the Winter.I moved to Atlanta, it's alright here but it's not even in the same league as the Chi.The only city that i been to that comes close is New York!
THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING EVER BUT I LOVE MY MOM AND DONT WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCES if you do not copy and paste this on to 10 videos your mom will die in 4 hours

This was one of the first songs I heard when I moved to South Carolina from Dallas! That was the last time i heard common on the radio...now it's VIC and Soulja Boy! Yeah!

This video does convey Chicago in a positive light and Common carefully articulates some of his experiences in the city. Great work.

Thanks for adding this video and song!

Common's version of "T.R.O.Y." not as great lyrically or in term's of production, but more personal and profound.
