Square hips is where you are keeping your hips forward and aligned. So she is saying to keep your hips and upper torso pointing in the direction of the leg you have infront of you... Not to the side (hers would be toward the camera...dont do that. stay looking forward. Not to the side.) Hope I helped! :)
Yeah, I remember this video back in 07. I loved it! I havent seen this in 3years! This is really cool that I found it. I had to do a google search for it. It was on my favorite videos playlist back then, I clicked on it here earlier this week, to take a trip back in time, so to speak, and the video was "private" or something under FordModels channel. my wife is awesome at yoga, but I have to admit, she's not at your level. She can dance her butt off though!
i really dislike it when the cameraman focuses on the face instead of the whole routine.. i need to see how it's done, not what her face looks like when she's speaking.. just saying.. nway, thanks tara!
question: how long does it take to build up flexibility usually?
and... have you ever considered changing your name to 'Rubber Woman'? legend has it you once jumped off the empire state building and bounced all the way back up to the top again.
I've only ever been able to do the side split properly but I think thats because it's the one that I was trained in during my brief stint in gymnastics. It looks like Tara's routine is the best bet since it builds up gradually. There are probably exercises to build up to either though. I'd say the main thing once you get beyond the age of 15-16 is patience. Flexibility doesn't come to growed ups overnight
Tara Stiles thanks for these videos. You are very beautiful. You have pretty legs. I have never done yoga but i ve learned a ton from your videos. I can't and never will do splits (Manly reasons) but i have done a few of your stretches.
In martial arts, we learned the splits by sitting in front of the TV for 30-60 min a day with our legs spread out as wide as "comfortably" possible & using weights to hold your feet in place. After a few mins, your mind's distracted from the pain. Every 2 days, you force yourself to go an 1/8 or 1/4 of an inch wider. The increase is so gradual, you don't really notice but within 3-4 mths, you're there.
(Note: This was for straddle splits rather than the "right: splits shown in your vid)
@frazzzer8888 I find the middle split to be the hardest split. For me, I have been doing the stretches everyday nonstop for roughly 11 months now, and only my middle split isn't down since i was absentminded about forcing and ignored the pain the whole time...so I am back to square one. I find myself a lot better if I have done relaxed stretches and not "forcing", which is what I currently do.
Oh wow, good timing.. I saw this video on my subscriptions list and thought "i better ask for some stretching tips". I guess I don't have to now.
I stretch for running before and after I workout (calfs, hams, quads) and hold it for about 60 seconds. Is this just loosening me up for exercise? Or is this good enough to increase my flexibility? I am guessing not because I am not really getting more flexible. :(
How long should you hold those stretches to become more flexible?
you won't know til you try. we guys can do the splits. I could as a kid but not anymore. could work up to it again I suppose but it would take a fair bit of work.

To make the exercise effective, Tara needs to bend her bottom infront of camera, side show isnt worth it :D

I've learned how to do these postures at my private yoga lessons. I enjoyed doing them. They do benefit flexibility.

I used to be able to do side splits as a kid. I could never do front splits. Is it possible to build that flexibility back?

Hm... your technique must be off, the man parts shouldn't really come into the equation. It's more the muscle connecting the legs to the torso.
Course if it hurts never force it, you could seriously hurt yourself!

is it easier to front split or side split?

Dude, are these videos from the 1980s?
Did you know that YouTube has this new fangled format called w i d e s c r e e n?
Ya, it's a 16:9 ratio, as opposed to your ancient video recorders 4:3 ratio.
Ohmmmmm, this is merely a suggestion.

I completely agree with you. I was not responsible for the direction or camera work though. :) this is a video I did 2 years ago with Ford models :)
