It wasnt JUST carcass for these people to eat, they were emotionally attached to them!! Even NANDO who suggested them to eat the dead, was reluctant to have his sister's dead body eaten. The character of Rafael (based on another survivor) DIED right at the end just a few days before their rescue because he endured the starvation up until then.

Apparently people who revert to cannibalism have gone through almost every other alternative, eating dead human meat is the last resort. I've heard of people being trapped who had to drink their own urine to survive and it worked. I feel so sorry for them to have even had to go that far to live.

Humans of today, though, are not necessarily representative of humans hundreds or thousands of years ago. @m2boy It's the Andes Mountains. Not the Rockies. No plants or animals for miles around the crash site. And what would you kill this hypothetical bear or rabbit with? Admittedly there was mention of a gun, but still, it's pretty boastful and arrogant to just say you'd go out and shoot something, especially when you'd have a hard time finding anything to shoot.
True, I don't know what starvation is... but I Do know comedy when I see it or hear it and meat is meat my friend. I have no qualms with cannibalism. As long as it is consensual.
Smoking at that altitude, yes, it's a bad idea, they can't breathe and get as much oxygen with such thin air. If you cook the meat, you lose a lot of the essentials nutrients. By drying it they were able to get more energy from it, even if it was hard to eat. Also, they had a very limited fuel supply. Once they cooked about three full meals, they'd have nothing left to burn anyways. Better save the fuel for more important times.

Human flesh is like all animal flesh in that it contains ALL essential nutrients provided that it is eaten raw. Since the living body contained all necessary nutrients for human to live the dead body does also. There are several essential nutrients, like omega-3 fats and vitamin B-12, that can only be naturally obtained by eating meat. Human flesh does not taste (apparently) unlike other raw meats such as pork and beef. You would probably not notice the taste in a starving situation like that.
I've done a report on the subject and I am also a survival instructor at a guiding/wilderness outfitter source. I've also had to spend a week (not much compared to these guys) alone in a freezing shelter with a limited supply of raw rabbit meat. It's not bad when dried. (I'm not trying to sound macho, just getting my point across)
Mate, I'm genuinely interested in the art of survival, and given the unfortunate experience like these guys, I'd do it, if it was a surviving necessity. I'm interested in many ways and have a great love for the outdoors, but that was where my survival instinct stopped! I'm keen to learn more, where can I do a survival course??

@DJSexLeopard And anyway, I confess I know little about wildlife in the Andes, but still, going by the internal logic of the film if nothing else, there just wasn't anything readily available as a food source due to where the plane landed. As can be seen, nothing but tons and tons of snow and rock for miles.

Humans of today, though, are not necessarily representative of humans hundreds or thousands of years ago. Ancient tribesmen for instance used to harsh lives are naturally hardier than humans used to closer knit societies with modern conveniences.

Admittedly there was mention of a gun, but still, it's pretty boastful and arrogant to just say you'd go out and shoot something, especially when you'd have a hard time finding anything to shoot.

Smoking at that altitude, yes, it's a bad idea, they can't breathe and get as much oxygen with such thin air. If you cook the meat, you lose a lot of the essentials nutrients. By drying it they were able to get more energy from it, even if it was hard to eat. Also, they had a very limited fuel supply. Once they cooked about three full meals, they'd have nothing left to burn anyways. Better save the fuel for more important times.

Thanks for this info, I'm curious... how do you know so much? The smoking thing is crazy in my book, the raw meat............ I'm afraid if I'm eating ass it's got to be cooked to kill the taste, although I never took into consideration the nutrients.... what are they in human 'beef'?

Human flesh is like all animal flesh in that it contains ALL essential nutrients provided that it is eaten raw. Since the living body contained all necessary nutrients for human to live the dead body does also. There are several essential nutrients, like omega-3 fats and vitamin B-12, that can only be naturally obtained by eating meat. Human flesh does not taste (apparently) unlike other raw meats such as pork and beef. You would probably not notice the taste in a starving situation like that.

I've done a report on the subject and I am also a survival instructor at a guiding/wilderness outfitter source. I've also had to spend a week (not much compared to these guys) alone in a freezing shelter with a limited supply of raw rabbit meat. It's not bad when dried. (I'm not trying to sound macho, just getting my point across)

Mate, I'm genuinely interested in the art of survival, and given the unfortunate experience like these guys, I'd do it, if it was a surviving necessity. I'm interested in many ways and have a great love for the outdoors, but that was where my survival instinct stopped! I'm keen to learn more, where can I do a survival course??

But why did they choose the butt of the people to eat? any reason? it looked all nasty and bloodly, Im not a eater of steak and on the rare ocasion i do, i like it chared black.just looking at bloodly steak makes me gag. i know that isn't a time to be choosy im just sayin. i think they did what they had to. but im still sick to my tummy over it.
