  • This is such horse$hit. "property taxes will go up" is code for "I don't want white neighbors." 1. News flash, black people had been moving out of that area at an accelerating pace since the 1950s. Nothing there has changed. 2. Property taxes don't go up unless your house gets reasessed. That only happens if you sell, if you refinance or if you make major renovations. 3. If you bought a house for $25k and you sell it for $250k shouldn't the buyer be the one complaining about gentrification?

  • Oh well. Natural selection. As a Hosp of UPenn employee, I enjoy working there and living in nice areas. If people can't afford it, they need to move.

  • But , guess what tha evil that men do, will result in nuthin pretty. The followers of Shaton are going to have to answer to the one and only. Check out what is going on in the different states, with the Badd weather. I am going to stop for now, I dont want to give too much food at one time... I will leave u with this quote from the words of the Great Chuck D.... Don't tell me that u undrstand , til u hear the man....Don't blv the hype... Peace

  • Watch out my ppl, they will piss in your face and tell u it is raining. Let them find out u cannot pay your taxes, they will take your fuckin house in a heartbeat, shit is by design. Crime in your hood, they cld really stop it if they wanted too, but they (city govt) don't gv a fuck, wait and see when the other ppl move in, they are gone Gaffle up N*gg*s up like the slave trade. I used the N word in the true sense of what the word means. I love my ppl, but we r watchng our Rims spinning.

  • And, fuck all that south of center city, just say South Philly, they are also doing it in parts of West PHilly down the bottom, which is known as University City, the Mayor and all those other crooked ass snakes in city government let the University of Penn do what ever....And you know what the funny part is, is that the white ppl parade around the neighborhood like they are in Greenwich Village, in New York. U try mvng in some of thr hoods, I guarntee u they will burn a cross n shit on ur lawn

  • motherfucka people are getting upset b-cuz once again this is the way to get black people out of there communities, these developers claim they are doing something good for the neighborhood but all in all it is for the good of those that are trying to move back to the city for the benefit of public transportation, the arts and all that other shit that. I am going to say it and make it plain, the white people that ran out to the suburbs want to move back in the city. Raise taxes to get ppl out.

  • Black people demand that they should be able to live in an all-Black hellhole of crime, grinding poverty, blight, drugs and death on the taxpayers' dime. It's unsustainable, and I'm pretty damn tired of it.

  • People that live in Philly are fucking stupid, they fight positive change. They rather see an empty fucking lot, with a crack dealer. Then see some construction, that probably is finished at 7pm each night. God forbid if your property value goes up. They rather have Section 8 welfare moms, with 6 kids move into their precious hood

  • haha! they are the opposite of people who get upset when bad people move to their neighborhood

  • haha!

  • People are getting upset cuz 'here comes the neighborhood! are they serious?

  • All black people do is complain, they should be happy there neighborhood is being improved, if it wasn't they would say the city does not care about the minority communities. Higher taxes is a small price to pay to live in a clean and safe neighborhood. make up your mind.

  • @chaelgellion Your ignorance is showing. It's not just black people feeling the problems of gentrification and therefore complaining about it, it's white people too. It all depends who you talk to. And it comes down to how much money people have. If they can't afford the taxes being raised, or rent for some, then where will they go when they lose their homes? Personally I'm on the fence. But people like you need more info. Don't be so quick to judge.

  • @LibertineDeSade, White ethnic wortking class people don't complain about gentrificiation. I live in Italian South Philly and have never heard a complaint about gays, or artists or yuppies moving into the neighborhood. I've heard little compliant of Asians either because Asians don't bring down property values. Those white people who complain of gentrification are trust-fund anarchist types or liberals who live in the suburbs.

  • @Skinnyjoeymerlino Some white working class people DO in fact complain about gentrification. And unless you know every single white person in South Philly you can't make such a broad statement. And for the record I was born and raised in South Philly, all my life. So I'm not speaking out of turn. Furthermore complaining about gentrification is not the same as complaining about immigrants, gays, or artsy types. While they can collide those are different topics altogether.

  • @chaelgellion and all you do is complain about black people complaining. clearly this is a low income neighborhood so when it is gentrified it wont be anymore therefore these complaining black people cant afford to live there so it makes no difference to them that the area is now safe nd clean or whatever

  • In North Philly, there's a tiny little redeveloped area called Brewerytown[lol], which looks nice, but is extremely overpriced. Go half a block over towards 29th street to get an awesome view of houses falling apart, abandon cars and enough trash to make even Oscar the Grouch feel jealous.

  • gentrifiers are faggot yuppie leftovers from the global housing bubble! Fake ass faggot hipsters yupiies and transplants! die! 666! 322!

  • That neighborhood has really come a long way in the last decade or so. I remember what it looked like around 2000. Back then it was a dirty and dangerous ghetto. The long time residents that are squaking about "new comers" are the ones who fucked up the neighborhood in the first place. I guess they don't believe in true diversity. Only when it suits their desires.

They also don't have a grasp of free markets and capitalism. Gentrification means safe, clean streets and better amenities.

  • It's not accurate to call this "gentrification" when it's not the wealthy moving in here. It's people looking for affordable housing in the market place who are just middle class. Teachers, nurses, docs, students -- you now have a truly diverse neighborhood that is not all one income or one race. It's finally getting healthy again, and the drugs and druggies finally have to pay a normal rent and a normal property tax. This is the only way to have schools you can send a child to.

  • @burgesspeanut they may not be wealthy but they are wealthier than the current residents so yes it is gentrification and tho you say the neighborhood is getting healthier its not for the people who have been living there for decades

  • It cracks me up that people think the people who have jobs and college education are the "gentry" as if they have inherited some money, when in fact they are just normal people who work. Is that so foreign to these old timers? It's a sad commentary that people are surprised by this, caught off guard, by such positive change that no government program had to pay for!

  • @burgesspeanut everybody that works is a normal person that works and this positive change is clearly not meant for the residents of the neighborhood its meant for the outsiders trying to move in

  • That block of S. Bouvier was a notorious crack market. The taxes were low because values were driven down by the drug trade. Now that the drug is being driven out by all residents of all incomes who are fed up, the houses have equity again, value, so they are paying a more realistic property tax. Anyone who misses the days of violent crack murders in Killadelphia and wants to pay low taxes for that reason is in the drug trade. You have cover the whole story here.

  • there is a lot of racism in that area, last year someone was going around putting lighter fluid on front doors and setting them on fire, the houses all belonged to new people who happened to be white, that is just not right and those people responsible will be judged by God

  • well lets see...crack junkies, gangs, murder -vs- higher taxes....pretty simple choice
