@BARONSCHWARZWALD - No real purpose other than looking interesting. In the 50s & 60s, dekatron tubes were used to count electronic pulses (before transistors were invented). They had the added benefit of not only counting, but displaying the results. They aren't manufactured anymore, but you can find old ones on eBay. They need > 480 Volts to light up, and the trick I'm using here is to generate that with a power supply from a cheap CCFL light.
