You cut down a lot of trees and burn a lot of fossil fuels to get the standard of living most wealthy countries enjoy. Let's get all countries equal first and then deal with what the consequences of we've consumed to get there later.
if you cut down trees, you reduce the supply of trees, which drives up the profits gleaned from planting more trees
if you drive up the demand for energy, you drive up the profits of developing newer more efficient energy sources
etc etc, if you get the Gov out of the way, this process happens smoothly, let the Gov in the way, this process happens in a slow, stupid, tripping, grinding way
