Here's the story of my mediocrity...

So I started lessons when I was 6yrs old. I've had several teachers over the years, most classical. They used to have me enter these competitions where you memorize and perfect 2 songs over 6 months. You perform them for judges and get critiqued. Well I hated it. Hated practicing, hated the performances, everything.

So finally I changed teachers, again, and she asks me "What do you want to play?"

Well I had no idea what to say. NO one had ever asked me that before. So after much searching, it turns out I really loved Yanni and enjoyed his piano music, but by then it was too late. I had lost all motivation to play and ended up quitting my lessons when I was about 17yrs old.

I played off and on for church and myself sometimes, but I really didn't get into it again until recently. We can thank Gackt for that. =)

Lessons are important and you should try to get everything out of them that you can, but always take time to play what YOU want. Practice your lessons, but reward yourself with music that you enjoy. Those boring lessons will someday enable you to play everything you could ever want.

I wish I had practiced harder because I've been trying to learn "One Winged Angel" from FFVII and it's kicking my butt!

Trust me, I know lessons can suck, but I promise that it will be worth it. Promise. =)

Actually, I didn't find music that I actually wanted to play until I was around 18 and I had finally quit my lessons by then. Glad you're enthused about playing Gackt. =)
