Great ending, and the final scene with the vending machine WORKS this time. In the transmitted version, the audience can't side with the machine because it's being a dick and kicking the dog while it's down, in this unaired version, the machine gets the ovation from the crowd because it's taking the triumphant, smug Rimmer down a peg.

The ending they went with is way better. There was no need for closure. The show was about comedy and they went out with a big bang. This ending was too predictable that Rimmer would get screwed. The ending they went with had a element of surprise.

The ending they used left questions to be answered like

Are the crew we see in Back To Earth living on the Mirror Red Dwarf and if not, what the smeg happened?

How did they manage to get a light bee to bring back Rimmer in Holographic form since there didn't seem to be Mirror opposite of Rimmer on board since "our" Rimmer assumed his role as Captain in that universe.

They did touch upon why Kochanski left but could always show that in the new series, I heard Dave are doing it for 2012

this ending does give better chance for another series and it was good to see Rimmer screw the captain over and leave him and all his crew mates that imprisoned them left in dead space with only little ships but Rimmer kneeing the grim reaper in the balls was the best ending ever.

Ace Rimmer (original Rimmer) comes on the 'Dwarf and saves the other Rim from the ships meltdown. Says it on the DVD booklet.

This version ending would have worked SOOOO much better and would've been far less confusing a tie-in for Back To Earth. Rimmer being assassinated by the vending machine might explain why he's a hologram again, and them leaving all the escape ships behind would explain why Red Dwarf is empty again

Red dwarf fan for 15 years and I just now saw this ending for the first time. The true ending for series 8 and the proper ending. The actual Only The Good ending always struck me as being thrown together at the last minute, and now I know why. It was! Naylor's artistic sense by season 7 was complete and utter shash and that was the result.

For some reason they chose to go with an ending that included a, frankly, silly death meets Rimmer scene and the destruction of the ship?

Thereby destroying any chance of continued series, which was obviously the opposite of their intention. A puzzling choice, almost as bad a decision as changing the ending of 'I Am Legend'. I suspect that somewhere along the line a commitee has been involved. Naylor just lost the knack of going with his gut instinct, this is the result.

I've never once watched an entire episode of series 8 since it was first broadcast on BBC2 in 1999. I own the DVD, but have never even checked if it works. I tend to hold back my critisism of Red Dwarf, because most of it is the greatest TV ever. But series 8 really blew the whole concept. Kochanski being human companionship to Lister in series 7 didn't sit right with me, but then having the whole smegging crew revived killed it completely. It also felt too American. And it dragged on a bit.

Yeah, it was pretty frustrating how back To Earth didn't bother to explain what happened after season eight. I don't expect perfect continuity from Red Dwarf but that was a huge discrepancy. This is great for those of us who need holes filled(I know what I said).

Loved this series.. I know a lot of dwarfers said they didn't like this one as much but personally, I found the dialogue as good as - if not better than the 4, 5 and 6 series.

I liked the stories too but the 5 and 6 series take the prize for those.

I know that a lot of people didn't like the 7th but I think it has a really weird other worldly charm to it.

I never really liked the 'real' ending, particularly with Death personified - RD is scifi not fantast, so if you're going to pull that sort of thing it's got to be properly legitimised.

It's not really a matter of not taking themselves seriously - the 'science' of Red Dwarf has always kind of made sense on it's own terms, but the idea of introducing Death, totally out of nowhere, in the very last scene, broke the suspension of disbelief for me.

I prefer this ending - more of a fit with what's gone before.
