I've listened to these two songs thousands of times (I mean it - thousands...). I just watched this version maybe a year ago. And watched it again now. It moved me to tears. Excuse the lack of eloquence here, it just means so damn much to me.
Son your young when you get some balls and live how this world works at that point comment until then plz shut the hell up. Hey go listen to Brittney or that big booty black chick
Epic version of WAFILS/Curtains..thank you EJ and band for the years of music you've given us.
"I love you, Bernie" means more to me now that I've watched "Two Rooms". EJ states that "WAFILS sums up the love we did have together & that we still do. The precious love that we had when we met together & it was like 2 children getting together & being brothers. That was very special. I would have to say that means more to me than anything else we've ever written."
This one-two punch blows 'Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding' out of the water. One of my favorite two song bookends on one of my favorite albums of all time. A truly beautiful end to a deeply personal an autobiographical look at an incredibly productive and creative five year boom in the life of Elton John and Bernie Taupin.
loved how the cameraperson zoomed in on the "in memory of dee murray/gus dudgeon" very classy. wish i could have seen who else was honoured on the other drums
I love this song so much.......I'm only 37 and have been listening to Elton for about 25 years now I have seen him live 26 times..............I haven't seen him in like 10 years now but he is still the greatest!!!
this song is absolutely amazing......always gave me chills listening to it....fell in love with it when I heard it on "Two Rooms" dvd back in the early 90's.
@Anacardiff Well there are a number of songs he never plays that are equally sentimental...he never plays "Eltons Song" (or anything off THE FOX), Cry to heaven, breaking Hearts, Shoot Down the Moon, Love Song (not in MANY years), or One More Arrow....it would be nice to hear some of the moer sentimental tracks live instead of the same "Sad Songs, I dont want to go on with you like that, and I'm Still Standing..." His excuse -people want to hear the hits.
@DavelovesRealMusic you know what would be great? a GOOD interview with him, asking him about topics like this. What do these songs mean to you? why you never play them? I could do that interview =)
@Anacardiff if you can get him to do an interview,.,.be my guest LOL. Since he does not write the words--the music and words might mean something completely different to him. ASlso -what the lyrics mean to HIM and what they mean to BERNIE also differ . But he does seem to only play the HITS live anymore except for special benefits. Imagine if he opened with All Across the Havens..people would be in SHOCK!
@DavelovesRealMusic OR LADY SAMANTHA LOLp-he never played that one live..psychedelic 1968 I think it would be amazing live !! And that song is still within his vocal range (deeper) He struggles on some songs now like GoodBye Yellow brick Road (high end notes are gone).
@DavelovesRealMusic there's a heap of songs I wish he'd play instead of the same old hits using the same tired arrangements from the Live In Australia album...at least maybe go back to the 17-11-70 album and play Take Me To The Pilot like that not with a ponderous 25 minute piano intro
@77edster Well--now that he has The Union LP out i am assuming more of the older songs will be pushed away so wer may not even hear "take me to the pilot" anymore (bernie said in an interview "he really has no idea what that song is about" lol) . But it's time to shake the set list up...it's been pretty consistent with the same set (maybe one or two tracks differ on occasion). Less "Sad Songs era" and more "Tumbleweed" era would be a good start. let's hear "My fathers Gun" live!
@DavelovesRealMusic I don't really mind which era, I'd just like to hear some other songs sometimes. I mean that 11 minute version of Rocket Man is pushing it a bit now. How about One Horse Town, My Father's Gun, I've Seen That Move Too, Spiteful Child, Just Like Belgium, Razor Face (even something from Empty Sky that isn't Skyline Pigeon would be nice...)
@77edster Anything off Empty Sky would have to be a tremendous effort for Elton. He has NEVER played anytyhing off that besides Skyline Pigeon. I think SAILS still rocks and would be a great choice or Valhalla or All Across the Havens....not sure why he insists on the same set list. I know he feels no one knows these songs but i would say half the audience DOES know most of his albums, song for song.
@DavelovesRealMusic he has so many great songs that i guess it's difficult for him to make a setlist...so he always goes with the hits...personally I would like to hear THE ONE, HEARTACHE ALL OVER THE WORLD the first one is played rarely and the second one was only played back in 1986 in his australia tour...remember? anyway he has so many great songs he has missed to perform live ( MAN, PLEASE, THE BIG PICTURE)
Esta duas músicas são tão lindas que a maior combinação que existe entre músicas é exatamente esta sequência desde a gravação do disco original.Muito boa!
this is without a doubt one of Elton and Bernies masterpieces. As much as his voice has deteriorated over the years and his phrasing is a little rough...this one still sounds great.
at 8:45 you hear those low notes by the choir going over all the other vocalizations... MAJOR GOOSE BUMPS. This is EPIC. Shows that Elton still has it and loves his music-- just as we do. MAN this is awesome.
OMG those incredible backing vocals!! No one does them as well as EJs band and the choir just take it to the next level. Love the little smile at 7:00 - Elton surely thinking "Shit, this is good!". An outstanding performance from one of the true greats.
This is truly an intriguing piece that Elton and Bernie wrote. Not an easy song to pull off live, but it still works. At least he is brave enough to still sing in the original keys that he wrote. Elton, my hats off to you. You inspired me to come out of my shell and unleash my voice. The girl wasn't just a piano player. Thanks for giving me the courage to succeed as a pianist and vocalist! Keep making great music. I will always hold your earlier songs close to my heart.
To SeattleCarnut2 - In one of Elton's bios, he claimed that this song spoke to the brotherly love between he and Bernie and what they endured in their early years together.
I don't know what the story is behind "We all Fall in Love Sometimes" and "Curtains". But I love them both. It makes me cry when I listen to them together.
For me , one of the most brilliant albums ever created by a true genius of my our time. The Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy album was one of the very first albums I had ever had the pleasure of experiencing and helped spur my hunger for music. I still play it now and again to this day.
Well you don't have to like the person (and actually it's impossible to like or dislike a person if you don't know him in person), but his music is simply sublime.
[ lyrical tour de force] "Cultivate the freshest flower this garden ever grew/ Beneath these branches I once wrote such CHILDISH WORDS for you/ But that's Ok, there's treasure children always seem to find/ and just like us/you must have had a "Once Upon A Time"
There have been a few songs over the years that resembled the sound and carried melody bits of Curtains, but the poetry and sound of this song has always been one of the most underated songs that Elton ever composed.
Very fitting that it finally is getting the respect that we all have known since it appeared on Capt. Fantastic years ago.
"... and thats ok, there's treasure children always seem to find."
curtains has to be sent in a freakin' capsule stamped "best elton john song" for future generations.....bloody awesone...i am speechless. yes there are sooooooo many elton classic gems, but guys...this is the song for all time...i don't care how tough ANYONE on the face of the earth is...this song will go straight through your heart...PERIOD!!! I am not gay and i LOVE ELTON JOHN...screw all haters who cannot understand what MLK said...content of the character...peace!
Curtains is the end of the record, and just a summary of the record. Elton used reprise on empty sky, and on captain.... also in "we all fall in love" "our empty sky was full of laughter"... anyway the last verse sums it up on curtains, "But that's okay There's treasure children always seek to find And just like us You must have had A once upon a time" Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains is a big fan of "curtains" as well, he said in guitar mag article
My understanding is that the entirety of "Capt. Fantastic" is about the history of Elton, Bernie, their careers and the band. I know that much of the material deals with the creative process/songwriting, etc... but what is "Curtains" about? I've never heard a definitive answer...
What I take from it is,,,'you must have had a once upon a time'....was their big break. And 'Curtains' means the end of what was one beautiful collaboration. A new beginning. Ahh hell who knows really? Just some damned good music!!
I had NO idea that he had Nigel back! but as tough as it is to pick an all time favorite elton song, curtains is certainly top 5 if not number 1. Seems like after rock of the westies he never rock and rolled again. but so awesome and what a kick ass band with nigel davey and dee dee was under rated as a bass player and all of them first class backup singers. MORE CAPTAIN STUFF LIVE!!! and all the young girls love alice to...
Yeah, I first noticed he had Nigel back when I saw him at the forum (in LA) in 2002. Billy Joel was there with his drummer, Liberty DEVitto, and both drummers and superstars did the Beatles "Come Together." I couldn't believe it. It was like a childhood dream.
In January 2007 a good friend of mine committed suicide at the age of 16. His mother chose "Curtains" for the last song at his funeral. Curtains is a wonderful song and every time I hear it I will always think of you Beau.
if you look closely you can see him checking the lyrics on an auto cue on the floor to his right - memory going a bit these days - I noticed he has one for The Red Piano shiw I swa in Vegas this week also,
Does anyone remember buying Capt. Fantastic when it first came out and reading through all the booklet of lyrics and The comics of the Elton story and the best thing of getting lost in the amazing art work as you open the double gate album as you sat next your Hi-Fi listening in amazement??? Highlight of my life as far as music enjoyment...
I waited for the record store to open, I was the first one to buy it. It was FANTASTIC. I remember it well. I miss albums and all the artwork, great days.
Takes me back to the vintage Elton John Band line up, the late and great Dee Murray, Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson. Led by the Captain and the Kid, 33 years later this song is still as moving as it was then. Thank you so much Elton and the Band for playing this, the choir really shines on this as well. Just beautiful.
What do you mean "late...Dee Murray". What happened? Excuse me for my ignorance but I spent 2 years in then-governor George Bush's greatest achievement in the Lone Star State: prison. So what did I miss? I caught when John Entwistle kicked it right before the Who tour. Please tell me Dee died a peaceful death.
From Wikipedia:After battling skin cancer for a number of years, Murray died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after suffering a stroke in 1992; he was 45.
He had throat surgery. Plus as you get older you cant holt those high notes in your voice, so he changed to a strong deep booming voice which Elton admits he likes better. But his throat will not alow him to reach those old high notes unfortunately
Just buy Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. The best album he ever did, IMO it is better than the ALREADY STELLAR Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Capt Fantastic was one of my favorite Elton John albums (Curtains was my fav. song off it). The only one that surpassed it was the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album.
the most powerful moment for me was seeing the "in memory" tributes on the drumset. so moving, especially for long-time fans.

These 2 songs in sync bring back old memories ... We all do fall in love sometimes and then make mistakes we wish we could take back..
Take care ....

My understanding is that the entirety of "Capt. Fantastic" is about the history of Elton, Bernie, their careers and the band. I know that much of the material deals with the creative process/songwriting, etc... but what is "Curtains" about? I've never heard a definitive answer...
jjobie 3 years ago
What I take from it is,,,'you must have had a once upon a time'....was their big break. And 'Curtains' means the end of what was one beautiful collaboration. A new beginning. Ahh hell who knows really? Just some damned good music!!

Very powerful songs and full of emotion both in lyrics and music. Remember feeling moved first time I heard it on my moms old records!

In January 2007 a good friend of mine committed suicide at the age of 16. His mother chose "Curtains" for the last song at his funeral. Curtains is a wonderful song and every time I hear it I will always think of you Beau.

I've often said I wanted this song played at my funeral as well.

Yes. This album definitely delivered. Every song was like magic. I worshipped the music as if it were superhumanly created.

REDTIB03GT 3 years ago 4
What do you mean "late...Dee Murray". What happened? Excuse me for my ignorance but I spent 2 years in then-governor George Bush's greatest achievement in the Lone Star State: prison. So what did I miss? I caught when John Entwistle kicked it right before the Who tour. Please tell me Dee died a peaceful death.
toddg64 3 years ago
From Wikipedia:After battling skin cancer for a number of years, Murray died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after suffering a stroke in 1992; he was 45.

For some reason, over the years through his musical career, Elton's voice changed considerably
igaben 3 years ago
He had throat surgery. Plus as you get older you cant holt those high notes in your voice, so he changed to a strong deep booming voice which Elton admits he likes better. But his throat will not alow him to reach those old high notes unfortunately
Jertheking6360 3 years ago
He had throat surgery as a result of the damage caused by the nonstop alcohol and cocaine use.
It's a shame, too. His voice on Captain Fantastic was incredible.

Just buy Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. The best album he ever did, IMO it is better than the ALREADY STELLAR Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Captain Fantastic was the first album I bought with my own money as a kid. I know the lyrics to every song.

I also know all the lyrics, I really "better off dead", that whole album is great.

Capt Fantastic was one of my favorite Elton John albums (Curtains was my fav. song off it). The only one that surpassed it was the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album.
