Argh, I didn't like the ending. I was thinking Hasumi was going to apologize to Kuno... Anyways, I'm sad that the movie ended... I kinda liked this movie.
I can't solve the puzzle. The pieces are all over the place! It must have been a great story and all since i liked it. But i can't connect the things that are happening and writting with people. Please heeeeeeeeeeeelp! :)
People who keep commenting about the roles of teachers parents etc, it is very easy to see them being like this sadly with a bit of knowledge of the Japanese mind set.
Im so confused @.@ Who was the girl starring at Yuichi when he had the apple at the coke stand could it have been Kuno??...and Yuichi was the one who walked Kuno to her rape scene right? smh who was she going to see at an abandoned factory anyways?? that would set off ten thousand bells and red flags in my eyes Xo
i think that the old guy who died was to show that people who can't do things for themselves are almost doomed to have a bad future, hinted early in the movie to be connected to hoshino first when his old bullies arose and his friends took it on for him & he couldnt stand up for himself, then later on bad things happened to him he thought he would end up like the old guy, that and his family issues along with psychological issues he suffered from bullying lead to the change in him
this was such an amazing film and i'm so glad i watched it all the way through. you can truly empathize with each character's emotions as they are depicted so great. but one thing troubles me each scene from the movie plays an important part in the end but one; the guy who got into the argument outside the concert, why was so much camera time given to him... i thought he might have been Philia but then i crossed that out and i'm left with confusion yet again i'm probably over analyzing it
@LuckyStarMitsukai Apparently Philia is the main character and Blue Cat is the bully. Omg I am so confused about this movie. I am trying to read all the comments to get a better sense of the events that occurred and why they happened lol.
yeah i understood that much about philia and black cat at the end of it, but do you know which guy i am talking about who got so much camera time at the waiting line of the concert for fighting ? i don't understand the purpose of that, was it meaningless? lol
@LuckyStarMitsukai I know. I didn't understand that clearly as well. I thought it was to show the impact of Phillia's BBS. But then, who is the girl that was staring Yuichi when he had the apple? lol? Oh, there was one part that was really profound, the part where he stares into the hair perm machine. You know when Lily was talking about finding her ether, as if it was a sunset glow or w/e. I think that was the scene where Yuishi found his ether.
You could tell Hoshino was Blue Cat and that Yuichi was Philia because Philia said that he only got into Lily CC recently and that was when Hoshino first introduced it to him when they had the sleepover. Plus Blue Cat kept on talking about that girl who likes Debussy and remember when he knew about Kuno during the scene that the guys pushed him into her.
This movie was really amazing!!! I came across it while I was looking up Salyu vids, a very rare find. =D
@Northgtabeast One girl was forced into prostitution and ended up killing herself. They tried that with a different girl but she was stronger and she shaved her head so that they couldn't use her. The men they sold the girls to wanted cute schoolgirls and by shaving her head she made herself undesirable.
and he clearly still have conflicting and confused emotions within himself. all these because he killed blue cat and he probably feels the haunting guilt, yet he cannot decide whether what he did was right, and doesnt have the courage to put down the past. i'd just like to let everybody here know that we have to take courage, hold on to our dreams and not let our souls die away because we're all really worth so much more.
@mistyeyedsurprise Thankyou for saying these. I'm from Singapore too and this movie feels so close to us but yet it feels so different in so many ways. As much as I'm shaken by all the unfortunate news lately, I was pretty assured by your comment.
@mistyeyedsurprise the BBS in my country talked about the alphabet "B" when the music video of lily ended. we would like to believe that B stands for Blue cat, some kind of message from the princess of Ether ordered to murder Hoshino, we even linked the moment Hoshino gave the apple to Yuichi to the moment Eve gave apple to Adam after she bit it. You know it's not a normal fruit. Goshh I wished I could type Thai here so I could make it clearer
i pity i feel for these teens are the same kind that i feel for the characters in this film. i believe the ending serves to simply tell us that the girl who got raped was able to continue her life bravely and preserving her passion for music, because she didnt feed the hatred that she is supposed to hold for the people who bullied her. she still can play the piano as beautifully as before, even though all her hair is gone. yet for the protaganist, his results have come to a downfall,
i dont really hate them for ruining stability in our society, i actually feel more sympathy for them. because i know how it feels to be violent and to be angry with the world. just like the characters in this film. i've been there, done that, n it is a very scary and miserable situation to be in. i wish people my age could really wake up and honour the fact that they are alive. the power is youth is boundless, yet many youngsters dont recognise this and destroy themselves in the end.
hi all i'd just like to share some of my views tonight. i live in singapore - it's a very small country guarded by numerous strict laws. however recently, in less than two months, 3 murder cases have arised, 2 of which concerned teenage gangsters and their violent riots. such a situation has not been faced by singaporeans ever before. it just honestly saddens me to know today that a few more youngsters - supposedly full of promise - have foolishly sold their souls to the devil.
only thing confusing me about Yuichi being philia is that from philia's online comments he seemed to know about lily before blue cat whereas in that one scene whilst yuichi is at hoshino's house he asks hoshino about that lily poster on his bedroom wall seemingly not knowing who lily is...so hoshino apparantly intro'd yuichi to lily? then again this is my first time watching this so i'll prolly watch it again. o and ty for the upload this movie was moving and well worth watching.
@NukoNekoNyan Yuichi is definitely Philia because it even says so on the official Lily Chou-Chou site. Before I read the site, I was also confused about Philia :))
@aRuKiDaShItE o ok! i also wanna say i was goin nuts thinking wheerrre have i seen the name lily chou-chou before and when the song came on (during the happy aikido team celebration scene) i realized it was on the Kill Bill soundtrack O:
@NukoNekoNyan Hoshino did introduce Lily to Yuichi when they were 13 years old, and then Yuichi created The BBS and the Hoshino joined it without knowing who is who in there
This movie is awsome. I just do not understand if Yuichi died at the end or if he just found his "ether". Anyway, the director it's a genius. I saw Hana & Alice some time ago without knowning that was from the same director. I like both.
Thanks for uploading. Im glad its still safe I saw this movie for the first time like four years ago and I've watched it a couple times because I was trying to figure it out. Now that Im older I think I understand it a little more. I thought about it today because my Japanese teacher asked me what my favorite Japanese movie was. And I thought about this and got distracted from hw and watched it. from the comments I understand it a lot more. Well let me stop my rant. Thanks!!! love this movie!
@NOHfeer17 Yeah I doubt the same thing you do, I'm not sure that the directer wanted to show how fragile their friendship is or.. it's just his remissness
I was hoping the teacher would be more helpful, but at the end she's still proven to be useless. Except for buying Yuichi his Lily CD at the beginning.
Great movie though. Definitely need to watch it over again.
For all the people who made it possible to see this film. Heh.
I knoe I shouldn't say I'm so happy to see it. But this is my all time fav now, and the film is painful, but it does sth for the ppl who watch it. I dunno wat I'll do if I knew anyone in the characters position =/
They never talked about the dead people. So, they still never exists, never were living. That´s sad. But such a great movie, melancholy and heart breaking.
@longtailedmonkey: It is impossible to understand what everyone else is going through... though it may look simple on the outside. When you look at it, you cannot really blame anyone since they were all part of the same system, of the same society. I admire Kuno though, for fighting on and not giving up despite her tragic experience.
Throughout this whole film, I saw myself crying multiple times. I felt for the characters-- though I must be honest... I didn't understand it fully, because I only watched it once.
It took me 4 times within 3 years to understand this movie.. But I'm still a bit confused. Mostly over who Philia was. I don't think Yuichi is definitely Philia from the movie, nor do I think Kuno was definitely Philia...
I would however, find the movie way more ironic if Kuno was Philia. Because Hoshino caused her so much pain, yet they helped each other during their tough times..... Weird.
ok seriously, wat the fuck?! the chick who was secretly a prostitute commits suicide, the talented hated chick who was bullied was raped and shaved, the school bully(and rat bastard) is mysteriously murdered at a concert where coincidentally the quiet kid whos also bullied and has no self esteem was, who i think later committed suicide as well, and the useless teacher doesn't even notice.
Is she completely clueless about it all or is she just playing dumb, I can't decide which one is worse. She's considered a school authority and if she turns a blind eye to it all then she's also part of the problem.
)': that film was so sad,i didn't understand half of it though, like i got confused as to who was who and who the boy at the start of the film was >_> very good film though.
When I was young I watch this movie ...I love it but I'm not be surely I can understand...but I watch this movie again and again...I think I learned so many thing from it...I know a lot think that this movie proud to present..I don't know it's true...
Ah, my favourite film! I took to watching this on youtube because my dvd is so horribly scratched after about 20+ viewings and forcing people to borrow it from me numerous times. Just like the people watching this for the first time I don't understand this film entirely. I suppose you can never really understand it; everything is left to you to decide. It definitely deserves watching again, because I always discover something new.
i am definitely buying this dvd so i can re-watch. the cinematography has really helped to express this story, it's such a pity that youtube has such poor quality. but none-the-less, thank you so much for uploading!!
i watched this movie for the first time, although ive known about it. the atmosphere of this film is quite simillar to my junior/high school age;no suicide, hard bulies actually.
it is so hard for me to wath beginning to the end. my brain is getting full and then the scenes came into just like flooding.
i might like this movie but i think i wont watch again. but thanx for uploading!
The guy who dies in Okinawa is a drifter,a hippie, who is always mooching off the others. He tells the boys that nature is not really a paradise, but a dangerous place where creatures kill one another. This turns out to be true about the human world as well: he relies on the kindness on others, and he is killed (in fact, his mooching leads to his death: he is trying to get a lift once again on the road, but gets run over). As a gentle drifter who relies on other's generosity, he cannot survive.
Also, I want to add that people should be careful about assuming that the whole Lily-worship thing is presented as an unquestionably good thing in the movie. In fact, Blue Cat is really an evil person in the "real" world, and does the most anti-ether thing by denying access to Lily herself. The scene in which fans start fighting over which version of Lily is true and right is another example of how the movie invites us to think about what kind of an answer the otaku world offers.
I didn't like it. I thought I would too. I will have to rewatch it and try to better understand it. Or maybe the reason I feel empty after viewing this movie is because I'm left confused and waiting for all the ties to come together....that never did.
it s a fabulous movie very rich in observation of everyday life i can see why it s not of the taste of the amirican who use a more action pattern more simple hero v looser etc here it s more describing life of student but melting more than one story anyway i love this movie it s in japan but it remains me my own life at school its universal with exeptional music think i m going to listen debussy ...
Wow, that was an amazing movie. I like how it has so much depth and really reaches into a place in the adolecent psyche that not many movies tend to go. This is a movie that you can learn from and think back on your own life. Thanks for sharing it. Also, I really like the music. I think I'm a Lily Chou Chou fan now. :)
Can't thank you enough for this, i watched it for the first time when i was still in china and i was just amazed by it. and i couldn't find it in stores in here so TAHNK YOU! DANKE SCHON, MERCI, GRACIAS,谢谢.
@masa8050 The scene when Hoshino threw money to the sea, did the director want to imply something more ? something that foreigners like me will never understand because of the different culture. This is what The BBS I followed talk about. thank you in advance!
@Dirge4Novembre There is not one perfect answer for it,and I think it's not because of cultural difference.
First,Hoshino was nearly drowned in the sea. After that, young man with white hair died by being crushed by car .Then old okinawan guide said that these bad thing happened because boys brought something wrong.Maybe Hoshino thought that it is the money they stole,so he threw it away. But that's not enough.
@Dirge4Novembre Hoshino's family had trouble.Later you realise that His father's factory failed and his parents divorced. He may did it desperately. And after summer ends,Hoshino changes. But these are only my understandings there's more other interpretation.I think the directer tried to express low teen's fragile mind.
tsuda killed herself. the girl who was forced in to prostitution and hung out with yuichi. remember her phone hanging on the powerline. she said she wants to fly in the sky right before. i'm not sure why the kids were talking about kuno in the dark and saying she just died tho.
well yeah, i got the non linear time thing and that it was a flashback and they were talking about tsuda not kuno. but i don't get why exactly it happened that way. other than iwai wanted us to think that kuno had killed herself and then be surprised it was actually tsuda. but i dont get why he wanted to make us thing that except just to make it more interesting.
Acabo de ver esta pelicula por TV...quede asombrado, es magnifica en su totalidad, el lenguaje cinematografico me envolvio tremendamente¡¡¡ Mi respeto a Shunji Iwai
thank you for uploading. Is the ending bright after all; is there hope? Personaly I think so. At least for yuichi and the girl (whose name I can't remember). This is a very dark vision on youth though. I am 17, but I have never been confronted with bullying, neither have I ever seen someone being bullied. Luckily...
@sammythangerules It's definitely hope there. I would love to believe that Yuichi had found his new ether at the end. can you remember when Yuichi threw up and went to the bed. He said to his teacher that he heard the strange noise in his head. That's what one of lily fan told us that the most important episode of awaking her Ether is hearing a strange noise in her head.It gonna make a whole page to describe about the new Ether of Yuichi. lol
every time i hear the songs from this film, especially the one a the end, i just become speechless. it just makes me feel so sad, but i love the film. its a masterpiece!
the end everyone is sorta there off in their own world and they're only communication to each other is through the chat...i wished that somehow their differences could have been resolved but seeing how it didn't its probably better off this way because everyone has they're own ether i guess...in the end everyones lack of direction in communication is why everyone ends up sad or dead...(its just my opinion...ignore me if you don't agree)
no. i totally agree with you. there is no reason why these kids couldnt have been friends, and helped each other out with these disturbing problems rather than causing them
This movie really breaks the happy-adolescence, anime-fed mystic bubble that foreign people see surrounding japanese kids. It's a crude view of what it is: The hollow, lonely silence they've been thrown out...
Vashsunglasses, i am in your debt. You saved my ass. Seriously. I have a 6-8 page paper due on the interconnectedness of the audio editing to the cinematography of this movie for my "japanese youth in cinema" class in two hours. If not for your kindness, id probobly wind up with a big fat "F"...in a film course. yeah. Thanks again :p
this movie is so sad, so melancholic, i just hate how is it that they cannot communicate! they just dont express anything, they dont say anything, just their silence, oh my, is desesperating! and at the end "maybe im here because i want to shout... IM HERE!!" it just made feel sad...but the music is beautiful..thanks for uploading!! (:
not just that. They're not afraid to show tragedy. Far too many American tales follow the same old recipe. Hero faces problems, hero gains strength and overcomes problems, and there's a happy ending for all.
American media just loves to show a happy ending so you walk away feeling pretty good, but never really walk away thinking.
But it would be completely inaccurate to judge American media and say that all of their movies hold the same recipe
There are many moving American films it's just sadly just like the Japanese film industry the quality films are being swallowed into a sea of mainstream garbage
To be honest, just off the top of my head, two American films that remind me of this are "Elephant", and to a lesser degree "American Beauty". I don't think it's so much that they don't make this sort of story, but rather, marketing is more difficult. It is just easier to sell happy endings in America, than it is, drama.

Throughout this whole film, I saw myself crying multiple times. I felt for the characters-- though I must be honest... I didn't understand it fully, because I only watched it once.

for me at least, i think this movie is a one time only see.

Weird.
DarthYoungling 2 years ago 3
Yuichi is definitely Philia.

ok seriously, wat the fuck?! the chick who was secretly a prostitute commits suicide, the talented hated chick who was bullied was raped and shaved, the school bully(and rat bastard) is mysteriously murdered at a concert where coincidentally the quiet kid whos also bullied and has no self esteem was, who i think later committed suicide as well, and the useless teacher doesn't even notice.

"try harder" she says. sadly though, japanese teachers are like that sometimes. unwilling to meddle in "personal businesses" of students.
yyouly 2 years ago
Is she completely clueless about it all or is she just playing dumb, I can't decide which one is worse. She's considered a school authority and if she turns a blind eye to it all then she's also part of the problem.
stercussinefortuna 2 years ago
@yyouly Oh, I get it. She says "try harder" and he interprets that as "try harder to commit suicide"?

Ah, my favourite film! I took to watching this on youtube because my dvd is so horribly scratched after about 20+ viewings and forcing people to borrow it from me numerous times. Just like the people watching this for the first time I don't understand this film entirely. I suppose you can never really understand it; everything is left to you to decide. It definitely deserves watching again, because I always discover something new.

This is a great movie, thank you so much for making it available.
For people who have asked about the significance of the guy who gets hit by a car in Okinawa, here is my take on it, for what it's worth:
caandtif 3 years ago
>caandtif
You do wonderful interpretation.Thank you.
gaara40d 3 years ago 2
The guy who dies in Okinawa is a drifter,a hippie, who is always mooching off the others. He tells the boys that nature is not really a paradise, but a dangerous place where creatures kill one another. This turns out to be true about the human world as well: he relies on the kindness on others, and he is killed (in fact, his mooching leads to his death: he is trying to get a lift once again on the road, but gets run over). As a gentle drifter who relies on other's generosity, he cannot survive.
caandtif 3 years ago 4
I feel sory for that guy I kind of like him xD your interpretation is great : D
ckcl666 3 years ago 2
Also, I want to add that people should be careful about assuming that the whole Lily-worship thing is presented as an unquestionably good thing in the movie. In fact, Blue Cat is really an evil person in the "real" world, and does the most anti-ether thing by denying access to Lily herself. The scene in which fans start fighting over which version of Lily is true and right is another example of how the movie invites us to think about what kind of an answer the otaku world offers.
caandtif 3 years ago 3
Anyway, just a few random thoughts, the great thing about the movie is there is so much there, and we can all see it differently.
Thanks again.
caandtif 3 years ago 2
I didn't like it. I thought I would too. I will have to rewatch it and try to better understand it. Or maybe the reason I feel empty after viewing this movie is because I'm left confused and waiting for all the ties to come together....that never did.

@masa8050 The scene when Hoshino threw money to the sea, did the director want to imply something more ? something that foreigners like me will never understand because of the different culture. This is what The BBS I followed talk about. thank you in advance!
Dirge4Novembre 1 year ago
@Dirge4Novembre There is not one perfect answer for it,and I think it's not because of cultural difference.
First,Hoshino was nearly drowned in the sea. After that, young man with white hair died by being crushed by car .Then old okinawan guide said that these bad thing happened because boys brought something wrong.Maybe Hoshino thought that it is the money they stole,so he threw it away. But that's not enough.
masa8050 11 months ago
@Dirge4Novembre Hoshino's family had trouble.Later you realise that His father's factory failed and his parents divorced. He may did it desperately. And after summer ends,Hoshino changes. But these are only my understandings there's more other interpretation.I think the directer tried to express low teen's fragile mind.

I thought Kuno did kill herself. The teacher said to Yuichi"will you tell miss Kuno to gohome"
then which girl was dead ? sb know ?
namgiaonline 4 years ago
tsuda killed herself. the girl who was forced in to prostitution and hung out with yuichi. remember her phone hanging on the powerline. she said she wants to fly in the sky right before. i'm not sure why the kids were talking about kuno in the dark and saying she just died tho.
samusamu 4 years ago
That was a flashback - Tsuda dying. The kids in the dark room were talking about her.
Notice the whole movie doesn't roll on a timeline?
nitinrao49 4 years ago
well yeah, i got the non linear time thing and that it was a flashback and they were talking about tsuda not kuno. but i don't get why exactly it happened that way. other than iwai wanted us to think that kuno had killed herself and then be surprised it was actually tsuda. but i dont get why he wanted to make us thing that except just to make it more interesting.

thank you for uploading. Is the ending bright after all; is there hope? Personaly I think so. At least for yuichi and the girl (whose name I can't remember). This is a very dark vision on youth though. I am 17, but I have never been confronted with bullying, neither have I ever seen someone being bullied. Luckily...
sammythangerules 4 years ago
@sammythangerules It's definitely hope there. I would love to believe that Yuichi had found his new ether at the end. can you remember when Yuichi threw up and went to the bed. He said to his teacher that he heard the strange noise in his head. That's what one of lily fan told us that the most important episode of awaking her Ether is hearing a strange noise in her head.It gonna make a whole page to describe about the new Ether of Yuichi. lol
Dirge4Novembre 1 year ago
every time i hear the songs from this film, especially the one a the end, i just become speechless. it just makes me feel so sad, but i love the film. its a masterpiece!
mullac11 4 years ago
the end everyone is sorta there off in their own world and they're only communication to each other is through the chat...i wished that somehow their differences could have been resolved but seeing how it didn't its probably better off this way because everyone has they're own ether i guess...in the end everyones lack of direction in communication is why everyone ends up sad or dead...(its just my opinion...ignore me if you don't agree)
SasukeLvr2TheExtreme 4 years ago 3
no. i totally agree with you. there is no reason why these kids couldnt have been friends, and helped each other out with these disturbing problems rather than causing them
Italktorainbows 4 years ago
This movie really breaks the happy-adolescence, anime-fed mystic bubble that foreign people see surrounding japanese kids. It's a crude view of what it is: The hollow, lonely silence they've been thrown out...
korscha0 4 years ago 7
Vashsunglasses, i am in your debt. You saved my ass. Seriously. I have a 6-8 page paper due on the interconnectedness of the audio editing to the cinematography of this movie for my "japanese youth in cinema" class in two hours. If not for your kindness, id probobly wind up with a big fat "F"...in a film course. yeah. Thanks again :p

Glad I could help. Finals beat me up pretty hard this semester too...
vashsunglasses 4 years ago
this movie is so sad, so melancholic, i just hate how is it that they cannot communicate! they just dont express anything, they dont say anything, just their silence, oh my, is desesperating! and at the end "maybe im here because i want to shout... IM HERE!!" it just made feel sad...but the music is beautiful..thanks for uploading!! (:

japanese films have so much more meaning and feeling to them then American and British films
mullac11 4 years ago 6
not just that. They're not afraid to show tragedy. Far too many American tales follow the same old recipe. Hero faces problems, hero gains strength and overcomes problems, and there's a happy ending for all.
American media just loves to show a happy ending so you walk away feeling pretty good, but never really walk away thinking.
dtownley1 3 years ago 2
But it would be completely inaccurate to judge American media and say that all of their movies hold the same recipe
There are many moving American films it's just sadly just like the Japanese film industry the quality films are being swallowed into a sea of mainstream garbage
ferretboy787 3 years ago 2
To be honest, just off the top of my head, two American films that remind me of this are "Elephant", and to a lesser degree "American Beauty". I don't think it's so much that they don't make this sort of story, but rather, marketing is more difficult. It is just easier to sell happy endings in America, than it is, drama.
