Is it okay if my dog barks once in awhile if people walk by the yard, once I get the chickens? Will they be stressed? She wont bark non-stop she is very quiet, but barks occasionally to warn the dogs over the fence. Is it okay?
Just an FYI for everybody, chickens are natural omnivores, which means they eat everything. They really should be eating more than grain. They should have LOTS of bugs, plenty of greens, fresh grains instead of dried, and they'll even eat slugs and even rats if they get a hold of them! Anybody advertising vegetarian fed chicken or eggs are just trying to cater to people who are vegetarian, not looking out for the real interests of the chickens.
i have 7 roosters and 1 hen =( 4 of them were grew up together but the other 4 were
introduced after 6 maybe 8 weeks . they are all the same age . how long does it take your rooster to get that big ? that thing was huge . Also one of my roosters look like a ostrich .
Dear Becky, I just love your videos. Its really inspiring. I live in the heart of New York CIty in a tiny apartment and I m sooo tired of living in the materialistic society. I wish I can move to a secluded area where I can live a simple life as u r living now. Keep posting more videos in the future.
Becky, I fell in love with you at the get go. I've been "pecking" around youtube trying to find quality homesteading/small farming videos and happened upon this one. I'm now a subscriber and can't wait to watch them all! Great job, Becky!!!
I dont have chickens yet,but I plan on having some. Say for example I have one hen and one rooster. How many eggs will the hen lay with fertilized eggs ? How many with unfertilized ? Thanks
@SpringMist1 If you have say One hen and one roo all of your eggs will be fertile as long as he is shall we say Producing if you have more then one hen, One roo can mate with upto 10 hens Now mine for example has taken only 6 to be his Mates so just because they can does not mean that they will.. I hope this helps you out.
@SpringMist1 You have to have a rooster to fertilize the eggs. The hens will lay eggs with or without a rooster but if you want new chickens all the time you'll need to get a rooster.
You have the right idea. Modern living has made almost everyone in the Western World complacent. When it all falls apart a LOT of people will wish so much that they had this knowledge.
I have six isa brown hens and had until recently one rooster. They were laying six eggs per day until we had to send the rooster to my brother as my housemate couldn't live with the noise he made. since then, (about three weeks) we have not had a single egg. This is peak laying season here, and I wonder if there is anything I can give the hens to see them lay again?
@liveyorehistory Hens are VERY temperamental. If you make any change it get's them all upset and they will stop laying. Just be patient and they will lay again.
Wow! I'm so happy that there are people like you who are willing to show the rest of us how it is to homestead. :) I want to raise chickens one day! My parents (particularly my mom) think I'm crazy.. we live in suburbia so maybe that has something to do with it.
@frodobaggins115 Same here, I would love to, and since my parents are divorced and all brothers are off to college, It would be fun to grow one in secret, and then one day be like hey mom, FREE EGGS! Oh man, that will be that day!
lmao buying grit or anything else . chickens are one of the most self reliant birds there is . grit for birds are any gravel on the property . i have a food that will get you double yoke eggs every day . just send 100 dollars
Hi Becky ! I'm thinking about leaving the "rat race" very soon. I just found your channel. Fun to watch. What state do you live in? I'm thinking of Vermont.
Thanks for all of the info that you gave us and what breed is the cockerel he looks such a good looking bird p.s I guest you had tp have permision to get a cockerel depending on where you live thanks
Boohooo. This video reminded me of my 7 hens I had. I miss them. A hawk came and picked them off. :( They are such a joy to raise. To see them grow from a hatchling to a mature, egg producing hen. In addition to the items you mentioned, I used to feed them our leftover spaghetti. They love the noodles. We would get a kick out of that. *sigh* I had a R.I. Red, Golden Comet, Auracana and a Buff Orphington (?) and some banting hens. We even named them.
So the red hens you have- were those the ones raised by your game hens in the other video about baby chicks? Btw, how many times have your game hens set, and im guessing your games lay pretty well?
we have 47 chickens 17 of them r roosters i am lucky so far they dont fight they are about 7 weeks old my question is they r in a hen house and we are ready tomorrow to let them in the yard under a protecxtive cover free rage I see ur roosters free range around ur yard how do u get them back in the home at night... i am scared we live in tenn in the mountains and i have never let them run around but would love to... help any suggestions pls Kim
You have a very informative show. I would like to point out that in North Carolina, where Im from, we call the "red things on their heads", the one on top is a Comb, and the one on the throght we call the crawl. One more fyi, if your rooster gets were he is having trouble eating or calls, you might want to check his crawl, if it is full, you have to cut it open clean it out with water and soe it back up. Again, you have a very informative show, thanks
Such fun Becky Jet-Lee doesnt like you touching his manly-man poufy tail hahahaha He gave you what for ! haha He is gorgeous ! Hey ! watch that spur touching Missy ! Jet-Lee is so proud of his poufy tail & spurs..his manhood ! hehehe Cleopatra is so calm by comparison I appreciate your not feeding the chicks medicated feed if not required. Makes better sense to me.Dont feed them unpopped popcorn in Aug tho...pop, pop, pop, Kidding !!! Nice rich looking yolks on their egg.Love your Chicken Town
Not meaning to be picky, but the red on the top of the rooster and hen is a COMB, not a CROWN. Nice looking chickens.

The protein in chick starter isn't special, and most chick starter IS medicated. Just ask.

Hurray! No Meadicating Without A Problem! If it ain't broken, don't fix it. And drugs will more likely break them then the latter.
