used to have a bootleg of the minds doing this live in Dortmund. Was excellent. Wish there was a live version on tube. This was always a powerful minds cover
his voice is brillant in this in fact i like this better than mr gabriels !! jim kerr went to a small cuboard in loch earnhead studios to record this version and sung it with his head down !! brilliant version !!!
Simple Minds covering Biko might have been good had they done it around the time of their Sparkle In The Rain album where they covered Lou Reed's Street Hassle. With the intensity and sheer force of production (think of East At Easter, Kick Inside Of Me, Waterfront ...) they'd have done this song justice.
But by 1988, Simple Minds were a completely different band. Their songs were hollow, their production overblown, and the songs they covered were rendered lifeless. Shame.
Knowing the way Jim can work a crowd, I'd have to say that a live version of this in front of a crowd the size of the ones Peter performed in front of, would force most people think long and hard before choosing who is 'better'.
Having Jim get thousands of people to chant and sing would give his version far more impact.
Jim Kerr is catholic this song has more to it than just BIKO its for all the caths that fought but lost in the conflicts between the UK and other caths and PROTESTANTs wich I am one Jim fucked a great band up cause he hates PROTESTANTs Jim was a kinda hero to me as a late teen but in my early 20s i saw the faults deep and wide inside JIM KERR . and yes P Gabriel sings BIKO the best .jj7
Get a life. Give some evidence of Kerr's hatred. I'm a Prod (at least nominally) but have never hard anything sectarian from Jimbo. He's a fanny but his heart's in the right place. Terrible vocal on this though. How he fucked a great band of like if not simple Minds I can't begin to fathom.
Ya. Totally man. Like, OUR version of christianity is WAY better than THEIRS, and, like, we NEVER do anything bad to THEM.
GOD IS GREAT. PRAISE THE LORD. AND I HATE THOSE WHO DON'T BELIEVE IN THE BIG SKY DADDY THE SAME WAY I DO! AMEN!
On a civilized note, both the SM version and Peter's version are great. It's hard to ruin a well written song that has a powerful message. Sadly I lived my whole life and never heard this before last month. Now I've heard it at least a hundred times.
The belief in Jesus Christ as our LORD and SAVIOR is the TRUTH and THE ONLY WAY! I am no Liberal pussy and I know that JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The ONLY WAY, Catholic or Prodestant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Comer get some anytime!!!!!!!
Caps Lock, exclamation points and atrocious grammer- weapons of the uneducated and ignorant designed to defeat their opponents by preventing any understanding. You use them as well as any I've come across. Kudos to you.
When you actually have a point to make and learn how to make it, let me know.
Not religion itself is the main reason for war, hate and suffering. It is dogmatic thinking, which results in intolerance towards one another. Religion is one form of dogmatic thinking.
(Here speaks a non-religious theïst.)
But, no-matter of what cause, intolerance towards others because of thoughts of supremecy is the absolute worst thing in the world.
@Shitfuckerino You're right in saying that religion isn't the cause of war, hate and suffering. War, religion, hate and suffering are all caused by dogmatic thinking. Unfortunately all of those consequences are self-supporting, Each one creating an environment that breeds more dogma.
So religion promotes the furthering of war, hate and suffering by promoting dogma, and dogma is the cause of war, hate and suffering. It's like the 'chicken and the egg' problem- which causes which?
man, you forget that the protestants are the people behind KKK and other extremist white pride movements, not the catholics. there are bad and good people on each side.
yes, yes, you're right. i know. many people killed many people once all around the world. i am just saying, that thinking the protestants are better than other people (e.g. catholics) is nonsense. that's all. many atheists think they are better than religious people. this is bullsh*t, too.
It's not Christianity that is hated...it is the acts of certain followers, including intruding into the private lives of people who live differently. By no means all Christians do this, but the ones who do create much pain. Of course, it is only fair to point out that ANYONE who presumes to dictate another's life will cause misery and pain. ANYONE.
I do agree with you on that point. But at the same time there are those who despise Christianity just for existing. You can find anti-Christian overtones in MANY Black metal bands and songs. Personally I believe that people can believe what they want to. Even if it I don't believe what they do. But respect me and I will respect them also. Peace.
Those pigs in Whitehall and on Capitol Hill knew this saint was being tortured and killed as it happened. And they lecture us and others about "rights". SCUM.
We all don't accept race, they are different. Yet, Columbus still took the Indians as slaves, the Egyptians still took the Jews as slaves, every culture has taken slaves. Just because they are different. We are all different! Nothing changes that! We need to forget our differences and fight for a common cause-- stopping the insane madness.
When you have the experience of living under dictatorships terror and injustice this song with beautiful music makes sense deeply inside your soul, hopefully some day the people learn t live in peace around this world with no colors with, no different and just brotherhood of man like Lennon said..
I send this videos to my friends because there are subtitles, but I know it is a Peter Gabriel great song. However Simple Minds are one of my favourite bands.
Fantastic cover with marvellous bagpipes. I love Scotland, I love Simple Minds, I love peace.... I dream to a world without colours and social disparities. No more racism no more wars... I hope that someday my sons can live in a peaceful world where the brothehood is law and peace is the way of life.....
simple minds has done a fantastic cover version to this, i think its better than peter gabriel's version such a powerful song ashame it was to late for steven bilko who will never be forgotton
Just so you know, the lyric is Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja, the man is dead, not hiromija. In Xhosa, one of South Africa's official languages, Yihla Moja means "Come Spirit". Thats where it comes from. so, now you know
With all due respect, Gabriel's song is eternal - Simple Minds did a fine job but too pathetic. Despite noble cause for covering such a striking, powerful song...
Great Song, great Video - simply unforgettable, Peter Gabriel did a monument of political, musical history and Jim Kerr interpreted it..I dont have a word - just great!

Wow. You're a fountain of intelligence, aren't you?
I find all religion to be an embarassment to humanity. Any faith is a dangerous thing and a waste of human potential.
All religions are equally false. Yours is no different from all the rest. Once you and others realise that, the world will be infinitely better.
Sadly, that won't happen any time soon.
Religion isn't the only reason for hate and war and suffering- just the main one.
Peace.
