@igneous061 Yes. I sharpen professionally. Go to a hardware store and get what's called an Arkansas stone or polishing stone. Rough grit. Proceed as he said. Then take a piece of marble or go to walmart and get a diamond hone. The absolute most important part is to strop your edge. Just take a leather belt or denim jeans and rub the edge back and forth like a barber with a straight razor. This removes knicks and burs on the edge and fills in micro structure gaps along the edges bevel.
@igneous061 use whatever you want. However, if you don't feel like spending around $50 for a good stone, then you either have cheap knives or don't care enough about them.
Good video. Nice to see people showing how a knife should REALLY be sharpened. Also, ignore the idiots yammering about the house in the background. Who cares where the video is shot, so long as the information is correct and useful! Greetings from Aus. Keep up the good work!
When I sharpen a knife I don't cut into the stone because I can't seem to get a good edge and it also for me at lest make's it quicker. Thanks for the video;it was very helpful!
When in the wildernes make sure you don't film a 2 story white house with a deck in the background of your movie. But Thanks for the knife sharpening.
I use a diamond sharpener just like the one you've shown here. Problem is I can't get any of my blades sharp at all to save my life. How much pressure should I apply? I hear applying too much pressure dulls the blade rather than sharpening it. I would just like to get my blades sharp enough to shave hair off of my arm. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
@CBBMachineGun1988 DEPENDS on what kind of knife and what kind of angles and pressure to press down always start at an 45 degree angle if you use an stone most hand held sharpeners like yours or showed always do it heavy to get those dink and chips out but very lightly if it an routine sharpening.
@CBBMachineGun1988 you need to develop a burr by working one side then the other, once the edge is right, knock that off (hone) with only a few passes, leaving a micro-serrated edge. It's like bending a piece of wire back and forth until it breaks cleanly off. Also different knives are designed with different angles or styles of grinds, some are convex, others flat (scandi), some have a double-bevel etc.
@CBBMachineGun1988 Those diamonds are fairly course, may need to progress to wet&dry, a whet-stone, or a strop for shaving sharp depending on the quality and hardness of the metal in your knife.
@5xfunny You never heard of backyard camping? Sometimes your schedule wont allow a full excursion into deep woods but you want to test out a new tent or a new firestarter and just enjoy being outdoors. Deep woods or wilderness camping is the best but sometimes you just got to take what you can get.
that knife has a very steep and long bevel, it is beautiful. however, manyknife bevels are about a mm long, making it almost impossible to find the sharpening angle in that way. you can usually find it by looking down the side of the knife and placing the bevel flush with the stone.
Not bad, but I do have a few comments. First, that's not a single beveled knife, it's a scandi grind. A minor mistake but I want to point it out. Second, you have to rotate the blade more at the tip than lift; easier to show than describe. I mention this because I can see you're not getting the very tip. Lastly the fine side looks a little dished- Japanese synthetic water stones need to be periodically lapped flat.
I wouldn't mind watching more of these videos but I don't want to have to sift through the environmentalist fucktard videos. I'm all about preserving the environment by the way, I just don't need a group of discontent hippies to tell me how.

I sharpen with a cheesy cheap ass wetstone, doesn't even have to be wet anymore, I do it by eye and by sensing with the fingertips and I get it so sharp it's like a razor. Never do this. Always try and stretch your blade out away from you to achieve maximum sharpness. Doing this will ensure your blade has a rounded blade after a few uses.
LeonRFpoa 1 year ago
a burr is the sharpest the blade will take, harden like the Buck knife which is 60
rockwell hardness, just pull it toward you on a piece of wood that will remove the bur. one way to test
the sharpness is touch the blade at about 45 degrese on your finger nail if it slips
not sharp every 1/2 inch or cutting a piece of paper.
oldmanben100 1 year ago
Is there a correct way to sharpen a knife in the field i.e without the stone or tools?
leejones001 1 year ago
Shouldn't you pull towards you when you sharpen, like from dull to sharp?
jaesong 1 year ago
you cutting the stone not sharping to the max sharpness, turn the blade the other way
to sharpen the blade not cutting the stone, you are sharpening and dulling at the same time

A sheet of 800-grit abrasive paper does the job well enough, and weighs almost nothing. Japanese water-stones! Trendy bullshit!

What do you think is better, the sharpmaker or Lansky Crock Sticks sharpener To be used around house for house kitchen knives, SOG Survival knives and Swiss Amy Knife ?
How about on the GO to carry in your back Pack as far as Size and Weight and ease of use in a wood, etc ?

It is around 27 kilos. But hey, this guy knows little about bushcraft. He uses modern tools. Everybody can do this even my sister could.

Yay... another mouth breathing internet cammando who thinks he knows more about Bushcraft than someone who does it for a living.... you guys make me laugh... in future stick to porn and wanking into your sock...
