I know why as a photographer or director you wouldn't actually have them do it in a movie; but it always bothered me that all these craft were bristling with guns and missile launcers, but nobody trades all that many shots through the whole battle. It's like they're rationing laser blasts.
One thing I never see anyone talk about are the inconsistencies with the Death Star(s). They start building one in Ep.3. They finish about 19 years later. I know this because the Emperor just "dissolved the council permantly" in Ep.4. So lets assume it takes 20 years to build a Death Star. That figure seems reasonable. Yet, 3 years after Yavin, the Empire is 60% complete on another one. According to the opening crawl in Ep.6, the Empire has "secretly begun" it's construction. Thoughts?
Yeah, maybe....but all in all I think it's pretty suicidal to send the fighters and bombers into the middle of the enemy fleet to fend against the fighter escort and anti-air batteries, without support from the cruisers and frigates (and the Star Destroyers...don't know which class they are...other than the bad ass class of being Star Destroyers).
@seltjorn1 Imperial I/II Class Star Destroyers and Executor Class Super Star Destroyer. Given the TIE's cheap ass design you got to be a little crazy to pilot one.
i prefer lando hes much better pilot than han in my opinon he is but im still a die hard solo fan if we didnt have han we would not have anakin solo jacen solo and jaina solo
To their credit the rebels did amass a considerable fighting force there, although heavily outnumbered, they had strong warships, great commanders, and brilliant fighter pilots
The imperial fleet had the rebel ships outnumbered 10-1 but they had to big problems, one there fighters were sent on suicide attacks against rebel ships that simply wouldn't take much damage from fighter attacks, and the imperial star destroyers were ordered to block the rebel cruisers so the death star could destroy them. However they didn't intend for the rebel ships to engage the star destroyers and with already limited fighters they were over matched at that point of the space battle.
I think it's fair to say that the TIE fighter was a total failure. It's ugly as hell and performed very poorly. In this battle alone TIE fighter losses are 5 times bigger compared to rebel fighters..
some may disagree, but once the 3D versions are out,*waves hand* You WIll jizz your pants once you see the Millennium Falcon blast out that tie fighter as it flies through it.
THE greatest space battle of them all. With the BEST Rebel Pilot (Wedge) and the best rebel fighter (Millenium Falcon). Is it me or the alien along Lando had a vagina face? >.>
I love how the Imperial fleet starts out competently ripping apart the Rebel Alliance, and then as the Emperor gets more and more impatient in his attempts to turn Luke to the Dark Side, the fleet seems to become steadily more incompetent, ending up with the Executor crashing straight into the Death Star.
@Lichtenhammer THAT'S WHAT THE EXPANDED UNIVERSE CLAIMS EXCEPT IT ACTUALLY WASN'T BECAUSE HE HAD A SECRET EXTRA SITH APPRENTICE WHO WAS ALSO ON THE DEATH STAR
@Lichtenhammer No, he was called "Admiral Nial Declann" and he was from thr Thrawn trilogy (which, actually, truth be told, is one of the least unacceptable parts of the Expanded Universe)
I think it's really effective when you don't know what the bad guy's up to (kinda captured here with the ominous Death Star looming over the battle 'n stuff). Like in Band of Brothers. Suddenly a bunch of friggin' tanks attack or something like that. THEN you get to know the real face of the enemy.
"When the milienium falcon flew out of the death star exploding right behind it THAT WAS BULSHIT!" "DONT YOU DARE RAT OUT STARWARS THAT WAS TOTALLY ACCURATE!" thumbs up if you get both references.
the biggest problem with endor is ackbar says they wont last long against those star destroyers at point blank range. and yet a little later they went from supposedly getting obliterated to completely dominating and even blowing up the super star destroyer
I got only one beef with the Battle of Endor. The Death Star was destroyed and that kicks major ass, but at that same token, there were a shit load of Star Destroyers. I mean, those things don't die that easily. Destroying the Death Star was at the most only half of the (space) battle. I would like to see how the Rebel Alliance dealt with them after the destruction of the Death Star...
@GoldeneyePwner Admiral Thrawn said the turning point of the entire battle was when the emperor died. The emperor held together all of the imperial forces using the force and when he died they lost all coordination and confidence.
@hulkmeister23 But, Thrawn wasn't even at that battle, he thought that the death star was a stupid idea in the first place :P If he was there they would have won XD
@Restosiii what difference does that make, I know Wedge was so badass that he replaced Admiral Ackbar, eventually. Hell, the guy took down a ship as a revenge-fueled kid, by himself. Lets see Thrawn beat that!
@agentspinnaker Oh you can't cop out that the Emperor held everything together using the Force. That's like saying that Nute Gunray held together the droid armies in Phantom Menace just because he was aboard some space-ship. BTW, I'd rather piss out kidney stones than watch and go over how stupid the prequels are.
@GoldeneyePwner You're right. The Imperials had more than enough firepower to last even after the destruction, the problem with that though it's a huge shit on your morale. After it blew up, paelleon ordered a retreat.
@joethelantern Oh and the other problem was imperial fighter support. I think it was 400 vs 1300? and all 1300 tie's got pwned ( i could be wrong on the numbers, can't remember )
when that asian guy yells "theres to many of them" at 2:12 , in the movie independence day a asian man says the same thing at the first battle with those fighters after L.A. gets blown away. must be a movie refinance.
This is better than anything from the prequels by far. In fact, the effects of this battle are objectively better than most of the CGI stuff made nowadays.
Try counting the number of fighters in this scene. There's never more then a dozen or so on the screen. The mistake with CGI is that they have zillions so it looks fake.
@Angelshare1 Agreed, they have to always have the wide view too even when focussing on one or two ships so there is so much going on you cant concentrate on the main fight
You know, i wouldn't have minded if this battle were just a little longer, a few more shots of y wings blasting star destroyers, a few more shots of the Liberty and the Independence firing broadsides as they rush into the fray. I mean hell, the ENTIRE rebel fleet just flew right into the midst of the largest gathering of the Imperial fleet since the clone wars, hundreds of ships firing every weapon they have at each other, smashing into one another. A few more minutes would be epic
