My great dane passed away two years ago, and I still miss him everyday. Granted, we have our little mixed breed, who I adore just as much, but there's just nothing more satisfying than coming home and having a ginormous dog sit in your lap and lick your face. Everytime I see a great dane in person now, I flip out and just have to pet it. :)

Interested in being a Great Dane doggy parent, and was informed that they constantly break their tails on the walls from wagging their tails so hard, is this true, and if so is docking the tail recommended?

Great danes once they have cut their tails are many times hard to let heal because they wag that tail all over the place. For that reason some people doc their tail because they cant get it to heal. It does happen but more often their tails are just fine. None of my danes have had issues and out of all the puppies I have had only one had to have her tail docted. I think you should not doc a tail unless the problem arised with you are more likely not to have that problem anyway.

@petsarekidsto Nah you dont...Word of advice though (if you're a male) when playing outside with a fully grown dane and its running back and forth from you...Be sure you're facing away from them or at least covering up your goods ;) haha. Iv'e already learned my lesson. It wasn't pleasent :D

We have a boxer lab and he loves body slamming into you with all his might, we have been injured several times, oddly it does not phase him a bit.

I was looking into a Great Dane because I have always liked them and heard how mellow and easy to train they are.

@petsarekidsto that's called "happy tail" and happens when the dog just constanty wags their tale really hard, and whacks it against stuff. Instead of docking, some people who have noticed this habbit wrap their tale in ace bandages, or such, not confining it but rather to give it some cushion. Not all danes have this issue, its not an issue that only danes have, docking is unusual and a LAST resort.

@petsarekidsto I have a great dane, 3 years old, and it does sometimes smash his tail very hard until the point that it bleeds. usually, we just put a band-aid on it :] and it heals fairly quickly. however, if you dont realize that his tail is bleeding in time, it can spatter blood everywhere :\

we have three danes, only one has had "happy tail" as it's called. The other two are 7 and have never split their tail. Rare that it happens though...
