question what happen when the engine cuts does it spin out of control, because there is no tail rotor to counter the side force so you wont beable to autorotate
This technology was designed in as part of the MH-X Stealth Helicopter Program of the early ninety's. There is forced air passing through the tail boom which is a pitch direction tool.
As a youth in Civil Air Patrol on Long Island, N.Y. in the 60's I fell in love with the first Hues 500 and the MD-500 at both Zahns & Republic Airports.
This particular helikopter design made by Mcdonnel Douglas, has a hollow tail. Instead of having the Rolls Royce C20-250 turbine driving the main rotor and the tail rotor, via main output, splitting into the main for the main rotor, and one smaller shaft for the tail rotor....the secondary shaft that would drive the tail rotor traditionally, now drives a set of turbines in the tail, which blow a jet of air in the tail where a variable outlet redirects the air so it blows sideways. THERE LOL!
NOTAR was designed because FAA & NTSB determined that 22% of all helicopter crashes were due to tail rotor failure. Quite simply it uses low pressure air flow to a directed variable pitch fan. It is 50% quieter, and is 60% less vulnerable to small arms fire.

During the Vietnam war the Heus 500/ MD 500's were used to patrol along the rivers because of its low noise signature.

CAP used these? I have never heard of them using rotary wing aircraft. I thought they were all fixed wing. if so, you were extremely lucky.

Nice heli! These have no tail rotor???
How is this possible?
Thanks!

Correct - Coanada Effect to provide tail boom lift and anti torque the system is more stable and eiser to control

The shaft is replaced by a variable pitch fan, circulation control tailboom and a driect jet thruster

The unique design was done as part of a competition for a stealth military contract in the 90's
