@Lucyliesinashes : wow just because you think you're so smart doesn't mean you have to bash singers who've worked really hard to get where they are. I bet you worked hard to get your degrees and I'm positive that Chenoweth did too. And on YouTube nontheless? Get a LIFE. I like this video, the cast did a very nice job :)
I absolutely agree. Chenoweth is a fully trained Opera singer, who happened to get a part in a regular play and rocked it. Just because people don't like her ridiculously fantastic high notes doesn't mean she isn't good.
I like your name Lucyliesinashes. It explains where you'll be in a second if you don't stop trash-talking Cheno.
She may not be the BEST opera singer ever, but she is a wonderful Cunegonde, and it is undeniable that she has amazing talent for someone her size. So sit down, shut up, and just enjoy this Candide. You don't need to be a Wicked fan to do that you know. You just need a heart.
Oh my goodness...but she IS one of the best opera singers! She was given a FULL scholarship to Philadelphia's Academy of Vocal Arts, which is only awarded to one student a year out of thousands of applicants. She can hit an F6, and she's been classically trained in opera for her entire academic career. She's a quadruple threat, and FREAKING fantastic in my opinion! :)
@ditto151 That doesn't mean he has to be played over the top. See Kurt Oldman's performance for a more mature portrayal that incorporates it without sacrificing depth for a cheap laugh.
I know nothing about opera? 3 institutions that have granted me advanced degrees, and countless coaches and directors at Met, City Opera, and La Scala would beg to differ. The thing is I DO know about opera, and I don't stand for crap singing to appeal to pop audiences.
ya well she has her masters degree in Opera singing. I can't believe you would insult someone so talented. And I don't believe that thing about the three institutions. Kristin is one of the best opera singers ever to have lived and I can't believe you have insulted someone whos life is so difficult. How would you feel if you were 4'11", you're constantly being asked if you're anorexic cuz you only weigh 97 lbs, you become famous for singing opera and people start insulting you on he computer?

Haha "best opera singers ever to have lived"??? hahahah! June Anderson, Bernstein's cunegonde, is still alive! Do you even know what great singing IS? Tabaldi? Freni? Scotto? Te Kenawa? And as for a hard life, what about Sills, who had a child with down syndrome? Or Voigt who had to have gastric bypass to keep working?
Oh, but they weren't crappy belters who were famous for being skinng and getting a degree just to be more marketable, so they couldn't have had it hard.
she didn't get a degree to be more marketable. It was her lifes dream to move to europe and become an opera singer. she never even thought for one second that she would be in any movies, or act on Broadway. And my point is tht shes not skinny. Shes just born tiny.
You're only proving my point. There is no single 'good technique'. There are many. I'm not attacking your opinion, I'm attacking your judgment. You can think she's not a good singer, and that's your opinion, but you can't just flat-out judge her. That's petty.

I'll bet you're some dumb kid who's obsessed with Wicked... and a big part of the reason real opera is dying- people like Chenowith are marketed as real singers, and idiots like you don't know the difference.
What I like about Chenoweth's Cunegonde is the comic interpretation; if that isn't there, that makes numbers like "Glitter and Be Gay" absolutely painful.
Sounds like snobbery to me. Chenoweth is a good singer. Not the greatest, but good. And opera has been "dying" for over a century, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
And for the record, I hate Wicked with a flaming passion.
But why doesn't Paquette sing at the end (with the others)? I can't hear her part. Maybe I am already going deaf :p

Kristin Chenoweth is the prettiest...no wonder she's Cunegonde :)

Sills had a deaf child and one with autism, not down syndrome.
Which is tragic, one that couldnt hear her talent and one that could never appreciate her talent. :(

They sing 500 times better than I do; I'm not going to criticize them.
I like this interpretation.

Great singing is a perception, not a judgment. To say otherwise is to only prove your narrow-sightedness.

Actually, great singing is a question of good technique and a healthy sound- both objective things that are missing in Kristin's singing.
